Description (EN):

The cross border region and especially the areas of Konitsa and Permet, along with the wider regions of Ioannina and Gjirokaster, share common social and cultural traditions. They are well known through the ages for the craftsmanship of their masons and the exquisite building techniques they used to implement, especially with the stone as the primary building material. The preservation of this significant cultural heritage,as an emblematic characteristic of both countries, is very important for the overall promotion and enhancement of cultural tourism in the wider cross border area. While many actions and projects have been implemented on this field from both sides, there is a need for a combined intervention that would lie on three basic and interactive axes. 1. The acquaintance of the cultural heritage & craftsmanship by developing and using specialized tools, 2. The promotion of significant stone monuments of the CB area by elaborating an immersive approach to the visitors engagement, while creating a clear thematic tourism approach and 3. The preservation of the stone building techniques and methods as a continuous educational asset. In this wider context, and in a time that the lack of specialized masons and building technicians is becoming critical for the preservation and possible rehabilitation of stone monuments and buildings, it is crucial to create a training and educational center in order to maintain this knowledge alive and available as an asset for future generations. To succeed that, we have to ensure that these techniques will be well documented and analyzed in order to be also utilized as best practices for nowadays infrastructure issues and problems. At the same time, this documentation will be the basis for development of digital and publishing content that will promote and enhance the full spectrum of cultural heritage assets of the region and valorize the touristic product of the CB area, creating an area-branded touristic pole.

Expected Results (EN): The successful implementation of STONE.ART will have the following results: 1. Contribution to the development of tourism in the intervention area through the promotion of specific common cultural traditions

Expected Outputs (EN):

STONE.ART expects to achieve the following main outputs: 1. Creation of a CB network of decision makers,users & stakeholders at all levels,with an interest stone craftsmanship & thematic tourism; 2. CB Repository of stone building techniques and methods; 3. Monuments Atlas in printed & digitised format ; 4. Cultural Brand STONE.ART; 5. Research and animation about the Historical Routes of Masons; 6. Study for the adaptation of stone craftsmanship in modern building; 7. 3D models of significant stone constructions of the Intervention area with embedded content; 8. Digital game for adults and children; 9. Internet Platform (Portal and Content Management System (CMS) for integration of project's digital content) that will host all the produced and developed content of the Project available for educational and touristic purposes; 10. A tourist guide application with enriched content about the area’s stone monuments along with useful touristic information; 11. Rehabilitation of Vourbiani Old School in order to host and operate the “School of Stone” along with a detailed study for the foundation of the School. 12. Rehabilitation of a section in Permet Cultural Center that will be a co-operating workshops’ spot for the School of Stone. 13. Establishment of a network of Digital Exhibition Centers (3 permanent and 1 mobile) for the promotion of the Project and its outputs along with future valorization and publicity. 14. Action and sustainability plan for the maximum valorization of the Project. 15. Multilingual booklet production on home building stone techniques; 16. Participation in STONE2020 International Conference The Project clearly contributes to the output indicator CO11 of S.O. 1.2 since a significant increase in the number of visits to the intervention area is expected (2.500 visits) through all of STONE.ART outputs & actions,deriving from the valorisation of the cultural asset for the benefit of thematic tourism.
