The preservation of cultural heritage is a priority challenge for our societies and involves preventive conservation policies to limit the risk of material deterioration. This requires an in-depth knowledge of the degradation mechanisms that enable a diagnosis of the state of conservation of materials. In the complex field of metal alloys, the current method of diagnosis is based on visual observation of the surface of the materials and the experience of experts, as the risk of error of assessment may lead to inappropriate interventions. The objective of the project is to develop a non-invasive, fast, portable and open access diagnostic application for heritage metals (MiCorr+), thus meeting the needs of professionals. Thanks to a cross-border team of conservation-restoration, material sciences and management computer skills, this team will correlate macroscopic observations on cultural goods with a shared database to identify complex corrosion structures at the nanoscale. On this basis, professionals will be able to propose optimised conservation interventions. The scientific, economic and cultural impact will be significant. MiCorr+ will serve local communities and beyond, helping to promote our know-how on the topic.

La préservation du patrimoine culturel constitue un défi prioritaire de nos sociétés et implique des politiques de conservation préventive pour limiter les risques de détérioration des matériaux. Cette démarche requiert une connaissance approfondie des mécanismes de dégradation permettant d’établir un diagnostic de l’état de conservation des matériaux. Dans le domaine complexe des alliages métalliques, la méthode actuelle de diagnostic est basée sur l’observation visuelle de la surface des matériaux et l’expérience des experts, les risques d’erreurs d’appréciation pouvant conduire à des interventions inadaptées. L’objectif du projet est de développer une application d’aide au diagnostic des métaux patrimoniaux (MiCorr+) non invasive, rapide, portable et en accès libre, répondant ainsi aux besoins des professionnels. Grâce à une équipe transfrontalière réunissant des compétences en conservation-restauration, sciences des matériaux et informatique de gestion, celle-ci permettra de corréler les observations macroscopiques réalisées sur les biens culturels avec une base de données mutualisée permettant d’identifier les structures complexes de corrosion à l’échelle nanométrique. Sur cette base, les professionnels pourront proposer des interventions de conservation optimisées. Les retombées seront importantes sur le plan scientifique, économique et culturel. MiCorr+ servira les communautés locales et au-delà, contribuant ainsi à promouvoir notre savoir-faire sur le thème abordé.
