Description (EN): CoExist project aims at strengthening of the cross-border cooperation in environmental conservation biology and coordinating science-based actions on human - freshwater seals coexistence.

Description (FI): CoExist hankkeen tavoitteena on vahvistaa rajat ylittävää yhteistyötä ympäristön suojelubiologiassa ja koordinoida tieteellisistä lähtökohdista ihmisen ja makean veden hylkeen rinnakkaiseloa.

Проект CoExist направлен на укрепление трансграничного сотрудничества в области природоохранной биологии, а также проведение скоординированных, научно обоснованных действий по обеспечению сосуществования человека и пресноводной нерпы.

Achievements (EN):

Main activities and achievements of the project: Novel monitoring tools: Photo-ID: Improved knowledge on Saimaa ringed seal site fidelity and long-term population gained. This enables evidence-based management and decision-making. Pilot season in Lake Ladoga conducted and a first photo-ID database for Ladoga seals created. Novel monitoring tools: Automatic individual identification of seals: A method and software for automatic identification of seal individuals created. Best practices in seal-fisheries conflict mitigation activity: Improved knowledge on seal-fishery conflict in Lake Ladoga and seal-safe fishing methods was gained and distributed among stakeholders. Across the border, promoted dialogue and information sharing were exchanged among fishermen, managing authorities, scientists, enterprises, and conservation experts. Sustainable ecotourism: Enhanced knowledge on effects of seal-watching tourism on Saimaa ringed seal behaviour. Discussion between Saimaa tourist operators started, and their points of view were listed. The information distributed to the authorities. Information shared on seals and cooperation started in Lake Ladoga among tourist sites. Environmental education and awareness: Increased environmental awareness on freshwater seals on both sides of the border. Increased awareness and project visibility among the local public and among school kids and teachers in the project region. Achievements (FI):

Hankkeen päätoiminnot ja saavutukset: Uudet seurantatyökalut: Photo-ID: Saimaannorpan paikkauskollisuutta ja pitkäaikaista populaatiota on parannettu. Tämä mahdollistaa näyttöön perustuvan johtamisen ja päätöksenteon. Pilottikausi Laatokalla suoritettu ja ensimmäinen valokuva-ID-tietokanta laatokannorpista luotiin. Uudet seurantatyökalut: Norppien automaattinen yksilöllinen tunnistaminen: Luotiin norppien automaattisen tunnistamisen menetelmä ja ohjelmisto. Norpansuojelun ja kalastuksen konfliktien lieventämistoimien parhaat käytännöt: Laatokan norpansuojelu-kalastuskonfliktista ja norppaturvallisista kalastusmenetelmistä hankittiin ja jaettiin tietoa sidosryhmien kesken. Lisäksi edistettiin vuoropuhelua ja tiedonvaihtoa kalastajien, hallintoviranomaisten, tutkijoiden, yritysten ja luonnonsuojeluasiantuntijoiden kesken. Kestävä ekomatkailu: Lisätietoa "norppasafarien" vaikutuksista Saimaannorpan käyttäytymiseen. Saimaan matkailualan toimijoiden välinen keskustelu käynnistyi ja heidän näkemyksensä listattiin. Viranomaisille jaettiin tietoa. Tietojen jakaminen norpista ja yhteistyö alkoi Laatokalla matkailukohteiden kesken. Ympäristökasvatus ja -tietoisuus: Lisääntynyt ympäristötietoisuus makean veden hylkeistä rajan molemmin puolin. Lisääntynyt tietoisuus ja hankkeen näkyvyys paikallisen yleisön sekä projektialueen koululaisten ja opettajien keskuudessa. Koulutustyöpaketteja on luotu paljon, ja ne ovat saatavilla hankkeen verkkosivuilla: https://sites.uef.fi/coexist/project-material/.
