The Marless project intends to tackle the problem of Marine Litter in the Adriatic Sea from many fronts in order to obtain visible and concrete results. Numerous in fact are the factors that intervene in the creation of Marine Litter, plastics coming from the inlnads, plastics from the touristic sector or aquaculture. The project then addresses the problem in a holistic way and develops over 6 WPs aimed at attacking the problem on all fronts, and for this reason it fits well into the Strategic framework of this call, because involves all the direct or indirect responsible actors of the Marine Litter, which together can represent the solution to the problem.

Achievements (EN):

MODEL OF DISPERSION OF MARINE LITTER IN THE ADRIATIC SEA: THE EXPERIENCE OF MARLESS: MARLESS project is coming to an end and the deliverables set for the monitoring actions are achieving concrete results. MARLESS’ monitoring action aims at tracking marine litter dispersed in the Adriatic Sea, through remote information, satellite images, and numerical models to generate harmonisation and an expansion of the national monitoring programme for the Adriatic Sea along with elaborating innovative maps of probability of accumulation and marine litter trajectories. The numerical model for marine litter dispersion has been recently finalised by the partners of Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and ARPA FVG. The following article will showcase the process of the development and implementation of the MARLESS numerical model. The MARLESS project (MARine Litter cross-border awareness and innovation actions) implements concrete and joint interventions aimed at solving the problem of marine litter in the Adriatic Sea from different points of view and intervention methods. The project implemented various actions of monitoring, management, prevention and removal of marine debris. Also, an awareness-raising campaign and training activities addressed to different actors (schools, hoteliers, citizens, etc.) were carried out, and a number of experimental pilot projects aimed at finding effective solutions for the removal and treatment of marine waste were carried out.

Expected Results (EN):

The project wants to achieve the following results: 1)Marine Litter Assessment: comparison of the methods used for the monitoring carried out within the Marine Strategy by the Italian and Croatian partners, implementation of thse methods and development of mathematical model and use of satelite images for the identification of waste within the Adriatic Sea(WP3); 2)Marine Litter awareness: promotion of awareness-raising campaigns and training actions addressed to different actors (schools and hoteliers) and aimed at actively involving citizens also in a recirpoco comparison and with the institutions (Costa contract - specific action in collaboration with the Conference of Major of Veneto Region)(WP4); 3) Marine Litter capture: comparison on the obstacles to the implementation of effective removal and treatment of Marine Litter deriving from the implementation of European and national laws and regulations(WP5); 4) Marine litter treatment and removal: experimentation of a series of pilot actions aimed at identifying effective solutions for the removal and treatment of marine Litter (plastic collection in Ports, plastic treatment in Pyrolytic small plants, River Barriers for plastic collection, Beached plastic collection , Mussels for microplastic removal, drone technologies for plastic collection, innovative materials in the aquaculture industry)(WP6)

Expected Outputs (EN):

The creation of coast and river agreements among inland and coastal regions as well the development of unified cross-border marine litter monitoring methodologies and management plans represent innovative approaches in international cooperation among countries in marine litter management which will last even after the project end. Lastly, research results based on pilot implementation of innovative blue technologies will be used for the scale up of future projects and interventions.
