Description (EN): The project aims to contribute to the improvement of environmental quality and reducing river littering in rural areas by supporting the introduction of the modern practice of waste management and environmental awareness raising through cross-boundary cooperation and cross-sectoral partnership in Georgia, Armenia, Moldova and Romania. The project puts a special focus on anti-littering capacity building of rural areas.
The project will facilitate the introduction of best practices of waste management based on the EU approaches in selected rural areas of Georgia, Armenia and Moldova. In particular, plastic and paper separation will be introduced and relevant experience will be created; separation/recycling will be introduced in tourist destinations located in rural areas; with the participation of stakeholders, there will be created the Municipal Waste Management Plans for the selected rural municipalities in Armenia, as well the Local Environmental Action Plans for the selected municipalities in Georgia; the capacities of the rural communities for the realization of 3R principle of waste will be increased, which will significantly reduce the anthropogenic impact on rivers, especially on small rivers.
One of the main goals of the project is to raise the level of public awareness and education regarding river and marine litter problems, the importance of environmental protection, modern waste management practice. To that end, there will be used such tools as the implementation of anti-littering educational programs and information campaigns, information dissemination through mass media and electronic media, direct involvement and participation of citizens in environmental and Clean Up events. Different publications about river litter, waste management will be made for target groups.
The project will facilitate cross-boundary cooperation in the BSB. In particular, there will be established the cross-border network with the participation of countries involved in the project, the memorandums of cross-sectoral partnership will be signed. Sister Cities Agreements between municipality involved in the project will be signed.
A special focus will be put on the replication and capitalization of project results and achievements, for which the publications, meetings and electronic media will be used.
Representatives of 7 target groups involved in the project will improve their knowledge and skills for anti-littering activities and environmental protection. Considerable attention will be devoted to anti-littering public awareness raise measures among young people.
The project will involve 5 partners: Tskaltubo Municipality, as Lead Partner and Project Partners: Ungheni City Hall, REC Caucasus Armenia, Tehnopol Galati Association, Imereti Scientists’ Union “Spectri”. It should be noted that three partners have the partnership experience on the implementation of joint projects within the BSB Programs.

1. The Guideline on the EU experience and best practice of waste separation/recycling in rural areas
The content of the guide: waste recycling in EU countries; rural waste management: deficiencies and causes, solutions and overtures, recycling models in EU, model for the implementation of rural recycling programmes, involvement of the population in the waste management in the rural areas.
2. The assessment of waste recycling capacity and recommendations on introducing the 3R principle in the selected rural communities of Armenia
The material contains information about General information about the Republic of Armenia; the situation regarding the waste management system in Armenia; Recommendations for Improving solid waste management in Armenia; Recommendations for local communities. The assessment was submitted to the Armenian partner and shared with Dilijan and Vanadzor municipalities.
3. The establishment of collection points for plastic and aluminium packages in tourist and recreation zones in selected rural areas of Georgia
The collection points for the plastic and aluminium selected collection were organised in tourist and recreation rural zones in Tskaltubo municipality. A total of ten containers were placed in these areas.
4. The establishment and implementation of the Consultation and Education Point on Recycling in Ungheni (Moldova)
After the creation of the Recycling Consultation and Education Point, 5 Training sessions for target groups on recycling / selective collection was carried out.
5. Anti-littering education program regarding river and marine litter problems and 3R principle of waste management for target groups in Georgia, Armenia, Moldova and Romania
Anti-litter educational program for pilot schools on the river and marine litter problems and modern waste management was implemented, and the curriculum of the Anti-litter educational program was prepared.
6. The Upcycling Academy (Summer Green Camps) for youth in Georgia and Moldova.
The camps were aimed to raise students' awareness of environmental protection and waste management and included a variety of educational and, at the same time, fun activities. The campers were actively involved in many interesting events. Considerable time was devoted to the sessions on making useful items from waste. Many useful items were created from various waste materials by the students.

Expected Results (EN): R 2.2 Level of awareness of environmental challenges and good waste management practices related to river and marine litter
Expected Outputs (EN): 1.Increased capacity of the selected rural communities of Georgia, Armenia and Moldova by sharing and introducing the European approaches and experience of the 3R principle of waste management.
2. Developed of transboundary cooperation and cross-sectoral partnership for anti-littering protection, public awareness raising and environmental education in rural areas of Georgia, Armenia, Moldova and Romania.
The expected results of project contribution to the program are as follows:
- Introduction of plastic and paper separation in the selected rural communities of Georgia, Armenia and Moldova.
- Implementation of training and educational programs regarding rivers and sea protection and waste management 3Rs principles for target groups, information campaigns, organizing Clean-up and Environmental events in Georgia, Armenia, Moldova and Romania.
- Development of international and national capacity and partnership between the local authorities, NGOs, private sector and other stakeholders for river and sea protection, and introducing the practice of the 3R of waste management in Georgia, Armenia, Moldova and Romania.
Contribution to the program result indicator:
- More than 4000 representatives of 7 target groups will be involved in the project environmental actions and awareness raising activities,
- 5 municipalities, 16 rural communities, 20 NGOs, 40 pilot schools, 3 universities, 20 mass media groups, 25 SMEs and 25 farms will use program support for developing and improving the capacity on modern waste management and anti-littering knowledge and skills in BSB counties.
