It is recognized that the tourism sector in the project area has a very positive impact on employment and income, as it is one of the fastest-growing sectors with high growth potential. However, nowadays, due to the strong international competition, the natural beauty of the landscape, the monuments and/or other sights are not enough for a destination to be characterised as attractive, diversified and competitive. Among other important features of the tourism product, a dominant role is played by the enterprises operating in the field and their capacity to offer services of high quality which satisfy the customers and ensure sustainability of the industry. As the tourism market is growing, it is getting more and more demanding for the enterprises to combine better services with competitive prices. Otherwise, the customers are reoriented to big resorts or, at worst, to different destinations. In any case, this fact, combined with the financial crisis, is a real long-term threat for the viability of the vast majority of tourism MSMEs. Through the project "EXCELTOUR", the 6 partners from 5 countries aim at tackling this challenge by introducing & applying the concept of Business Excellence in tourism SMEs using the internationally recognized Excellence Model of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) targeting mainly to ensure SUSTAINABILITY of tourism. The sequence of activities towards this objective is: Creation of a group of skilled consultants/ facilitators, able to support SMEs towards the implementation of the EFQM Model and their certification as Committed to Excellence (training package, joint facilitators' training programme) => Creation of a transnational facilitators registry => SMEs preparation for certification => SMEs assessment and certification=> Experience exchange (study visits) => Networking. This sequence is accompanied by project's management and coordination as well as communication activities. The project and especially its transnational character adds value offering important benefits to its target groups and ensuring sustainability and is expected to have springboard and multiplier effect: - The SMEs that will apply the EFQM Model will act as role models in their areas & abroad. - The EXCELTOUR Network that will be created, assures the sustainability & transferability of the outputs & results in a wider geographical area and after the project. - Apart of the transnational experience exchange, the study visits will create transnational business links between visitors and hosts and those links can be developed into further cooperation. - The wide dissemination of the results will familiarize the tourism stakeholders with Business Excellence concept and will motivate them to act accordingly. From these points of view, it is clear that this project is a significantly efficient investment in the project area.

Expected Results (EN): R 1.1 Strength of cross-border business opportunities in the tourism and cultural sectors

Expected Outputs (EN):

R1) DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMON FACILITATORS’ TRAINING PACKAGE (A.T.1.1) for SMEs facilitators in applying the EFQM Excellence Model (derived from O.T.1.1 - SO1). R2) CREATION OF A TRANSNATIONAL FACILITATORS’ REGISTRY (A.T.1.2) including 24 trained facilitators able to support the tourism SMEs towards the use of the EFQM Excellence Model, the implementation of the 3 improvement actions per SME (according to the model) and their recognition for committment to excellence (derived from O.T.1.2 - SO1). R3) 60 SMEs USED THE EFQM MODEL AND RECOGNIZED AS COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE (A.T.2.1, A.T.2.2) and implemented 3 actions improving their performance and competitiveness. Those SMEs will act as role models in their regions (multipliers) (derived from O.T.1.3 - SO2). R4) TRANSNATIONAL EXCHANGE OF KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCES AND BEST PRACTICES (A.T.2.3) in study visits and the EXCELTOUR Network (derived from O.T.2.1 - SO2). R5) NETWORKING (A.T.2.4). The parties involved in the project (partners, facilitators, tourism stakeholders & SMEs) will be asked to participate in the EXCELTOUR network that will be created to ensure sustainability, transferability and springboard and multiplier effect (derived from O.T.2.2 - SO3). Coherence with Specific Objectives (SO). SO1: Training of experts - Creation of a facilitators' registry: R1 & R2. SO2: SMEs using EFQM Business Excellence model and recognized: R3. SO3: Creation of the EXCELTOUR network: R4 and R5. It is obvious that all the results contribute in the programme expected result R.1.1: Stronger cross-border business opportunities IN THE TOURISM & cultural sectors in BSB and to the relevant indicator RI.1.1. Business support organisations benefit from results R1, R2, R4 and R5. The general public benefits from results R3 and R5. Others (individual professionals facilitatiors-to-be) benefit from results R1 and R2. SMEs benefit from all the results. Where applicable, the results will be freely available in the project (transferability).
