Read more Achievements (EN): From October 2016, five cultural institutions from Germany, Belgium and France joined together to establish a network of cultural and social actors; they are committed to the fight against discrimination of all kinds. This first cooperation was considered to be Kick-off of the cross-border Bérénice project, which lasted more than four years of theatre, dance, Music, performances and social inclusion combined.
The Bérénice-Factory. A platform for exile artists:
The Bérénice network offered accompanying measures to foreign artists in exile (asylum applicants, refugees, immigrants without residence permits, etc.) who want to (re)entry into professional life in the Greater Region.
The partners of the Bérénice network are understood as points of contact as well as as resource, consulting and mediation centres that network the artists with other cultural actors. Some artistic projects were also financially supported in their implementation. In total, 28 artists were contacted or supported in this context.
The Bérénice-Caravane. A co-produced guest performance tour:
In 2017, three artistic projects in the Greater Region dealing with the issues of exile and discrimination were selected and co-produced by the Bérénice network. In 2019, all the pieces went on tour and were performed in the four cities (Eupen, Liège, Metz, Trier) in a mini-festival of the Bérénice Caravane: the Bérénice-Caravane.
The Bérénice Academy. Who needs to be educated:
The accompanying programme — Bérénice-Factory for refugees and the organisation of artistic workshops with refugees within the framework of the Bérénice label raised many methodological, ethical, legal, artistic and sociological questions.
In the first years of the project, these questions were addressed during partner meetings and deepened in two cross-border colloquia in Trier (April 2018) and Metz (September 2019). This allowed artists and social workers to meet their needs for an exchange of experience and competence. They also needed mutual training to better capture and reflect on the different actions they offer to different target groups.
In order to respond to this problem and to give the various partners the opportunity to work on long-term social inclusion projects through art, training seminars were offered in Metz and Eupen during the course of 2021.
The training workshops designed as a toolbox presented so-called “inclusive” art practices that enable the development of a group in all its diversity (language, age, mobility...).

The Bérénice label. Including performances and workshops:
The Bérénice label was introduced by the artistic directors of the participating institutions to make the concrete impact on the schedule of the participants visible, to show that on stage, including topics, and to reach a mixed audience.
A piece marked with the label questions and reclassifies the terms “identities” and “borders”. Artists who are rarely seen in theatres due to physical circumstances, for example due to disability, geographical distance or unstable or complicated political situation in their homeland, have been given the opportunity to perform. At the same time — before or after the performance — there was an accompanying program to do a specific placement work. A total of 200 pieces were presented as part of the Bérénice label by all partners of the network in Metz, Trier, Eupen and Liège.

Diese erste Kooperation galt als Auftakt zum grenzüberschreitenden Bérénice-Projekt, das mehr als vier Jahre lang Theater, Tanz, Musik, Performances und soziale Inklusion miteinander verband.
Die Bérénice-Factory. Eine plattform für exilkünstler/-innen:
Das Bérénice-Netzwerk bot ausländischen Künstlern/-innen im Exil (Asylbewerber/-innen, Flüchtlinge, Einwanderer/-innen ohne Aufenthaltsgenehmigungen usw.), die in der Großregion (wieder) ins Berufsleben einsteigen wollen, Begleitmaßnahmen an.
Die Partner des Bérénice-Netzwerks werden als Anlaufstellen sowie als Ressourcen-, Beratungs- und Vermittlungszentren verstanden, die die Künstler/-innen mit weiteren kulturellen Akteur/-innen vernetzten. Einige künstlerische Projekte wurden bei ihrer Umsetzung ebenfalls finanziell unterstützt. Insgesamt wurde in diesem Rahmen mit 28 Künstler/-innen Kontakt aufgenommen bzw. wurden unterstützt.
Die Bérénice-Caravane. Eine koproduzierte gastspieltournee:
2017 wurden drei künstlerische Projekte der Großregion, die sich mit den Themen des Exils und der Diskriminierung auseinandersetzen, ausgewählt und vom Bérénice-Netzwerk koproduziert. 2019 gingen alle Stücke auf Tournee und wurden in den vier Städten (Eupen, Lüttich, Metz, Trier) in einem Mini-Festival der Bérénice Caravane aufgeführt: die Bérénice-Caravane.
Die Bérénice-Akademie. Der Bedarf, sich fortzubilden:
Mit dem Begleitprogramm – Bérénice-Factory für geflüchtete Künstler/-innen und der Durchführung von künstlerischen Workshops mit Flüchtlingen im Rahmen des Bérénice-Labels wurden viele methodische, ethische, juristische, künstlerische und soziologische Fragen aufgeworfen.
In den ersten Jahren des Projekts wurden diese Fragen während Partnertreffen thematisiert und im Rahmen von zwei grenzüberschreitenden Kolloquien in Trier (April 2018) und in Metz (September 2019) vertieft. Dies erlaubte den Künstlern/-innen sowie den Sozialarbeitern/-innen, ihren Bedarf an einem Erfahrungs- und Kompetenz-Austausch nachzukommen. Sie brauchten ebenfalls eine gegenseitige Fortbildung, um die verschiedenen Aktionen, die sie unterschiedlichen Adressatengruppen anbieten, besser erfassen und reflektieren zu können.
Um auf diese Problematik zu reagieren und den verschiedenen Partnern die Möglichkeit zu geben, an langfristig angelegten Projekten zur sozialen Inklusion durch Kunst zu arbeiten, wurden im Laufe des Jahres 2021 in Metz und Eupen Fortbildungsseminare angeboten.
Die als Werkzeugkasten konzipierten Schulungsworkshops stellten sogenannte “inklusive” Kunstpraktiken vor, die die Entfaltung einer Gruppe in all ihrer Vielfalt (Sprache, Alter, Mobilität…) ermöglichen.

Das Bérénice-Label. Inklusive aufführungen und workshops:
Das Bérénice-Label wurde von den künstlerischen Leitungen der beteiligten Einrichtungen eingeführt, um die konkrete Auswirkung auf den Spielplan der Teilnehmer sichtbar zu machen, um zu zeigen, dass sich auf der Bühne inklusive Themen wiederfinden und um ein gemischtes Publikum damit zu erreichen.
Ein mit dem Label gekennzeichnetes Stück hinterfragt und ordnet die Begriffe „Identitäten“ und „Grenzen“ neu. Künstlern/-innen, die auf Grund physischer Umstände selten in den Theatern zu sehen sind, zum Beispiel auf Grund von Behinderung, der geografischen Entfernung oder instabilen oder komplizierten politischen Situation in ihrer Heimat, wurde die Möglichkeit der Aufführung gegeben. Parallel – vor oder nach der Aufführung – gab es ein Begleitprogramm, um eine spezifische Vermittlungsarbeit zu leisten. Insgesamt wurden 200 Stücke im Rahmen des Bérénice-Labels von allen Partnern des Netzwerks in Metz, Trier, Eupen und Lüttich präsentiert.
