Export of Russian reindeer meat overseas is still relatively small. The Russian reindeer slaughterhouses should improve their operational processes, quality control and marketing and export expertise. In Finland on the other hand, the exporting of reindeer meat overseas is restricted by the sufficiency of reindeer meat, but for instance, there is expertise in exporting reindeer products. The objective of the Reindeer Meat – Quality High Project is to combine the strengths and expertise of Russia and Finland, thereby enhancing the economic feasibility of everybody in the reindeer meat production chain; reindeer owners, reindeer slaughterhouses, meat production enterprises and sales companies. The target groups of the project are reindeer slaughterhouses that are located in the areas: Russian Arkhangelsk Region, Russian Murmansk Region, Russian Nenets Autonomous District, the Russian Republic of Komi, and reindeer production enterprises in Lapland.

Achievements (EN):

The project investigated the factors that are critical for the international sale of reindeer meat outside Barents region. The project combined the strengths and know-how of Russia and Finland, which could be used to improve the economic profitability of all actors in the chain of the reindeer industry. However, this result could not be realized in the project after 28 February 2022 due to Russia's attack on Ukraine. In the project, instructional materials for meat production have been made for the Russian partners, the use of which has been instructed in meetings in Russia and Finland. The instructional material focuses on general methods of operation, questions related to cutting reindeer meat, and questions related to hygiene in reindeer meat production. Two videos have been made in the project, which focus on how the brand and experience of reindeer meat can be put to good use, especially in marketing aimed at restaurants in each region and when introducing the use of reindeer meat to potential international customers. The project created connections in Finland with ministries, public organizations and development organizations such as the Food Agency and Business Finland's national and international network, as well as Lapland's ELY center. In these contexts, the goals and development needs of the reindeer industry were presented, and tools and resources were sought for future development work.

Expected Results (EN): The aim is for the Russian slaughterhouses to apply for and become incorporated in the European TRACES system (TRAde Control and Expert System), in order for them to be able to export their products to the EU region.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The outputs of the project are guidelines (manuals and videos) for Russian reindeer slaughterhouses. These guidelines are examined in a practical manner at each reindeer slaughterhouse. The goal is for these guidelines to be taken on as permanent practice in activities. Seminars will be arranged for the Russian groups in Finland, as well as company visits at facilities and companies in the sector. A number of Russian groups will visit Finland during the course of the project. During the visit, reindeer meat production processes in Finland will be demonstrated to them by practical means. On the basis of the information received during the project and the analyses conducted, a report will be complied on the possibilities for the international sales of reindeer meat, including recommendations for future measures.
