Description (EN):

ARCTAQUA project will contribute to an expansion of an economic, ethical and environmentally sustainable aquaculture industry in the Arctic region. The project will focus on 4 species (Arctic char, spotted wolffish, European whitefish and nelma). These species were selected for their potential for farming in the Arctic region and high economical value, however they all present bottlenecks in their production that the ARCTAQUA will address through innovative approaches and cross-border knowledge exchange. The strength of ARCTAQUA lies in the gathered, complementary scientific expertise within the consortium and the close collaboration with SMEs from Russia, Sweden, Finland and Norway, creating a transdisciplinary approach. ARCTAQUA will address common challenges, promote innovations, attract potential investors and share state of the art knowledge. Proof of concepts for industrial development of the aquaculture sector will be disseminated to end- and lead users through outreach activities such as open workshops targeting stakeholders from farming, retailing and other industry as well as regional authorities and decision makers.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Outputs are e.g. research on the genetics of the selected species, and selective breeding; guidelines for handling and storage of gametes; knowledge, guidelines and guidebooks for breeding and feeding the species, guidelines for prevention of diseases. Outputs related to dissemination: activities to promote the ARCTAQUA and new fish species farming in the Arctic region, and interaction with acuaculture industry and stakeholders.
