Description (EN):

The Mediterranean area faces, on the one hand, a significant waste production and landfilling, and on the other hand, the production of huge quantities of reusable goods prematurely disposed for recycling, consequently maintaining the old linear economy of “produce, use and throw away”. With the aim to promote the culture of reuse for environmental sustainability, green employment and solidarity, REUSEMED proposes to create municipal networks based on reuse circuits for home appliances, furniture, books, clothes, Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment and food. To set up the networks, 4 cities in Spain, Italy, Jordan and Tunisia will design and test composting installations, food collection points in markets, repair and reuse centers, reuse corners in shops and repairing cafés. Moreover, an APP solution will interconnect managers and users of the different circuits. Even if promoted by the local administrations in charge of waste management counting with the involvement of local stakeholder organizations, it is expected that the reuse networks will become self-sustainable in the mid-term, when revenues out of the sales of repaired products can finance the human resources and the maintenance of the infrastructures.

Achievements (EN):

REUSEMED project's sustainable legacy: lasting contributions in four Mediterranean countries: Over a period of more than two years, the distinguished REUSEMED Project partners in Deir Allaa (Jordan), Capannori (Italy), Sakiet Ezzit (Tunisia) and Cordoba (Spain) have been diligent and dedicated in promoting the culture of reuse. And although the project has already reached its conclusion, its impact transcends time, manifesting itself in projects and initiatives that persist in operation in these diverse communities. From July 1, 2020 to August 2023, the REUSEMED Project has made a significant mark in promoting environmental sustainability and efficient municipal waste management in the Mediterranean basin. Despite the official completion of the project, various initiatives, such as repair and reuse centers, food collection points and municipal networks, continue to operate actively, contributing to the establishment of an enduring reuse culture. The future looks bright, with these initiatives demonstrating that reuse is not only an effective response to environmental challenges, but also a viable model for building more sustainable and caring communities in the time to come.

4 maps of resources for reuse identifying the existing secondhand resources. 32 reuse circuits developed, 8 per partner city, covering the different fractions of waste. 13 food collection points in markets. 13 repair and reuse centers installed in existing warehouses. 31 reuse corners in shops for exhibition of reusable products. 18 repairing cafés. 1 APP solution connecting users and managers of the reuse networks. 4 enhanced integrated solid waste management plans.
