The project develops biorefinery solutions for existing and new industries within the programme area and uses residues from forest industries, forestry and by-products to develop new products, chemicals and materials. Results: The project has worked to develop new industries that produce products and materials from forest raw materials, and provided the conditions for strengthening companies in the toughening competition by making more and more profitable products with the same amount of wood raw material used today. The project has worked to develop biorefinery or biorefinery solutions for existing and new industries. Of the eight product or process prototypes that the project has demonstrated during the project, three are expected to be fully commercialised within a 5-year period. There are prerequisites that two full-scale industrial plants and two new value chains will be able to be fully established and operational within a 10-year period. The long-term impact is that by 2020, at least two of the paper and pulp mills or the chemical industry in the region will use more of the forest raw material and have at least two competitive products for sale. A result that was not expected was the development of tannins foam that can have many uses and the results of the graphing that was so successful that several large companies joined a continuation project.

Projektet utvecklar bioraffinerilösningar för befintliga och nya industrier inom programområdet och nyttjar restprodukter från skogsindustrier, skogsbruk och biprodukter för att ta fram nya produkter, kemikalier och material. Resultat: Projektet har jobbat för att nya industrier som producerar produkter och material från skogsråvara ska växa fram, samt gett förutsättningar för att stärka företag i den hårdnande konkurrensen genom att göra fler och mer lönsamma produkter med samma mängd vedråvara som används idag. Projektet har arbetat för att utveckla bioraffinaderier eller bioraffinaderilösningar för befintliga och nya industrier. Av de åtta produkt- eller processprototyper som projektet har demonstrerat under projekttiden bedöms tre kunna kommersialiseras fullt ut inom en 5-årsperiod. Det finns förutsättningar att två fullskaliga industriella anläggningar och två nya värdekedjor ska kunna vara fullt ut etablerade och i drift inom en 10-årsperiod. De långsiktiga effekterna är att år 2020 ska minst två av pappers- och massabruken eller den kemiska industrin i regionen ta tillvara mer av skogsråvaran och ha minst två konkurrenskraftiga produkter till försäljning. Ett resultat som inte var förväntat var framtagningen av tanninskum som kan ha många användningsområden samt resultaten av graftingen som blev så lyckat att flera stora företag gick med i ett fortsättningsprojekt.
