UNESCO Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Mura Drava Danube (TBR MDD) is connecting 12 protected areas and uniting 5 countries along 3 rivers into first world pentalateral biosphere reserve. The area known as Amazon of Europe (AoE) represents the largest and most preserved free-flowing river system in Central Europe. Pristine natural beauty, endangered habitats and diverse cultural traditions have enormous potential for sustainable tourism, while underdeveloped border regions face lack of capacities, unemployment and emigration. DTP project AoE Bike Trail is the first development project in TBR MDD, connecting key stakeholders into one linear biking product. The results (network, booking system, valorisation programme) will be substantially upgraded with this project into truly responsible destination AoE, by developing much-needed joint strategies, IT solutions and learning interactions at significantly broader destination level. Project aim is to enhance sustainable economic growth and tourism development based on distinctive natural and cultural heritage, which will result in collaboration network of key actors and enabling environment for high-quality tourism, responding to limited resources of ecosystems. AoE destination will be a joint and integrated solution for sustainable tourism, including: - Green Destination Tourism Impact Model, combining social and technological innovation; - joint strategy and management model for the destination, - joint flagship tourism products connecting top experiences along the rivers: River Trail, Hiking Trails, AoE Experiences, - model validation in 2 transnational pilot areas and training stakeholders for responsible green destination. Amazing AoE will bring sustainable development opportunities for managing diversity of natural and cultural heritage and resources in AoE from local to transnational level, while enabling unique experiences for international visitors.

Achievements (EN):

Joint Strategy for the Amazon of Europe Destination Development: Amazon of Europe destination, spanning across the first world UNESCO 5-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube (TBR MDD), is unique in global terms. The present strategy has been developed based on wide engagement of stakeholders while developing this 5-country destination. Our joint aim is to enable truly sustainable development with positive impact on the locals, the nature in the region and the visitors. We are aware of many challenges on this path, as well as that it is a very long-term oriented goal. Tourism trends show that this is the right way forward. Thus, we have set the following long term strategic goals: 1. Amazon of Europe Destination Development Organisation (DMO) is fully established and functional. 2. 8 Joint AoE Flagship Products (FSPs) are fully operational and profitable. 3. The infrastructure of all 8 FSPs is established and regularly monitored and improved. 4. AoE Collective brand and quality system is operational. 5. AoE Academy is functioning and is regularly improved. 6. AoE Business Hub is functioning and is regularly improved. 7. All stakeholders in the region know the Amazon of Europe story, identify themselves with it and are able to present it in a comprehensive way. 8. The Amazon of Europe story and destination is a brand that is recognized across the globe. 9. The public transportation networks enable the AoE visitors and residents to arrive and travel within the destination with ease. 10. A reliable, green AoE mobility network is fully functional and regularly monitored and improved. 11. A fixed compensation valorisation system – Give back to nature is operational. 12. A green behaviour valorisation programme is operational. 13. Climate neutrality of the AoE destination (all involved stakeholders) is achieved. With strong cooperation and active engagement of key stakeholders from both private and public sector, we are convinced it is possible to achieve the set goals and realize the UNESCO MAB objective: good for nature, good for the people.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to strengthen sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and resources (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

Project main result is established functional collaboration network of key stakeholders of the Green Destination Amazon of Europe, leading to the achievement of enhanced local economic growth and tourism development. Consisting of key actors from 12 regions and 5 countries, the network will connect high-skilled individuals and capable organisations, forming enhanced enabling environment of a functioning transboundary destination Amazon of Europe, for implementing the joint strategy, offering high-quality services to international visitors, and high added-value green jobs to the inhabitants in the degraded, mostly rural areas. By validating a model of a transnational green destination, we will build on existing network of protected areas (coop MDD project) and limited network of development actors in biking tourism (AoE Bike Trail project). Thus, we will broaden and strongly intensify the cooperation between at least 300 key organisations for tourism development, including regional and local public authorities, tourism boards, NGOs and service providers (mostly SMEs: accommodations, restaurants, guides, tour operators etc). The cooperation will be intensified in over a year-long participation process with over 40 workshops and trainings, where we will develop a joint strategy, while also enhancing the knowledge of public and private organisations for responsible tourism. Project result directly corresponds to the programme result by intensifying long-term cooperation of key actors along Mura, Drava and Danube, in order to strengthen sustainable and responsible use of natural and cultural resources by inhabitants and visitors of the area. Joint sustainability plan will also result in future opportunities for further cooperation in research on environment and economic development, as well as in further business and investment opportunities. Close connections are in place with high-level policy actors from all countries, and UNESCO.
