Description
Description (EN): Cycling infrastructure in Danube region is largely in an early stage of development, especially outside of the major urban areas. Given the benefits that cycling has on environment, transport multimodality, tourism, health etc. this fact is both a development opportunity and a substantial safety risk if not properly addressed. Shocking facts are coming even from developed countries (i.e. NL) where in 2017 more people were killed and seriously injured on bicycles than in cars. Improvement of data on cyclist-related fatal and serious injuries makes this problem apparent everywhere, especially where cycling provision don’t exist or are poor, like in Danube region. The aim of this project is to tackle cycling infrastructure safety issues on existing, planned and missing cycling corridors crossing the Danube region by increasing awareness about cycling infrastructure safety, facilitating transfer of best practices and transnational cooperation through learning activities. The project contributes to the SO3.1 of the DTP in line with the restrictions with topic on cycling routes in Danube area. The project maps infrastructure risks on existing Danube region EuroVelo routes and provides a strategic decision-making toolkit that will increase stakeholders’ capacity, build knowledge and cooperation at different levels, thus preventing development of killer cycling infrastructure an early stage. Best practices in the factsheet form will be collected offering recommendations that will support decision-making process in building new and improving existing routes. The project will display its potentials in 3 pilots, one in each participating country. SABRINA covers routes crossing 12 countries in the Danube Region and involves 12 PP from 10 countries. Besides comprehensive Risk Mapping on cycle routes, SABRINA will integrate two existing assessment methodologies (EuroVelo ECS and EuroRAP) and deliver integrated bicycle infrastructure risk assessment methodology for future use.

Safe Cycling Routes Toolkit (SCRT), one of the Sabrina Project results, is a modular interactive online decision-making support tool which guides users through the process of defining new cycling routes as well as improvements of existing ones, with respect to cycling safety. SCRT is based on three road safety and cycling route assessment methodologies (iRAP, CycleRAP and ECS), as well as available research on the impact of infrastructure on cyclist’s safety.
The assessment modules provided by the tool are NOT a replacement for any of methodologies utilised within the SCRT! Rather, modules are intended to be used as a way to estimate safety results and a price for a given cycling route infrastructure layout without much previous knowledge of aforementioned cycling route assessment methodologies. All background images and vector resources were taken from https://www.freepik.com/ and https:/, and belong to their respective authors.

BEST PRACTICES IN CYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE REPORT:
Finally, the Sabrina Best Practices in Cycling Infrastructure Report is here. Strategies, Planning, Implementation, Maintenance and Assessment
In this report, several cycling safety issues identified in the SABRINA project are described (chapter 2). State-of-the art and evidence-based best practice knowledge on the essential ingredients of safe cycling infrastructure are described in chapter 3, together with practical recommendations for implementation.
The content was collected and collated by all SABRINA partners and comprises evidence from practitioners in the Danube region and beyond, as well as from scientific literature and previous EU research projects (INTER-REG and Horizon programs).
The report facilitates learning from each other by addressing three different levels:
1. Cycling development and improvement strategies & policies are presented on national, regional and
local level from, but not limited to, countries within the geographic scope of this project.
2. The chapter on planning principles of safe (cycling) infrastructure focuses on regional and local bicycle networks and their planning guide lines and issues.
3. Examples for safe cycling infrastructure are shown.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to strengthen environmentally-friendly, safe and balanced transport systems (survey based composite indicator)
Expected Outputs (EN): The project's expected result is the IMPROVED COOPERATION OF KEY ACTORS IN THE PROGRAMME AREA, RESULTING IN AN INCREASE OF BICYCLE INFRASTRUCTURE SAFETY ON ALL EXISTING AND PLANED EUROVELO ROUTES IN THE DANUBE REGION. The project result will moreover contribute to the selected DTP result indicator as it will create the conditions for safer active mobility opportunities and consequently a switch to environmental-friendly, bicycle modes of transport.
By building of user-friendly common knowledge and data sharing point SABRINA benefits all countries in the Danube region that will build on expertise and best practice developed in SABRINA. The Star Rating of bicycle routes for safety will allow the so much needed awareness-raising on role that infrastructure plays in bicycle safety and how it can be improved. This, complemented with higher knowledge and the common use of best practice methodologies and tools in the different countries, will result in reduced deaths and serious injuries for cyclists in Danube area and reverse potential trends of increasing road trauma that involve bicyclists. It will also enable building missing links based on informed decisions that take infrastructure safety and best practices into account. The increased capacity of decision-makers and other stakeholders in applying specific methodology to inspect existing and plan new cyclist infrastructure will result in decreased crashes and severity of crashes with improvements to road layout, better provision of safe cycling facilities including improvement of condition on cycling lanes.
