The Danube region is rich in cultural and natural heritage. Whereas there are already many initiatives dealing with conservation and research, the project recognises sustainable tourism as another important option to use and preserve this heritage. European Cultural Routes and the other networks represented in this project set first steps to valorise these assets in that direction. Recognizing the vast cultural and natural heritage, the project Transdanube Travel Stories aims at supporting sustainable tourism in the Danube region by implementing innovative promotion concepts (new narratives) and sustainable mobility management tools. (1) The development of new narratives is the strategy to promote the Danube macro-region as touristic area. Single sites do not attract tourists, but linking selected sites to a story (along a trail) that can be experienced will create interest and lead to a Danube memory. (2) The integration of mobility management instruments (mobility managers, mobility centres, mobility plans) in institutional structures at route and destination level will make it easier for tourists to experience the new narratives by using environmentally-friendly means of transport and therefore limit the negative, transport related consequences of raising tourist numbers. (3) The establishment of tourism product clubs at destination level and improved thematic and institutional linkages between the European Cultural Routes and other networks will strengthen the cooperation between the key actors and will increase their capacities to promote sustainable tourism in the Danube region. New narratives and mobility management together with advanced institutional capacities will provide the framework to better position the Danube as a unique sustainable tourism destination on the market resulting in more European citizens experiencing European cultural and natural heritage in a sustainable way.

UNVEILING THE TRANSDANUBE TRAVEL STORIES PROJECT WITH SERBIAN PROJECT PARTNER: The Danube region has an abundance of cultural and natural wonders. Recognizing the need for innovative approaches to utilize this rich heritage, a new transnational initiative has emerged - the Transdanube Travel Stories project. This collaborative initiative seeks to redefine the narrative of the Danube region by merging new narratives and innovative mobility management. The ultimate aim? To firmly establish the Danube as a standout sustainable tourism destination in the European market. In this interview, we will gain insights from our Serbian partner, Danube Comptence Centre, exploring their perspectives on this remarkable journey. 1. HOW HAVE THE PROJECT RESULTS BEEN USED? The Transdanube Travel Stories project aimed at transforming the Danube macro-region into an attractive tourist destination. One of the core strategies we've employed is the development of new narratives that link selected sites along the Danube to a compelling story, which can be experienced by tourists. We recognized that individual sites alone might not be enough to attract visitors, but by creating a trail of interconnected stories and experiences, we could generate significant interest and foster a collective memory of the Danube region. One of the key outcomes of the project is the creation of green travel products. These products are now available to travel agencies, enabling them to offer story and experience-oriented packages to tourists. These packages are designed to immerse travelers in the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Danube region, providing a unique and memorable experience. During the project, we also implemented the Danube Travel Challenge. This initiative was designed to encourage individual travelers to explore the natural and cultural treasures of the Danube region independently. We provided them with the tools and resources developed during the project, allowing them to create their own unforgettable experiences along the Danube. 2. WAS THE PROJECT'S IMPACT ON POLICY MAKING AS EXPECTED? The project's impact on policy making was not the primary objective, as our main focus was on changing the approach of touristic regions and organizations. However, the project did have a significant impact on the tourism landscape in the Danube macro-region. The project's success was demonstrated by our ability to engage relevant stakeholders through the establishment of product clubs and by promoting our ideas at conferences and to interested travelers. By fostering collaboration and sharing innovative approaches, we were able to shift the mindset of key players in the tourism industry towards more sustainable and responsible practices. 3. HAVE THE PROJECT RESULTS INFLUENCED POLICY DECISIONS OR LED TO ANY CHANGES IN THE FIELD? While we may not have directly influenced policy decisions, our project has indirectly contributed to the broader discourse surrounding sustainable tourism. Our project aimed at supporting sustainable tourism development through innovative promotion concepts and the enhancement of existing mobility management tools. As a result, we have observed notable shifts in the approach of touristic regions and organizations within the field. One of the most apparent changes has been the increased openness of touristic regions and organizations to adopt the new narratives, product clubs, mobility centers, and other innovative strategies that our project introduced. These changes reflect a growing recognition within the field of the importance of sustainability and innovative approaches to tourism development. 4. HOW CAN FUTURE PROJECTS BETTER SUPPORT USE OF THE RESULTS TO DRIVE POSITIVE CHANGE? The project partnership is a strong platform to drive positive change during project implementation phase. Now the partners will continue to work on the topic, but in their own sphere of influence. For future projects, follow up financing would help to keep activities going and developing further.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to strengthen sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and resources (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project main objective is to support sustainable tourism development. New narratives and sustainable MM together with advanced institutional capacity to implement the project´s outputs will lead to the PROJECT MAIN RESULT of improved management for sustainable use of the touristic potential leading to more European citizens experiencing European cultural and natural heritage. The project activities lead to an increased intensity of cooperation between the key actors dealing with sustainable tourism and sustainable mobility at destination and route level. As sustainable tourism is one way of sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and resources, the project contributes its part to the programme result indicator. The project outputs will strengthen the cooperation between the key stakeholders by: - Establishing 8 Tourism Product Clubs (PCs) bringing together the relevant services providers for the development of sustainable tourism at destination level, meeting 3-5 times during project implementation - Bringing together the management organisations from 8 different routes and networks during project implementation - Linking the Tourism PCs with the management organisations of the 8 different routes and networks - Organizing cooperation events bringing together management organisations of routes not participating in the project, key players from the tourism market, etc. The project outputs will increase institutional capacities of key stakeholders by: - Training 7 mobility managers at route level that will transfer the concept of MM to other parts of the route - Training at least 6 additional mobility managers that will directly work in the 6 newly established mobility centres at destination level - Empowering at least 20 guides from different destinations (Winter School) with story-telling techniques - Providing the key actors with 1 promotion strategy including narratives, 7 experience-tools, 7 tested green travel products, 7 mobility plans
