Walking in cultural landscapes

In the programme area of the Interreg Nord programme there are several hiking trails. Many trails go through national parks, nature reserves or other types of protected areas. Even though this area is largely perceived as untouched wilderness people have lived here for almost 10 000 years. This human presence has left traces that can tell us about the history of area and deepen the experience of hiking in this cultural landscape. To develop methods for localizing cultural remains and make them accessible for entrepreneurs and the general public makes it possible for entrepreneurs to offer a wider range of products to their clients and new experiences to the users of the hiking trails. The project will work with three hiking trails, Kunsleden (within the municipality of Sorsele, sweden), Vindelvaggileden between Ammarnäs in Sweden and Krokstrand in Norway and finally the trail Nordlandsruta (between Harvassdalen and Saltfjellet in Norway). These are saami areas and a lage part of the cultural landscape and the cultural traces will tell of saami history. Partners in the project are Västerbotten¿s museum in Sweden, Nord university, Helgeland museum, Salten friluftsråd and Sijti Jarnge, all in Norway. The project time will be close to two years. The vision of the project is that in five to ten years, the cultural landscape and the cultural traces close to hiking trails in the programme area are used to a larger extent then today as a resource that has given entrepreneurs possibilities to create new products. The users of the hiking trails will also have more knowledge about the area¿s cultural history and a possibility to experience the cultural landscape/cultural traces around the trails in a deeper way. To reach that the project will organize cross border workshops for entrepreneurs in tourism from Sweden and Norway together with the project¿s partners. There will also be open workshops for the public. Methods to help localizing cultural traces in the surroundings of the hiking trails with the help of modern technique will be developed. A book/booklet will be produced that shows how the cultural landscape and cultural traces can be used by entrepreneurs as a resource in their business. Detailed information about selected parts of the cultural landscape and cultural traces will be made that can be used both by entrepreneurs and the public using the hiking trails.

I Interreg Nords-programområde finns många vandringsleder. Flera av dem går igenom nationalparker, naturreservat eller annan skyddad natur. Vad som sällan framgår är att dessa leder går i ett landskap där människan levt och vandrat i närmare 10 000 år. Denna närvaro har satt spår som kan berätta om området historia och fördjupa upplevelsen av att vandra i områdets kulturlandskap. Att utveckla metoder för att lokalisera kulturspåren i landskapet i anslutning till vandringsleder och sedan tillgängliggöra dessa för entreprenörer inom turism och för allmänheten ger möjligheter att utveckla och bredda utbudet för företagare och för nya upplevelser för allmänheten som använder lederna. Projektet kommer att arbeta runt vandringslederna Kungsleden inom Sorsele kommun i Sverige, Vindelvaggileden mellan Ammarnäs i Sorsle kommun och Krokstrand i Rana kommun samt leden Nordlandsruta inom Helgeland. Detta är ett samiskt område och en stor del av kulturlandskapet och kulturminnena berättar om samisk historia. Naturligtvis är det ett idag levande samiskt kulturlandskap. Partners i projektet är Västerbottens museum i Sverige och Nord universitet, Salten friluftsråd, Helgeland museum och Sijti Jarnge i Norge. Projektet kommer att pågå nästan 2 år. Projektets vision är att kulturlandskapet och kulturspår längs vandringsleder i programområdet om 5-10 år används, i större utsträckning än idag, som en resurs som gett företag möjligheter att skapa nya produkter och av brukarna av vandringslederna som ett sätt att få nya upplevelser och en större kunskap om områdets kulturarv. Våra mål är att turistföretagare i projektområdet har fått kunskap om kulturlandskapet/kulturspår i området och fått verktyg att använda den kunskapen i sin verksamhet samt att allmänheten som brukar vandringslederna har fått möjlighet att få kunskap om och möjlighet att uppleva kulturlandskapet/kulturspår i ledernas närhet på ett djupare sätt. För att nå dit kommer vi att att hålla gränsöverskridande workshops med turistföretagare från Sverige och Norge tillsammans med projektets partners. Vi kommer även att hålla öppna workshops för allmänheten. Metoder för att underlätta lokaliseringen av kulturspår i vandringsledernas närhet med hjälp av modern teknik kommer att utvecklats. En skrift som beskriver hur kulturlandskapet och kulturspår kan användas av företagare som en resurs i deras verksamhet skall produceras och Information om utvalda delar av kulturlandskapet eller kulturspår i analog och digital form som kan brukas av både företag och allmänheten kommer också att produceras.

Project of the Month – Hiking in Cultural Landscapes: The Swedish and Norwegian mountains, often referred to as Europe’s last wilderness, are a cultural landscape where people have worked and lived for almost 10000 years. Today it is an active cultural landscape where, among other things, reindeer husbandry is an important part. The goal of the Interreg Nord project Hiking in the Cultural Landscape is that tourism entrepreneurs in the project area have gained knowledge about the cultural landscape/cultural trails in the area and have the tools to use that knowledge in their activities and that the public who use the hiking trails have the opportunity to gain knowledge and the opportunity to experience the cultural landscape/cultural trails in a deeper way. The project area is the land around the Nordlandsruta hiking trails between Harrvassdalen and Bolna, Kungsleden within Sorsele and Vindelvaggileden. The project wants to develop methods for localising cultural tracks with modern tools and by holding workshops with entrepreneurs and the general public in the project area, the project gathers local knowledge about the cultural landscape and also knowledge of which parts of the cultural landscape can be lifted for tourism and which parts that should not be lifted. The results of the project will be published in a book. Currently, several workshops and information sessions have been held, both digitally and physically. Field inventories have been made along the trails to test methods to locate cultural tracks and the work on the project’s book is almost complete. Limiting oneself to working according to today’s national borders gives a false picture of the area’s history and there are similar challenges and opportunities for hiking tourism on both sides of the border.
