In recent years efforts have been intensified to emphasize the importance of barrier-free tourism: the goal of “Tourism for all” movement is to reduce barriers to travel. Besides its social aims, the development of this sector also has serious economic effects: it opens up opportunities for attracting new target groups, thereby increasing the number of visitors, especially off-seasons. The performance of Hungary and Serbia lag far behind Western Europe in terms of tourism accessibility. Thus, the main aim of the project initiated by the partner municipalities is to develop barrier-free tourism in the Baja-Sombor region in order to ensure equal access to the area’s natural and cultural heritage-based tourism experience also for the impaired and to utilise the hitherto unmet economic potential of accessible tourism. Our methodology follows a complex approach including the development of physical & infocommunication accessibility as well as social sensitization: -Designing joint plans (development concept with value inventory & joint project ideas; joint classification label, visual identity) -Constructing a barrier-free visitor centre & exhibition hall (396m2) -Developing barrier-free joint tourism products & services (accessible thematic routes, mobile app, special vehicles) -Organising joint events & tours with sensitizing actions -Organising workshops to improve the service providers’ knowledge on accessible tourism -Creating a reliable online information platform -Promoting the joint accessible tourism destination All actions cover both sides of the region targeting the harmonised development of a joint destination resulting in an even stronger integration of the area. With continuing the collaboration of the Greenways project, slow tourism approach can be strengthened ensuring sustainability (green tourism products & services; multiplier effects improving local economy). Targeted awareness-raising actions contribute to a more inclusive cross-border society.
