The high rate of youth unemployment, in particular NEETs and women, in the Mediterranean basin has economic and social consequences that are not specific to one country, but rather impact all Mediterranean countries. These groups share common challenges like lack of education, unequal access to education and employment, mismatch of their skills with the needs of the labour market, and they suffer a difficult transition from school to work. SIRCLES partners want to explore new employment opportunities by applying the circular economy model applied to the biowaste sector. The project will mainly focus on developing new capacities oriented to business development and separation, collection, composting and agriculture processes. The training will be tested through 7 pilot projects that address the hotel, food retail and household sectors, adjusted to the diverse local contexts of each territory involved in the project. Consequently, SIRCLES will contribute to the creation of green jobs by involving the most vulnerable sectors of the population and supporting environmental sustainability.

SIRCLES project good practices booklet: turning biowaste into social inclusion: At the heart of the SIRCLES project lies a commitment to promoting social inclusion. By tackling the issue of biowaste, the project not only mitigates environmental concerns but also creates opportunities for marginalized communities to be actively involved. One of the practical aspects of the SIRCLES project is the development of small-scale, low-cost composting plants. These facilities efficiently convert biowaste into valuable compost, reducing waste and providing a sustainable source of nutrients for agriculture. Moreover, education and awareness played a crucial role in the SIRCLES project. By sensitizing people and restaurants to the importance of responsible waste management, the project encouraged active participation in the reduction of biowaste. With a practical focus on composting, community engagement, and cross-border cooperation, the SIRCLES project represents a significant step towards addressing the issues of biowaste and social inclusion. It demonstrated that with the right perspective and collective effort, we can turn challenges into opportunities for a more sustainable and inclusive future. Learn more SIRCLES project's Pilot Composting Facilities: The SIRCLES project’s partners in Spain, Greece, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia have created leaflets explaining the success stories within the pilot composting facilities built under the ENI CBC Med Project. The leaflets are ready to print for anyone interested and consist of two main bodies: the explanation of the project and how it has impacted local stakeholders, and another body explaining how each pilot area works. The documents are designed with the objective of increasing visibility and raising awareness on how SIRLCES project positively impacts the involved NEETs and women’s lives, as well as explaining how the pilot facilities work and how compost in created. SIRCLES shares policy toolkit for sustainable waste management: The SIRCLES model, implemented to tackle organic waste composting challenges in Mediterranean countries, offers crucial insights into sustainable waste management. It encompasses technology, regulations, and awareness to establish effective collection and composting practices, adapting to local legal frameworks and citizen awareness levels. Lessons from seven pilot plants emphasize involving local institutions, fostering stakeholder collaboration, private sector engagement for financial viability, public awareness campaigns, and continuous education. These lessons result in policy recommendations for local authorities, including prioritizing awareness and education, understanding local contexts, fostering community engagement, and implementing incentive systems. These insights underscore the importance of citizen involvement, industry participation, and educational collaboration for achieving circular economies in cities. Implementing these recommendations can create efficient biowaste collection and composting, reducing landfill waste and promoting circular economies by transforming biowaste into valuable compost for agriculture. Citizen participation, industry engagement, and sustainability education play pivotal roles in building resource-efficient urban environments, ensuring a better future for generations to come.

Local Strategic Alliance for circular economy and social inclusion set up and involving 21 organisations. 5 curricula focused on skills development and training. 7 pilots based on composting plants and organic farming sites . 200 contracts for logistic operators and composting managers, technical promoters, and socio-labour insertion of technicians in the circular biowaste management loop. 7 policy toolkits employment and training for in the circular economy sector.
