Sheep and reindeer husbandries are important livelihoods and a part of the cultural heritage in the Northern peripheral areas with low economic diversity. Climate change has endangered their sustainability e.g. by increasing gastrointestinal parasitism. It is a pervasive challenge to production. Parasitism is currently controlled through routine medication, but resistance is limiting the mitigation potential. Bark from the forest industry is rich in bioactive compounds that may prevent and/or treat sheep’s and reindeer's gastrointestinal parasitic infections. These compounds also control ruminal methane emissions, which could greatly decrease the environmental load of ruminant production. Currently most bark produced by the forest industry is combusted for energy generation. In the present project, a feasibility study aiming at a main project proposal for developing high-value feed additives from bark generated by forest industry will be conducted. Other potential bioactive plant raw materials for feed additives that may be relevant for some areas will also be investigated as feed additives. The feasibility study will include literature reviews on antiparasitic and anti-methanogenic activities of plant extracts, environmentally sound extraction methods, supply chains of the raw material and economic viability of the production of feed supplements. Industry stakeholders will be engaged for identifying research priorities, with the aim of assessing the productization potential of the extractives or plant materials. Utilisation of high-value bioactive compounds would enable cascading use of bark, and thus, increasing the material efficiency of the forest industry and competitiveness of the business.
