Fish&Chips is focused on sea, fishing, maritime traditions and aims to promote the archaeological and cultural heritage of the area of Taranto in Puglia and the island of Corfu in Greece, creating concrete opportunities for diversification of fishing communities’ economic activities and seasonal adjustment. Fish&Chips project was born from the needs of the fishermen communities of Puglia and Greece to start a process of development of their territories increasing the value of the coastal and marine environment’s cultural heritage. As a matter of fact, the involved areas are characterized by a widespread presence of both cultural elements (archaeological, architectural, both emerged and submerged) and cultural intangible materials (crafts, traditions, events), proving the intense interaction between man and coastal environment over the centuries. F Thanks to this project, an Ecomuseum will be realised in Taranto and Corfu, where exhibitions, experimental archaeological workshops on naval carpentry, fishing nets, traps and purple production as well as tasting labs to re-discover the ancient fish recipes will be organised. Visitors can experiment new itineraries through the use of canoes and traditional vessels, guided by archaeologists and fishers to the discovery of aquaculture facilities and traditional fishing techniques. Also the Map of Cultural Heritage, a database collecting tangible and intangible maritime elements of the project area, will be created and made available for web users. The University of Foggia, Department of Human Sciences, is the lead beneficiary of this project in cooperation with two Italian partners- Puglia Region, Department for Economy of Culture, Tourism and Valorization of Territory and the Italian General Confederation of Enterprises, Professions and Self-employment of Taranto- and two Greek partners- the Ionian University and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corfu. Associated partners are the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto MarTA and the Fisherman’s Association of Petritis (Corfu).

Expected Results (EN):

The joint planning and co-design of environmentally and culturally homogeneous territorial entities, the Ecomuseums and the Charter of Cultural Heritage, will create greater awareness in the expected actions for conservation and protection of heritage. Local institutions will have access to useful tools for planning targeted interventions; local communities, territorial and business associations will initiate economic redevelopment processes. In the affected areas it is expected to increase tourism, encouraged by siding with important cultural centers (eg. The MARTA), as confirmed by the recent positive trend in tourist flows. The project will contribute to diversification of supply routes and enabling new experiences of sustainable and responsible tourism, even in areas still affected marginally by the great flows, ensuring a constant demand throughout the year. All activities will be conducted starting from existing local assets for the implementation of integrated policies for local self-sustainable development. Training activities for tour operators will be required to enhance competitiveness in the sector, including contributing to a more effective integration of people at risk of marginalization. The definition of a virtuous model which provides for the drafting of a Charter of the Eco Services will define organizational and quality standards and will attract private investment. Very important will be the design of a cross-border development strategy based on the approach CLLD (art. 10 REG ue 1299/2013) and which aims to encourage the leadership of the local community by which the local community plays an essential role and stimulates not only the creation but also the ""sealing"" of relations between operators (intra and inter) through adherence to a uniform model for the management and promotion of the territory through the creation of a public-private partnership across borders The model may be replicated in other coastal reality in the future.

Expected Outputs (EN):

FISH&CHIPS expected outputs are: -Census of written and iconographic sources and material evidence (artifacts and ecofacts) and intangible from ancient to contemporary; research in environmental archeology as a proof of the interaction between man and environment; characterization of the faunal and paleobotanists findings for the identification and census of species and techniques; archaeometrical analysis of organic residues. The two University of Foggia and Corfu will share the database (Charter of Cultural Heritage) and will take care of the collection of tangible and intangible sources on maritime and their registration in the database. - Identification and definition of the geographical area and the tangible and intangible elements that characterize the Ecomuseum - Rediscovery and identification of local identity involving the communities - Organization of 10 experimental archeological educational workshops related to shipbuilding, mussel farm, pots production and networks, and reproduction of fish preserves and gourmet dishes inspired by ancient recipes and their modern interpretation. The laboratories, joined in a network, will perform the function of integration and transmission of qualified knowledge of the coast and sea resources; they will be organized also in webinar and there will be an exchange of theacher among the partners involved. - Definition of cultural tourism itineraries within the eco and infrastructure spaces (identification sign and descriptive panels at strategic points) - Production of a video documentary about the products and the trades of the sea - Definition of a virtual Ecomuseums network for a future enlargement to the whole Adriatic/Ionian Area - Development of sustainable and traditional productive activities and services, namely creation of productive niches aims at the development of the local communities - Multilingual project communication package useful also for the future life of the Ecomuseum network
