Description (EN):

The main goal of Ofidia2 project is to prevent wildfires and protect the biodiversity in the forests and rural areas in the region of Apulia (Italy) and in Epirus (Greece). A fruitful cooperation between scientific research, cutting-edge technologies, policymakers and Italian and Greek public agencies will improve the safety of environment from wildfires danger. A network of technologies, infrastructures and scientific knowledge is at the heart of the project that aims to develop environmental protection measures by setting up an operational big data infrastructure. With the help of HD video cameras, wireless sensors networks and drones, the stakeholders will effectively patrol high-danger and remotely located areas in the two Regions. A new control room in the Regional Civil Protection office in Bari will be the headquarters of the necessary operational activities in Puglia. Lead Partner of the project is CMCC Foundation; the project partners are Decentralized Administration of Epirus-Western Macedonia, Forest Directorate (DAEWM), University of Ioannina, Puglia Region – Civil Protection Section; associated partners: Municipality of Lecce, ARIF (Regional Agency for Irrigation and Forest Activities). Ofidia2 project capitalizes the results of the previous project Ofidia, already funded during the 2007-2013 Programming Period, by covering a larger area in both regions.

Achievements (EN):

Key topics are: • Forecasting, data platform and monitoring •Increased resolution of weather models w.r.t. OFIDIA1 (2 x 2 km) Calibration of existing Fire Danger indices with observed data; Fire behaviour (based on model and/or observed data from sensors) Processing chains and related scientific data management platform Time-series based analytics from real time monitoring (e.g. sensors) Real-time monitoring (link to existing sensors network) • Advanced GUI and DSS GIS based tools/DSS for the management/routing of people and vehicles Advanced multichannel, visualization tools (extension of current ones) • Infrastructure Data and computational platform (extension of the existing one) Integration/new installation of sensors/network, IP cameras, tablets, control room equipment, drones.

Delivered Outputs (EN):

•120 sensors were installed on over 100 hectares of trees in Puglia and Region of Epirus. The sensors are both weather stations and multi-platform sensors •a big data analytics that handles two different kinds of data: forecasts and observations. •An efficient GIS-based Decision Support System helps forest managers with their decision-making tasks during forest fires • A dashboard able to process data streams from wireless sensors networks, weather stations, video cameras and drones. • FireAware is a App for iOS devicesthat allows citizens to take an active role by simply sending a geo-referenced real time notification any time they spot a fire on the Italian territory.
