Both Baranya and Osijek-Baranja counties have set the development of tourism as cornerstones of economic development. The existing institutional co-operation of the two twin counties offer a good starting point to embark upon a joint development in improving accessibility in tourism. We are addressing two, interconnected challenges: 1) existing multifaceted barriers to accessibility in regional tourism services and attractions, that reduce the usability of services and facilities 2) the need for diversifying and expanding the customer base of tourism services in the region by addressing new target groups. As for barriers to accessibility, both Croatia and Hungary have provided for improving basic accessibility to public spaces, which chiefly focused on providing physical access for persons with movement disabilities. However, there are further efforts to be made to ensure accessibility from the perspective of different disability groups and from the perspective of groups with reduced capacities, who are not classified as disabled. Info-communication barriers will also have to be addressed, which is an explicit service gap at the moment. Lastly, accessibility is ensured if service providers are trained both at management and at operational staff level in creating and operating tourist services with a view to ensuring accessibility. The project targets three target groups of different dimensions: a) Tourist persons with reduced accessibility - disability is understood in the context of this project as being a multidimensional experience for the person. b) Service provider staff (tourism support services, such as public transport services, public services) and tourism service providers, c) Institutional actors: public actors responsible for the development of the region. The overall, long-term objective to project is to offer a secure, full experience for the reduced capacity target group in the region and to contribute to the development of the region as an accessible tourism destination. The direct objective of the project is to create the institutional and human resource framework and capacities for converting the region in an accessible destination. The specific objectives are a) Developing the knowledge-base and disseminating knowledge on accessibility tourism, b) Establishing a local certification framework of accessibility tourism and a new trustmark, c) Providing credible information for tourists with reduced capacities about the accessibility of tourism and related services, d) Establishing an institutional cooperation in the form of an Accessible Baranya-Baranja Centre of Excellence. The outputs of the project are: a) Developing the knowledge-base and disseminating knowledge on accessibility tourism (1 methodological framework and practical guide on creating and operating accessible tourism services), training of 100 persons in the subject matter of creating and operating accessible tourism services, Dissemination events on accessible tourism (100 persons participating in 2 events). b) Establishing a supplier and site certification framework of accessibility tourism (1 accessible tourism service and site certification methodology), 1 survey of tourism providers in the region and 1 analysis, 1 certification-based trustmark and operational and publicity documentation and its dissemination, c) Providing credible information for tourists with reduced capacities about the accessibility characteristics of tourism and related services (Accessible Baranja website, Accessible Baranja mobile application and database, 1 information campaign), d) Establishing an institutional co-operation in the form of an Accessible Baranya-Baranja Centre of Excellence for Accessible Tourism (1 co-operation agreement, 2 Partnership meetings, 1 Partnership event)

Achievements (EN):

Disability should not be an obstacle for tourism is the motto the partners of the project stood by. They focused their activities on identifying the issues preventing people with disabilities to participate in or access the tourist related content in the border region, evaluating the service providers according to the accessibility criteria, educating workers in tourism on how to make their services more inclusive and on making the main tourist points accessible by establishing a contact point for tourists with disability. The project also included the launch of a new accessibility equipment rental service, aiming at making the border area more inclusive and as such more appealing to all tourists.
