Description (EN):

Project will contribute to climate neutrality with development of agriculture-related solutions for capturing CO2 from the air and deploying it into the soil. This will be done by introduction and uptake of “carbon farming” practices, business model, monitoring solutions and policies for storing GHC as soil organic carbon (SOC). Project will result in enhanced role of agricultural sector to reduction of greenhouse emissions and contribution to climate neutrality of Central Europe. Carbon farming concept is very new (2020), therefore techniques, business model and policies still need to be designed and tested. WP1 will test 6 carbon farming techniques in 9 CE countries and develop transnational guide for carbon farming TECHNIQUES as solution for mainstreaming it to 45 farmers. WP2 will test of carbon farming business model in 9 CE countries and develop transnational carbon farming BUSINESS MODEL ready made for upscaling. WP3 will develop standardized carbon sequestration monitoring methodology and upscale carbon farming policies. Main beneficiaries will be farmers and agriculture support institutions, receiving solutions for carbon farming. Policy makers will benefit with proposed solutions, environmental NGOs and SMEs will be included within business model. Carbon farming is very new concept, therefore transnational learning about it is more effective, then learning by each partner separately. Secondly, specific knowledge about CO2 sequestration modelling is hard to find, therefore UNIBO will transfer unique knowledge to other partners. Project will have strong uptake potential, because it is first project to capture CO2 from agriculture in CE and third project in the whole EU considering this topic. Transferability will be guaranteed with proposing novel solutions and high number of associated partners interested in uptake. Sustainability will be supported by Carbon Farming Cluster supporting EU carbon farming policy process 2023-2030.

Actual Achievements (EN):

The Carbon Farming CE project has made significant progress in promoting sustainable agriculture across Central Europe through collaborative efforts to improve soil carbon sequestration. Transnational Carbon Farming Training Material for Farmers (Deliverable 1.1.1): This basic material provides farmers with detailed descriptions of seven carbon farming techniques and presents 12 best practice examples. It was developed in a transnational collaboration between nine countries and 11 project partners, focusing on practical, farmer-oriented content. The training material is designed to improve soil carbon levels to mitigate climate change and enhancing soil resilience and food security. Carbon Farming Business Model Approach Guide (Deliverable D.2.1.1): Aimed at fostering a transnational carbon farming business model, this guide explores various cooperation models tested across nine Central European countries. The approach is pivotal in influencing stakeholder behaviour and integrating carbon farming into the agrifood production process. By highlighting the economic, environmental, and social impacts, this guide serves as a blueprint for expanding carbon sequestration practices, crucial for reversing soil degradation, ensuring food security, and mitigating climate change. Carbon Sequestration Monitoring Methodology (Deliverable 3.2.1): This deliverable provides a comprehensive road-map for monitoring soil carbon sequestration, essential for quantifying the impact of carbon farming techniques. The methodology combines simple farmer self-assessments with more complex scientific measures to offer a balanced view of soil health improvement. This dual approach enables stakeholders to select the most appropriate monitoring strategy, fostering widespread adoption of best practices. Pilot Projects and Testing: Seasonal Pilots (M1 and M2 documents): The project conducted preliminary testing of carbon farming techniques during the 2023 season, with plans to continue and expand these pilots in 2024. The project continues to evolve, with ongoing efforts to refine techniques and expand outreach. The continued engagement with farmers, SMEs, NGOs, and policymakers is vital for the sustained success of carbon farming initiatives, ensuring that the benefits of these practices are realized widely and effectively.

Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

EuropeanGreenDeal Project directly contributes to the EU Green Deal by testing solutions for managing and storing carbon in the soil and promoting sustainable source of low-carbon food (pg. 12).
Project also supports Carbon Pricing policies by development and testing of carbon farming business models. (pg. 5)
Lastly project also contributes to development of future carbon markets considering agriculture as important contributor to carbon sequestration (pg. 20).
TerritorialAgenda2030 Project contributes to Territorial Agenda 2030 by development of sustainable and resilient solutions for decarbonisation. Climate neutrality will not only be achieved by energy efficiency and renewable energy, but also with capture and storage of CO2 in the soil.
Agenda 2030 is recognizing sustainable agriculture as one of important sectors for mitigation of climate change.
Last, but not least, carbon farming is also one of nature-based solutions, also supported by Territorial Agenda 2030.
EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion Project contributes to EUSAIR action with transition to low-carbon economy as important step for Adriatic and Ionian Region. Further it supports techniques and technologies to minimize carbon footprint. Project also directly contributes to environmentally-friendly agricultural practices, identified as one of EUSAIR priority actions.
