- Industrial Circular Economy Knowledge Platform (TKO) project 2020-2022, part of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland ecosystem development programme. Digipolis in Kemi acted as the national coordinator of the TKO project. As a result of TKO, a national knowledge base was created to highlight the knowledge and innovation potential of the entire industrial circular economy in Finland. The national knowledge platform, which was created in the project, also serves as a forum for the industrial circular economy and a channel for sharing information between companies and public authorities. The knowledge base enhanced cooperation and partnerships between companies, eco-industrial parks, research and education organizations, and the development of special expertise in the industrial circular economy. The TKO project also strengthened the Noric circular economy network ,as well as the EU level network, of Finnish actors in the field of industrial circular economy. (EN) | The CircUpscale project can fully utilise the learnings and results of the TKO project - and adapt the results in an NPA context. Some of the international contacts initiated by TKO, including e.g. starting the dialogue with the Iceland Ocean Cluster, will act as natural points of departure for CircUpscale discussions on Main project content and consortium. (EN), LTKT 2.0 project 2020-2023 is regional project , co-funded by the ERDF, to promote industrial circular economy in Lapland, Finland. Digipolis Oy acts as as lead partner, with co-partners of Lapland University of Applied Sciences and Lappia Vocational College. The LTKT 2.0 project has actively promoted the international cooperation and visibility of the industrial circular economy in Lapland, Finland. As an example, Digipolis hosted the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) special session in Decemeber, 2022, on eco-industrial parks. LTKT project has also developed methods to identify new potential industrial circular economy pilots and initiatives in Lapland, Finland. (EN) | Digipolis, as coordinator of the LTKT project, has excellent possibilties to utilize the learning and results of the LTKT project in the CircUpcale project – but in a NPA scale. The work of LTKT in identifying the pilots in Finnish Lapland, as well as the cooperation with R&D institutes in Lapland, serve as good additional starting points for CircUpscale (EN), Baltic Industrial Symbiosis BIS project (2019-2021), part of 2014-2020 Interreg VB Baltic Sea: Digipolis acted as partner at the Baltic Industrial Symbioisis BIS project, led by the Kalundborg Symbios. The BIS project aimed at screening resources and matchmaking companies eager in the field of industrial symbiosis, including development of sustainable green business models. The BIS project has also provided important material and tools to further develop Industrial Symbiosis, including e.g. a Handbook on Nordic-Baltic Industrial Symbiosis. (EN) | The tools, documents, materials, as well the contact network created at the BIS project, can be be utilized at the CircUpscale project. The BIS enabled joint learning, Nordic-Baltic benchmarking of good practices, as well as joint communication initiatives of industrial circular economy – all these elements can be utilized at the CircUpscale project work. (EN), Lapland, Finland as EU Modern Cluster (2014) : In 2014, Lapland was selected by the European Commission as one of Europe’s model areas for the modern cluster development in the sustainable refinement of natural resources. Digipolis in Kemi coordinated the Modern Cluster development activities in Lapland, with industrial circular economy playing a key role in the cluster development. (EN) | The Modern Cluster work set the scene for the Digipolis internatonal clustering and networking and intenranational work on circular economy. Many of the international contacts and methods created by the Modern Cluster project are still useful from the viewpoint of NPA level networking in CircUpscale. (EN), KpH has had an active role in the VRI programme, a national program for mobilization for research-based innovation in business, financed by the Research Council of Norway. The VRI program lasted from 2008 to 2017, and KpH took on a leading role in the project from 2014 to 2017. In addition to being responsible for the industrial sector, KpH held four intermediary positions.
- From 2018, VRI was renewed and launched as FORREGION (For the region) with the same ambition to develop regional innovation through R&D collaboration. KpH was now engaged by the municipality, Nordland county municipality, as project manager. FORREGION will facilitate innovation for restructuring within four different sector areas. KpH also has a position as an intermediary for the ACT cluster. (EN) | Through this work, KPH has established itself as a central player in the regional innovation system, and as a solid innovation company in a national context. The large regional network and established collaborative relationships locally, regionally and nationally provide a solid basis for the development and implementation of CircUpscal. (EN), INDIGO is a large project connecting industry, research and education, funded by the Norwegian research council. INDIGO will increase the capacity for green innovation, restructure and develop new value chains in mineral-, process-, energy- and goods-producing industry in Helgeland. Industry in the Helgeland region is central for achieving EU's Green Growth Strategy, the UN's sustainability goals, the goal of growth in all regions and Nordland County Municipality's strategy for Smart Specialization (S3). INDIGO started up in 2022 and last for five years. (EN) | KPH participated in the consortium that developed the project and take part in the implementationa leader of the steering group. The companies and research institutions participating in the project are all members of the ACT Cluster. These close relations is a solid fundament for collaboration between KPH, ACT and INDIGO, which in turn lays the foundation for innovation and development. In the implementation of CircUpscale, we will use knowledge, networks and arenas created through INDIGO. (EN), EDIH Oceanopolis is one of two Norwegian projects financed by the European Digital Innovation Hub programme. Digitization is central to the transition to a more circular economy. EDIH Oceanopolis will contribute to increased use of digital tools and expertise for increased competitiveness, green transition and new sustainable services/products. EDIH Oceanopolis started in December 2022 and is initially funded for three years. KPH is a partner in the project. (EN) | The opportunities that open up through KPH's participation and role in EDIH Oceanopolis are a very good match for CircUpscale. Digitization is central to speeding up the circular economy. EDIH Oceanopolis will provide infrastructure, expertise and will, through mapping,and mentors, contribute to SMEs being more successful in adopting digital technology in their own transformation. EDIH Oceanopolis supplements and complements CircUpscale very well. (EN), From 2021, KPH and ACT Cluster are members of A.SPIRE, the association that connects process industry across Europe. A.SPIRE manages and implements the co-programmed partnership Process4Planet. The mission of A.SPIRE is to ensure the development of enabling technologies and best practices along all stages of large-scale existing value chain productions that will contribute to a resource-efficient process industry. Circular economy and industrial symbiosis are prioritized strategies in the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, Process4Planet. (EN) | A.Spire is a central arena for the transition of the European process industry. A.Spire collaborates with the European Commission and the roadmap; Process4Planet will realize the ambitions of the EU's Green Deal. A relation to EU is useful in the development and implementation of CircUpscale. For the implementation of CircUpscale, KPH's growing network for industry and innovation agencies in Europe will be relevant. (EN), UrbanMine is a research project that collaborates with municipal and private actors when they study institutional frameworks, attitudes and handling of mineral waste as a resource. The question asked is what political, institutional and business barriers and opportunities exist in the reuse/recycling of metals and minerals. The project is financed by the Research Council of Norway. The project leader is Norduniversitetet and they collaborate with Nordland's Research Institute and Sintef Helgeland. They are all partners in the ACT cluster, and the project has already been presented and discussed in the ACT Circular Economy working group. (EN) | CircUpscale can learn a lot from this ongoing project. KpH's close collaboration with the researchers behind the project facilitates for transfer of experiences, findings, methods and contact networks to CircUpscale. (EN)
