Description (EN):

Limiting carbon intensive raw material use in the construction sector is a key priority all through NWE and should not only be dealt with in new built but also for the growing deep energy retrofit market of homes using place based circular solutions. Circular Reno implements 4 scalable biobased deep energy retrofit packages of a facade and roof system for collective & individual housing using different kinds of bio-based materials: straw, wood, bio polymer, miscanthus. The packages will be used in retrofits on 4 sites on in total 88 homes in social housing to scale its use and to facilitate public authorities to improve market conditions. To supply the materials for these retrofit components the project will sets up 6 place based cost-effective value chains involving farmers, prefab industrials for construction, builders, social housing organisations & public authorities in 4 countries: NL (3), IR (1), FR (1), & DE (1). Transnational cooperation is key to build the proper supporting packages to enable production of local biobased raw materials for construction by farmers, manufacturing of bio-based facade & roof panels by prefab industrial. Modelling & decision-making tools will be developed to support the uptake of these emerging solutions by all value chain stakeholders. Farm, factory & renovated house visits, as well as workshop, MOOC & training will be organised to ensure a buy in at scale in BE, DE, FR, IR, & NL. Specific efforts will be made to improve building regulation policies at regional, national & EU levels, to assess carbon storage economic valuation to boost project economics & to develop a forecast tool for regional construction material mix supporting policy makers. Our project will be implemented by 4 types of partners from 5 NWE countries (BE, DE, FR, IR, & NL): 4 market development teams, 4 social housing organisation, 4 industrial SME and 5 facilitators with expertise that will reinforce the consortium.

Actual Achievements (EN):

During the first six months, the consortium focused on making starting with the project, its work packages and deliverables. We have organised several meetings, events and site visits including the kickoff event in Lille, the first live partner days in the Netherlands, site visits to our partner Miscancell and Rc Panels and an online partner meeting (WP3). In this way, the consortium got a kickstart, shared best practices and the cooperation between project partners was aligned. As a result of the collective effort of the project partners, work has been done on all deliverables for Period 1. Not all deliverables have been achieved however (D2.1.1 and D2.2.1). Work has been partially achieved on the other deliverables for period 1. A detailled state of play of these deliverables will be provided with the second project report. Due to the collective efforts of Building Balance, Neo-Eco and Miscancell, one prototype of a miscanthus panel has been made, which will be used further in the process to retrofit houses at the pilot site. Besides product testing, also the pilot sites itself have been assed in the four Interreg NWE member states where one pilot site is planned. Besides an assesment of the baseline situation, also discussions with leaseholders have been held about the potential for biobased retrofitting. Last but not least, the communication strategy for the project has been finalised based on the input of Global Energiesprong Alliance, Kore Retrofit, Building Balance, GreenFlex, Cluster Eco-construction and LEG/DENA. Besides progress on the achievement of the deliverables for Period 1, work on other deliverables (and with it vital parts of the Circular Reno project) has occured as well. Building Balance has for instance worked on setting up three regional circular eco systems in the provincie of Noord-Brabant. In the southeast of Brabant, a local circular eco system is focussing on straw production to be used in isolation material for local retrofits. Another local circular eco system in the mid of Brabant is still chosing between hemp and miscanthus production. The third regional eco system in the West of Brabant is still in the set-up phase. All three value chains have farmers, agriculture contractors, builders, municipalities and housing associations in the value chain coalition. The province of Brabant and the Rabobank (the biggest agriculture bank in NL) are also fully on board and help facilitate the proces. In this way, the achievement of Deliverable 1.1.1., which is scheduled for the second reporting period, comes closer. This is also the case for Deliverable 1.4.1., which ensures the creation and availbility of guidelines on crop selection, processing and procurement. Building Balance has made a morfological overview of all potential biobased building value chains. In addition, other activities relevant for the project have been undertaken during this period. For instance, meetings, discussions and training schemes with the local populas have been held to raise awereness about bio-based building. Current lead partner Building Balance has for instance invited 60 farmers, 60 builders and 20 housing assocations for meetings on this topic. The partners have made significant strides in advancing biobased construction solutions across various regions in Europe, particularly in Brabant, Hauts-de-France, and Ireland. Building Balance has successfully established three regional ecosystems in Brabant, providing vital support to Circular Reno Partners in initiating similar ecosystems in their respective areas. Notably, they have secured 31 signed declarations from housing associations across these regions, committing to the use of biobased materials, indicating strong engagement from local stakeholders. Neo-Eco conducted extensive research to identify and analyze bio-based insulation sectors in the Hauts-de-France region. Their comparative study has set the stage for developing straw insulation tailored to local needs, and collaborations with local partners have resulted in a clearer understanding of the region’s bio-insulation landscape. At the same time, Miscancell has focused on enhancing miscanthus-based insulation materials and panel boards. Initial prototypes have undergone significant technical improvements, leading to new designs scheduled for production later this year. The project has also seen the successful completion of pilot initiatives. Wonion completed a pilot project by insulating a house’s roof with straw. While the technical implementation was effective, feedback from residents highlighted challenges related to reduced attic space. Airpacks developed bio-based insulation solutions for retrofitting, achieving significant energy performance improvements in test houses. Their innovative prefabricated façade and roofing panels are set to revolutionize deep retrofitting processes by enabling faster and less invasive installations. Moreover, Kore Retrofit has built a comprehensive stakeholder network in Ireland. They organized training seminars to promote biobased construction solutions, laying crucial groundwork for a sustainable supply chain in the region. The collaborative nature of the Circular Reno project has been instrumental in achieving these milestones. By bringing together diverse expertise and resources from various partners across Europe, the project has fostered knowledge exchange and innovation, leading to the development of cutting-edge biobased materials and solutions. Furthermore, DENA and Uni Bonn established regular communication channels among German partners, leading to the preparation of essential guidelines and deliverables that support value chain development in Germany. A robust communication strategy has been implemented, including social media guidelines and visual materials to increase project visibility and stakeholder engagement, with a Circular Reno showcase page on LinkedIn now sharing updates and achievements. It’s also important to note that while much progress has been made within countries, the focus is now expanding. Following the Partner Days at the end of September, collaboration within the Transnational Working Groups (TWG) has intensified, reflecting an upward trend in cross-border cooperation. Despite the complexity of the project and challenges such as partner dropouts and organizational changes, significant progress has been made. All partners are working hard, and tangible impact is being seen on a transnational scale. To address the management issues encountered, several actions were taken. These included: - Proactive partner engagement and onboarding: Following the dropouts and delays, the project team acted to onboard a new partner, ensuring continuity and minimizing disruptions. - Enhanced communication and coordination: Regular meetings and Partner Days were organized, fostering stronger collaboration and transparency across all teams. This allowed for issues to be identified and addressed. - Reshuffling responsibilities: Tasks were redistributed between the work package leaders (RES, DENA and BB) and the project management. Here are some key achievements of the project: Netherlands: The second half of 2024 focused on growing agro-based insulation materials and conducting the first pilot projects in the construction industry. As part of Deliverable D.2.2.6, Building Balance and Wonion worked together to incorporate miscanthus straw into a real-life application. This effort culminated in the creation of the Biobased Pavilion "De Marke”, which serves as both a meeting location, and a test site. The pavilion demonstrates the practical application of miscanthus straw in construction and is open to visitors for overnight stays and events. Miscancell developed a 100% lignin-based binder, exceeding expectations, and completed Deliverable 2.2.1 ahead of schedule. RC Panels is nearing national certification for their 2.0 panel and has started steps toward international certification. Energiesprong is developing an engaging MOOC program with DENA and Uni Bonn. Germany: Uni Bonn was in the lead for D.1.4.1, where they developed a pdf document that helps choosing which value chain to set up (a crop selection guide, a processing selection guide, a building material selection guide and a procurement guide for biobased facades and roof systems). The contents of the documents were set in close collaboration with the DENA and they also received input from all other countries (NL, IR, FR). The document was finalised in period 3. Ireland: The Irish team has conducted extensive research, benefiting other countries in the project. They have identified key stakeholders, formed strong collaborations, and are preparing for significant strides despite limited resources. They are exploring grass insulation and wool-based solutions in discussions with Belgian factories. The Irish government has requested further research on local raw materials for construction. France: A shared certification framework (SEC prototype) is being developed, benefiting all stakeholders. The first multi-story bio-based building solution using Avro is in development, and early results are promising.

(EN) | The Bâti C2 project has identified and overcome some of the obstacles to increase the supply of short-circuit bio-sourced materials (hemp, clay, straw, flax, and wood) in construction sector. One of Circular Reno's partner was involved in this project. It will be interesting to use their inventory of SMEs in the bio-based materials sector, to collect feedback on the project's prototypes and to analyse how they encouraged project owners and local authorities to use local bio-sourced resources.
