Description
Description (EN): The border area between Austria and Slovenia lies at the significant historic crossroads of Europe between the Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonian Plain. It is here that the paths of great peoples and empires crossed paths and fought out centuries of battles. This is the only region in Europe, where all four major European language families border one another. The heritage of times long passed is an impressive number of historical fortifications and an enormous variety of cultural traditions.
To preserve this important heritage, a joint initiative of several mansions and castles was founded under the name Castle Road. Following the EU expansion and the Interreg SI-AT Castle Road project, the network expanded to include 37 castles, mansions, monasteries and fortifications in the area of Austria and Slovenia, joined by a family and cultural offering of a high-quality standard.
With Castle Road
2.0, new joint cross-border challenges are to be tackled and the cooperation established in the previous project is to be further developed. The aim of Castle Road
2.0 is to position the Castle Road as a European cultural route, to equip the management of mansions and castles with with new professional skills, to attract new visitors through smart visitor management, to better and more sustainably distribute guests in terms of time and location of their planned visit, to offer an intelligent information service and to raise Castle Road to a new level of quality.
With its 37 mansions, castles, monasteries and other fortifications, the cross-border Castle Road represents an important part of regional tourism. Mansions, castles and other historical buildings are also part of the shared cultural heritage and living witnesses to our common past. With the further development and strengthening of the Castle Road, the sustainability, competitiveness and resilience of regional tourism, economic development through the valorisation of cultural heritage and the strengthening of the identity of the programme area are promoted.
The Castle Road
2.0 project advocates for the recognition of the Castle Road as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, which will positively affect the tourist attractiveness and cultural value of the entire region. In line with the idea of the European cultural routes, Castle Road also places emphasis on learning from history and promoting the peaceful coexistence of cultures.
To ensure the preservation of our shared cultural heritage for future generations and to promote its further development, appropriate measures such as trainings aimed at the management of mansions and castles (owners, manager, other personnel) are to be developed. The Castle Road Expert training seeks to provide castle managers with knowledge and skills in line with the latest international standards in fields of conservation, exhibition management, cultural route management and visitor management in order to create the conditions for a sustainable strengthening of cultural tourism in the region.
An important element of sustainable cultural tourism is to avoid any form of overburdening areas with visitors at limited periods of time only. The project therefore starts with a comprehensive analysis of the structural and economic situation and development of the castles and the tourist industry as a whole. In accordance with the UNESCO recommendations for visitor management of cultural heritage sites, qualitative and quantitative goals, strategies and solutions for an optimal distribution of visitor flows in terms of time and space are to be developed. In accordance with the objectives and strategies that are to be further elaborated on, new models will be developed and tested in order to distribute visitors accordingly and increase the added value per visitor. This is done, among other things, with the help of new exhibition concepts incorporating new technologies, an interactive children's booklet and smart games. These new models also make an important contribution to increasing the knowledge of the cultural and historical significance of the castles and palaces among all visitors and to raising awareness of the need to treat this heritage with care.
At the core of the project is the development and testing of smart information management, which promotes the attracting of new guests through the use of artificial intelligence and new digital instruments and ensures the provision of high-quality information for visitors on site. As a result, a multimodal information system based on the latest technical standards is available to all members and their cooperation partners, guests and customers.
With the Castle Road
2.0 project, the Castle Road initiative would like to ensure that common bridges are built from the opposing bastions of the past.
Projekt Castle Road
Gradovi, dvorci in druge stavbe zgodovinskega pomena so namreč del skupne kulturne dediščine in žive priče skupne preteklosti.
Read more Actual Achievements (EN): During the first reporting period, the focus of all project partners was on the implementation of start-up activities in order to provide a good basis for project cooperation and implementation (planning and coordination of the content and timing of project activities, introduction to the programme documents, the content of the reporting manual and the communication and visibility manual, preparation and publication of project news on the project partners’ websites, preparation of the project poster and its appropriate affixing at the project partners’ headquarters, etc.).
There were 3 tax group meetings (26.3.2024, Rakičan Castle; 26.4.2024, Zoom; 28.5.2024, Kornberg Castle), which served to plan the implementation of the project activities, the ongoing review of the work done and the drafting of strategic decisions.
Each project partner has put together an internal project group within their organisation, which consists of the employees employed in the project. Likewise, contact has been made by each project partner with the castles in their region, who have expressed their intention to participate in the Castle Road 2.0 project and start working with them. New castles (Beltinci, Obermureck, Borl, Kohfidisch, Stift Rein) were also invited to cooperate, with which initial discussions were held.
Under WP 1, all project partners cooperated in particular on the development of the questionnaire for the situation analysis and frequency survey D.1.1.1, the planning of the establishment of a scientific advisory board of the cross-border Schlossstrasse D.1.2.1 (overview of potential advisory board members, contact with potential members, definition of the tasks and objectives of the scientific advisory board) and the planning of the implementation of activity 1.3 ‘Positioning the cross-border Schlossstrasse as a cultural route of European importance’ (research and discussion on the common main topic of the new cultural route, research on existing cultural routes – topics, structure, administration, etc.). The partners also jointly planned the participation of project representatives in the Council of Europe’s Annual Conference on Cultural Routes in Visegrád (Hungary) in September 2024. As part of activity 1.4 “Joint knowledge and skills for regional actors”, the project partners jointly planned the development of the training programme “Castle Road Ambassador” (research of various possible forms of training, discussion on the content and structure of the training and how to implement it). In the first reporting period, the first networking event for castle managers and cooperation partners D.1.4.4 was implemented as part of AP 1, which was organized by the PP5 TSOM on 11.6.2024 in Bad Radkersburg. All PP were involved in the organisation and implementation of the event. The event in Bad Radkersburg was the first cross-border meeting of Slovenian and Austrian castles as part of the follow-up project Castle Road 2.0. At the event, the content of the follow-up project Castel Road 2.0 was presented in detail. The event also included a presentation on the impact of climate change on tourism and tourism's resilience to climate change, including a survey of the event's participants.
Within the framework of AP 2, the project partners mainly worked on the planning and implementation of the start-up activities for the development of the scrapbook D.2.2.2 and pilot development of the castle road product D.2.4.1. For example, LP1 RIS prepared a presentation on the development of board games (key factors that influence the development and/or production of a board game) as part of the control group meeting on 28.5.2024 at Schloss Kornberg in cooperation with an expert for the development of board games. As part of the above-mentioned control group meeting, the project partners also looked at various forms of collector's albums for stickers.
As part of AP 3, a press conference D.3.3.3 took place, which was organized by PP5 TSOM as part of the networking event for lock operators and cooperation partners D.1.4.4 on 11.6.2024 in Bad Radkersburg. The press conference was attended by representatives of all project partners. During the tax group meetings, the project partners also discussed the implementation of the advertising campaign and various promotional materials (capitalisation of promotional materials from the previous Castle Road project – Castle Road flag, Castle Road map and new promotional material – billboards for castles, beach flags, etc.).
In the second reporting period, the project partners built on the start-up activities and the project basis built up in the first reporting period.
In the second reporting period, the LP1 RIS continued to perform its tasks as lead partner, such as coordinating the content, leading and monitoring the time and financial plan of the project, coordinating the internal project communication, informing the public and promoting the project and the project activities, steering the project partners with regard to the program requirements and ensuring their consistent compliance.
In the second reporting period, 7 tax group meetings were implemented, 6 of them online (24.7.2024, 6.9.2024, 21.11.2024, 26.11.2024, 4.12.2024, 16.12.2024) and 1 suburb in Rakičan Castle (300.9.2024). The tax group meetings served to plan the implementation of the project activities, the ongoing review of the work done or the monitoring of the implementation of the project activities and services, but above all also the drafting of strategic decisions. The latter were mainly related to the liquidity and organisational problems faced by LP1 RIS in the second reporting period. The resulting situation required more frequent meetings of the tax group, as well as regular coordination with the Joint Secretariat, the Managing Authority, the Municipality of Murska Sobota, which is the founder of the public body RIS Dvorec Rakičan, and others. During the second reporting period, all partners were in regular contact with the representatives of the castles in their region, who informed them about project activities and upcoming project events, whether by e-mail, telephone or in the context of meetings.
Under WP 1, all project partners worked together on the following activities:
- Implementation of analysis and frequency collection D.1.1.1 (collection of questionnaires – all project partners, data entry and analysis – WAB),
- Implementation of activity 1.2 Exploring the common cross-border history and creating a common scientific basis (D.1.2.1: Establishment of a science committee of the cross-border Schlossstraße - establishment of the advisory board, implementation of 3 meetings of the scientific advisory board on 2.7., 2.9. and 11.11.2024; D.1.2.1: Implementation of technical conferences – content and timing of the implementation of 3 conferences),
- Planning the implementation of the activity 1.3 Positioning the cross-border Schlossstraße as a cultural route of European importance (in-depth analysis and discussion on the common overarching theme of the new cultural route; Participation of PP5 TSOM in the annual Conference of Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe in September 2024 in Visegrad, Hungary, etc.).
Within the framework of WP 2, the project partners focused on the implementation of start-up activities for the development of the scrapbook D.1.2.1 (overview of the situation on the market, discussion of possible forms of implementation) and the development of the lock road product D.2.4.1 (overview of the situation on the market, discussion of possible forms of implementation)
Within the framework of WP 3, the project partners began the implementation of start-up activities of activity 3.1 Virtual AI-supported service centre (verification and analysis of the existing website of the cross-border Schlossstraße, implementation of an online meeting on 9.10.2024 on the topic of the new virtual service centre) and start-up activities for the development and planning of advertising activities and promotional materials D.3.3.2. As part of activity 3.3 Establishment of a strong international brand, PP3 WAB organised a press conference D.3.3.3 in the second reporting period, namely on 3.9.2024 at Schloss Güssing, with the aim of promoting the project and the project activities.
With the Castle Road 2.0 project, the project partners aim to position the cross-border Castle Road as the Council of Europe Cultural Route (A 1.3), following the recommendation of ICOMOS – Charter of the International Association for the Preservation and Conservation of Monuments, on which the concept of Cultural Routes is based. In order to achieve the target set, a number of important activities were carried out in the 3rd reporting period. The group of the Scientific Advisory Board (D.1.2.1), which had already been initiated in the second reporting period, met at Schloss Kornberg on 27.5.2025. In addition, the 1st of 3 specialist conferences (D.1.2.2) took place on 4.4.2025 in Murska Sobota Castle. At the conference, experts from Slovenia and Austria presented contributions on the paths of castle research, the role of castle research for museums and tourism and, together with the conference participants, examined the prerequisites for positioning the Schlossstrasse as a cultural route of the Council of Europe. An important activity in the development of a common scientific basis of the Schlösserstrasse (A 1.2) and its positioning as a cultural route (A.1.3) is also learning from best practice examples. In the third reporting period, as recommended by the EICR (European Institute for Cultural Routes), the best practice example of the certified Via Habsburg cultural route was visited during a study visit (D.1.3.2).
In the third reporting period, the project partners continued to carry out activities to implement the situation analysis (D.1.1.1). In the first reporting period, a questionnaire was developed for carrying out the analysis, which was sent to all 39 partner locks in the second reporting period. In the third reporting period, the project partners collected all completed questionnaires. Among other things, the questionnaire collects data on visitor management and examines the needs of castle owners and managers for support and further training. Based on the first results of the situation analysis, the first topics were identified in the 3rd reporting period, which will be integrated into the development of the Castle Road Experts training programme (D.1.4.1 and D.1.4.2) for castle owners and managers. In addition, an external expert has been selected who will develop the training programme and who has already submitted a first draft of the training concept to the project partners. The cooperation partners, who act as important promoters and multipliers of the Schlossstrase offer, also play an important role in the Schlossstrasse network. For this purpose, the Castle Road Ambassador training programme (D.1.4.1 and D.1.4.3) is being developed for them, in which they receive information about the Schlossstrasse and its offer. In the 3rd reporting period, an external expert was selected who will develop the training program and who has already prepared a first concept draft of the training program.
The Castle Road 2.0 project also aims at a more sustainable visitor management and a better seasonal (A 2.1) and local (A 2.2 and A 2.3) distribution of visitors along the Schlossstrasse. Various pilot measures aim to direct visitors to less-visited castles and from the castles to the region, and to promote a more even distribution of visitors on a seasonal basis. In the third reporting period, the project partners focused on the detailed planning of activities for the development of a joint scrapbook (D.2.2.1) and the development of a joint product of the Schlösserstrasse (D.2.4.1). In the third reporting period, the project partners also started planning activities under the model for a better seasonal distribution of visitors (A 2.1), which includes the development and testing of new annual priorities (D.2.1.1). Based on the situation analysis D.1.1.1, the PP tend to develop new seasonal events and offers (D.2.1.1) for the Advent season, as the castles have fewer visitors at that time.
With the Castle Road 2.0 project, the Schlösserstrasse wants to meet the requirements and needs of modern society with its offers and services. Therefore, the focus is also on intelligent information management. In the third reporting period, the project partners continued the implementation of the start-up activities for the development of an AI-based virtual information centre (A 3.1).
In the 3rd reporting period, the project partners met in the framework of 6 tax group meetings, which play a key role in the joint planning of the implementation of the project activities, the monitoring of the time and financial plan of the project and the drafting of strategic decisions.
In the third reporting period, the project partners were in regular contact with all 39 partner locks as well as with media representatives.

- izvedbi analize stanja in raziskave frekvence obiskanosti D.1.1.1 (zbiranje vprašalnikov – vsi projektni partnerji, vnos in analiza podatkov – WAB)
- izvedbi aktivnosti 1.2 Raziskava skupne čezmejne zgodovine in oblikovanje skupne znanstvene podlage (D.1.2.1: Vzpostavitev znanstvenega odbora čezmejne Ceste gradov – vzpostavitev odbora, izvedba treh sestankov znanstvenega odbora 2.7., 2.9. in 11.11.2024; D.1.2.2: Izvedba strokovnih konferenc – načrtovanje vsebinske in časovne izvedbe treh strokovnih konferenc),
V sklopu DP 3 so projektni partnerji začeli z izvajanjem začetnih aktivnosti v sklopu 3.1 Z umetno inteligenco podprto virtualno informacijsko središče (pregled in analiza obstoječe spletne strani čezmejne Ceste gradov, izvedba sestanka 9.10.2024 na temo novega virtualnega informacijskega središča) in začetnih aktivnosti za razvoj in načrtovanje promocijskih aktivnosti in promocijskega materiala D.3.3.2. V sklopu dejavnosti 3.3 Vzpostavitev močne mednarodne blagovne znamke je PP3 WAB v 2. obdobju poročanja izvedel tiskovno konferenco D.3.3.3, in sicer 3.9.2024 na gradu Güssing z namenom promocije projekta in projektnih aktivnosti.
Zato bo za slednje razvit program usposabljanja Castle Road Ambassador (D.1.4.1 in D.1.4.3), v okviru katerega bodo pridobili informacije o Cesti gradov in njeni ponudbi.
S projektom Castle Road 2.0 želi Cesta gradov ostati v koraku s časom ter s svojimi ponudbami in storitvami zadostiti zahtevam in potrebam sodobne družbe. V 3. obdobju poročanja so projektni partnerji nadaljevali z izvajanjem začetnih aktivnosti za razvoj z umetno inteligenco podprtega virtualnega informacijskega središča (A 3.1).
