SuS_AGRI aims to capitalise the methodology developed by the REBOUND project "Fostering Resilience in Rural Communities" funded by the ERASMUS+ Priority Theme programme transferring it in the territories of South Adriatic. REBOUND project was identified as flagship project in the frame of actions for resilient rural areas by the European Rural Vision. The South Adriatic area is characterized by favourable natural conditions for the development of agriculture productions. However, in the last years this area is also exposed to drought, floods, frost, strong winds and rising salinity level of agricultural lands. Due to climate change effects, water scarcity, change in precipitation regime, bacteria and rising temperature have been identified as major climate risk factors across the agriculture sector of the South Adriatic area. SuS_AGRI aims to identify a mitigation actions to the main regional risks, evaluating their impacts on programme area. In detail, SuS_AGRI aims to strengthen the base knowledge of farm producers in the South Adriatic area on agricultural practices to mitigate the effects of global warming. PPs will organize a workshop to analyze the needs of rural communities across programme area to determine what is required to improve their resilience. On the basis of this preliminary analysis, project partners will implement a training course of 30 hours to be held in each country, involving 20 farm producers with particular importance to young people and women. The developed training will be insert in a joint action plan for improving rural resilience that will be adopted by partners and the main stakeholders, through the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding. A final conference will be organize to engage with multiple actors in transferring project learnings and the action plan into practice and to improve awareness about climate change effects on agricultural sector, promoting innovative nature-based solutions for resilient agriculture.

Actual Achievements (EN):

Across the South Adriatic, farmers are facing an increasingly difficult challenge: how to preserve agricultural productivity while coping with the intensifying effects of climate change. Droughts, floods, soil degradation, and bacteria outbreaks threaten both livelihoods and landscapes. The SuS_AGRI project was born from this shared challenge, a collaboration between Italy, Albania, and Montenegro aimed at finding practical, science-based solutions to make agriculture more sustainable and resilient. The project focused on a specific problem: the lack of coordinated knowledge and training on innovative methods to mitigate climate impacts in small and medium-sized farms. To address this, SuS_AGRI developed and tested a Joint Training Model, creating a shared framework that integrates risk assessment, capacity building, and cross-border cooperation. Through workshops, field demonstrations, and training, partners turned theoretical approaches into hands-on learning experiences for farmers and local institutions. Cooperation proved to be the project’s greatest strength. Each partner contributed its expertise — Albania focusing on drought management, Montenegro on flood risk reduction, and Italy on sustainable olive cultivation and water efficiency. By working together, they transformed fragmented national efforts into a coordinated regional model, demonstrating the real value of Interreg and IPA collaboration. Over 60 farmers, and 5.600 people were reached through trainings, workshops, including farmers, SMEs, researchers, and policy-makers. These exchanges fostered a new culture of collaboration, especially empowering young and female farmers to lead innovation in rural areas. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding among all partners ensured that this cooperation will continue beyond the project’s lifetime. The Joint Training Model, capitalizing on the REBOUND project methodology, now serves as a transferable model for other territories facing similar challenges, directly contributing to the EUSAIR Pillar 1 – Blue Growth and Pillar 3 – Environmental Quality (high level of contribution). SuS_AGRI has shown that sustainable agriculture is not only about techniques but about people learning together. The spirit of cooperation it built among South Adriatic communities is the true seed of change, one that will keep growing through shared knowledge, resilient farming, and a lasting commitment to the land.

REBOUND project (EN) | REBOUND project "Fostering Resilience in Rural Communities" financed by ERASMUS+ that identified four phases, a first phase of analysis, a second phase of training, and the definition of a joint model of training to make the agricultural productive sector resilient and its rural communities. On the basis of this methodology, the partners will implement workshops to analyze the impact of Climate Change on agricultural, inviting the referens of REBOUND Project, will organize training courses on sustainable practictes, and will jointly develop a model of a usable training programme for improving rural resilience and for farmers, that will takes into account good practices and sustainable techniques. Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion The identification of sustainable practices for the climate change mitigation practices in agriculture of the SuS_AGRI proposal, will contribute to the Pillar 3 "ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY", in detail to the flagship "PROTECTION AND ENHANCEMENT OF NATURAL TERRESTRIAL HABITATS AND ECOSYSTEMS". Moreover, in the document "EUSAIR Action Plan Revision: 2022 Public Consultation Report" there is a specific concrete suggestion that is "Adding a Pillar or topic on agriculture and/or agro-ecology (present under Pillar 3) and sustainable rural development based on “farm-to-fork” strategy should become more important", for this SuS_AGRI will contribute to the environmental protection of the territories considering the impacts of the agriculture on it.
Other EU Rural Vision
To ensure that rural areas can continue to play these essential roles, a European Commission communication sets out a long-term vision for the EU’s rural areas up to 2040. It identifies areas of action towards stronger, connected, resilient and prosperous rural areas and communities. A Rural Pact and an EU Rural Action Plan with tangible flagships and new tools will help achieve the goals of this vision. In detail SuS_AGRI will contribute to the actions identified for the resilience of rural areas and in detail with the flagship project REBOUND. The aim of REBOUND is to improve the resilience of rural communities, by analysing their needs and developing training programmes.
Other Agenda 2030
SuS_AGRI will contribute to the following Sustainable Goals identified by the Agenda 2030:
- Goal 2: Zero Hunger. The food and agriculture sector offers key solutions for development, and is central for hunger and poverty eradication. In detail with the specific indicator 2.3 that foresee by 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers.
- Goal 13: Climate Action. Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone, everywhere;
- Goal 15: Life on Land - Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss;
- Goal 17: Partnerships - Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
Other EU Green Deal
SuS_AGRI proposal will contribute to the European Green Deal, in particular to the EU Strategy from farm to fork, that aims to accelerate our transition to a sustainable food system that should:
- have a neutral or positive environmental impact
- help to mitigate climate change and adapt to its impacts
- reverse the loss of biodiversity
- ensure food security, nutrition and public health, making sure that everyone has access to sufficient, safe, nutritious, sustainable food
- preserve affordability of food while generating fairer economic returns, fostering competitiveness of the EU supply sector and promoting fair trade.
These topics will be addresses in the training activities and workshops of the SuS_AGRI proposal.
