Le projet vise à rendre plus écologique la logistique pour l'approvisionnement alimentaire et la gestion des biodéchets, des emballages et des conteneurs usagés dans les villes méditerranéennes, afin de réduire leur impact sur les citoyens et le système climatique mondial. Pour ce faire, 6 démonstrateurs pilotes seront mis en place en Espagne, en France, en Italie, en Grèce et en Bulgarie, qui serviront de support aux expérimentations pour la transition écologique. Un travail de modélisation et de dimensionnement d'infrastructures adaptées, basées sur les énergies renouvelables (ex : bornes de recharge avec panneaux photovoltaïques) et sur les biocarburants doit permettre de montrer la faisabilité de solutions alternatives décarbonées. Par ailleurs, afin d'envisager la transition dans une approche à long terme, le consortium abordera les questions économiques, organisationnelles et technologiques liées à l'impératif de la transition énergétique. A travers une concertation multi-acteurs dans une démarche de living lab au sein des démonstrateurs sur les territoires pilotes, le consortium identifiera des leviers pour rendre viable et sécuriser l'ensemble de la chaîne d'approvisionnement du producteur au consommateur en connectant efficacement les différents opérateurs impliqués. Les résultats de ces expérimentations démontreront la possibilité de formuler des recommandations à l'attention des décideurs pour transformer la ville (aménagement urbain, mise à disposition d'infrastructures...), afin de faire face aux défis de demain. Le consortium du projet comprend 10 partenaires bénéficiaires et 9 partenaires associés, publics ou privés, compétents en matière de logistique dans les systèmes alimentaires territoriaux, de conception de solutions logistiques décarbonées et d'accompagnement à l'élaboration de politiques publiques de transition énergétique.

Description (EN):

The project aims to make more ecological logistics for food supply and the management of bio-waste, packaging, and used containers in Mediterranean cities, in order to reduce their impact on citizens and the global climate system. To do this, 6 pilot demonstrators will be set up in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria, which will support experiments for the ecological transition. Modeling and sizing work on suitable infrastructures, based on renewable energy (eg: charging stations with photovoltaic panels) and bio-fuels should make it possible to showcase the feasibility of carbon-free alternative solutions. In addition, to consider the transition in a long-term approach, the consortium will address the economic, organizational, and technological issues associated with the imperative of energy transition. Through a multi-actor consultation in a living lab approach within the demonstrators on the pilot territories, the consortium will identify levers to make viable and secure the entire supply chain from producer to consumer by effectively connecting the different operators involved. The results of these experiments will demonstrate the possibility to formulate recommendations for decision-makers to transform the city (urban development, provision of infrastructures) in order to face the challenges of tomorrow. The project consortium includes 10 beneficiary partners and 9 associated partners, public or private, skilled in logistics in territorial food systems, design of carbon-free logistics solutions, and support for public energy transition policies.

Actual Achievements (EN):

The GARDEN project has made substantial progress in its first reporting period, focusing on cross-border collaboration and the achievement of strategic objectives. The project successfully established a solid administrative foundation, including the coordination of pre-contracting, signing of essential agreements, and setting up procedures to ensure smooth reporting and management across all partners. One of the key achievements was the development of the project’s communication strategy and the creation of promotional materials, including posters, roll-ups, and a dedicated website. This work has been essential in promoting the project's goals and ensuring clear communication with stakeholders. The nearly completed online participatory tool, based on the YesWiki methodology, will further enhance the project’s transparency and engagement with the public. On the technical side, significant progress was made in the preparation of the state-of-the-art report, a key deliverable that synthesizes knowledge on food chain logistics, mobility solutions, and public policies. This report will serve as a foundation for the project's experiments and further activities, particularly in supporting the energy transition of food supply chains. The dynamic mapping of pilot sites, incorporating territorial context and logistical challenges, has also been initiated, providing essential data for monitoring and evaluation. The collaboration between partners has been instrumental in advancing the project. Transnational meetings, including the kick-off and steering committee sessions, facilitated knowledge exchange, strategic discussions, and mutual learning. These gatherings helped shape the direction of the project, aligning activities with shared goals. Pilot site visits, such as those in Spain and Montenegro, offered valuable insights into local contexts and contributed to refining project methodologies. Environmental sustainability has been a key focus, with considerable progress made in monitoring the project’s carbon footprint. This includes gathering data on emissions related to travel, accommodation, and project activities, which will be critical for evaluating the project's environmental impact. Additionally, the creation of a common database for monitoring key indicators has been initiated, ensuring that the results of the project can be measured and analyzed effectively. This will enable the project to track its contributions toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing sustainable practices within the food logistics sector. The foundation for testing and implementing pilot solutions has also been laid, with important steps taken in the development of methodologies for logistics innovations and mobility technologies, including electric and biofuel solutions. These pilot activities, set to be implemented in upcoming phases, are designed to address the logistical challenges identified during the first period. The groundwork established during this period positions the GARDEN project for successful implementation, ensuring it can deliver tangible outcomes that contribute to both local sustainability efforts and broader European goals for energy transition and environmental resilience. Over the course of the first two reporting periods, the GARDEN project has made substantial progress towards its objectives, establishing a strong foundation for fostering the energy transition in food logistics systems across the Mediterranean area. Significant achievements have been recorded across all work packages, reflecting the commitment and effective collaboration of the project partners. The consortium successfully developed a comprehensive transnational report (Deliverable D1.1.1) addressing the main challenges in food supply chain logistics, sustainable mobility alternatives (e.g., electromobility and biofuels), and the relevant legislative and policy frameworks at national and EU levels. This work was supported by detailed national inputs, case studies, and good practices, and was accompanied by a synthesis of strategic lessons (D1.2.1) to guide the implementation of pilot actions. Several innovative methods were designed to support the implementation and evaluation of pilot activities, including a relevancy matrix aligning research findings with local pilot needs and an evaluation grid for assessing sustainability impacts. These tools ensure both the coherence of interventions across sites and their alignment with environmental, operational, and socio-economic objectives. All pilot sites have been defined and mapped in detail, taking into account territorial contexts, governance models, and stakeholder ecosystems. Extensive consultation processes have been conducted in each region, and contextual studies have been completed or are in progress. Several partners have begun drafting specifications for public tenders and investment planning, thereby progressing towards the operational phase of pilot implementation. Capenergies launched WP3 and provided coordination support to partners responsible for pilot sites. A retro-planning template, feasibility studies (e.g., for Marseille), and preliminary interviews with each partner were conducted to assess pilot status, identify potential barriers, and ensure tailored support. Partners such as CRIB, BATTI, and UNIVPM began working on technical specifications for local energy transition initiatives, with some pilots (e.g., Marseille, Heraklion) advancing in the design and call-for-interest phases. A comprehensive communication strategy has been developed and executed, encompassing a visual identity, promotional materials, social media campaigns (e.g. #ThinkBeyondYourGARDEN), a project newsletter, and a dedicated project website. Participatory tool (YesWiki) was launched, with content contributions from multiple partners. These efforts have significantly contributed to increasing the visibility of the project and engaging a broad range of stakeholders at local, national, and transnational levels. Stakeholder engagement was supported by tools such as stakeholder databases and pilot ID cards (e.g., for Heraklion, Dolni Chiflik), as well as active communication on institutional channels and project-related platforms. Project partners designed the capitalization strategy and prepared the structure for future outputs. Environmental monitoring also progressed, with several partners collecting travel and event-related data in line with Interreg Euro-MED carbon footprint guidelines. Knowledge exchange activities, such as participation in Green Living Area events and other EU project events, further supported cross-project learning. The project in its first implementation year has demonstrated the strength and effectiveness of transnational cooperation. Partners from different countries have contributed complementary expertise—ranging from academic research, local governance, and communication to technical support and stakeholder engagement. Joint development of tools, shared methodologies, and active peer exchange have enabled a harmonised yet context-sensitive approach to preparing the pilot actions. The participatory and collaborative dynamics underpinning the project have reinforced mutual learning, built trust among partners, and created the basis for achieving long-term impact through well-informed, locally adapted energy transition initiatives in food logistics systems

The main objective was to develop an innovative pentahelix based method and use this to engage and support authorities on multiple levels together with other key stakeholders in different sectors for increased SECAP development and implementation. PentaHelix stands for integrated development and focuses on five different stakeholder groups:

Pentahelix project developed the innovative PentaHelix method and demonstrate it in 5 partner countries, with 1-2 pilot municipalities in each region (8 in total).
PentaHelix task forces were used in the implementation of a total of at least 30 actions detailed in local SE(C)Aps (an average of at least 5 actions in each region). This will lead to direct energy savings of estimated 1200 GWh/year, and increased renewable energy production of estimated 700 GWh/year, and prepare the ground for investments in the order of 800m€. Besides, on the web platform are displayed information and results for one pilot plant, which is beneficial for further analysis and enhancement of such systems. To extend the knowledge obtained during the project activities and bring the project results and achievements to the even broader public, SEADRION+ focused on dissemination and promotional actions about the possibilities of deploying seawater heat pump systems. Lessons learned by the UNIZAG FSB team in coordinating such a project with pilot installations will be used as well in coordinating the GARDEN project. (FR), Interreg ADRION Project SEADRION was a great success, with the main results being the installation of three seawater heat pumps used for various applications and the development of a web platform that offers a valuable tool for networking and exchange of knowledge for interested parties. Besides, on the web platform are displayed information and results for one pilot plant, which is beneficial for further analysis and enhancement of such systems. To extend the knowledge obtained during the project activities and bring the project results and achievements to the even broader public, SEADRION+ focused on dissemination and promotional actions about the possibilities of deploying seawater heat pump systems. Lessons learned by the UNIZAG FSB team in coordinating such a project with pilot installations will be used as well in coordinating the GARDEN project. Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

EuropeanGreenDeal The Green Deal is the EU’s main growth strategy to transition the EU economy to a sustainable economic model. Presented in December 2019, the overarching objective of the EU Green Deal is for the EU to become the first climate neutral continent by 2050, resulting in a cleaner environment, more affordable energy, smarter transport, new jobs and an overall better quality of life.
The project will contribute to several objectives of the Green Deal:
- Climate action and Clean Energy: by deploying low-carbon solutions of transport (e-mobility with zero emission under exploitation, and biofuel/biogas as neutral emissions) within pilots to prepare a large-scale adoption of those solutions, especially in the sector of agro-food logistics. Biogas is carbon-neutral, and biofuels are a sustainable form of energy derived from the harvesting and processing of biomass, with a net-zero carbon impact on the environment. Furthermore it greatly reduces emissions of greenhouse gases such as sulfur, methane and ozone.
- Sustainable industry and sustainable mobility : by promoting circular economy using biofuels and/or biogas from local production, and retrofit of vehicles for the transport of goods, and by preparing the large-scale deployment of retrofit solutions to support the e-mobility sector that could not only rely on new mobility for several reasons: the risk of depletion of natural resources, the availability of manufacturers to meet the demand
- Research and development: by testing retrofit solutions that are very close-to-market (TRL 8-9) to help early adoption of clean technologies in the agri-food logistics sector.
- Job creation : by promoting retrofit activity of vehicles, which could consolidate jobs that cannot be relocated. Indeed, the gradual electrification of the vehicle fleet will naturally decrease the repair and maintenance activities. In this sense the retrofit could allow the sector to renew itself and retain as many local jobs as possible.
EuropeanGreenDeal The Farm to fork strategy is at the heart of the European Green Deal project, which aims to make our food systems fair, healthy and environmentally friendly, but also to ensure food supply and security for people in the face of crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This implies supporting the transition of our food systems towards greater sustainability (neutral or positive impact on the environment, mitigation of/adaptation to climate change, reversal of the biodiversity erosion curve, food resilience, access to quality food for all, fair remuneration of producers), while offering new opportunities to value chain operators. To enable and accelerate this transition, advisory services, financial instruments and research and innovation are essential as they can help overcome tensions, develop and test solutions, overcome barriers and develop new market opportunities.
Our project will contribute to the objectives of the Farm to fork strategy in several ways. Firstly, it aims to reduce CO2 emissions and air pollutants linked to the transport of food products to consumers (one of the key elements to be taken into account in the life cycle analysis of products from short and local food chains), through the testing of low-carbon technologies. Secondly, it aims to strengthen the food resilience of cities by consolidating the economic, organizational and digital models of supply logistics, through participatory approaches of the multi-stakeholder living lab type, including circular economy professionals, who generate reverse flows. Finally, it aims to integrate the recommendations resulting from our experiments into local and regional strategies and policies related to the energy transition, mobility and food.
EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion Macroregional strategies, one of which is EUSAIR, enable various parts of Europe to harmonize economic development, as one of the main long-term goals of the EU. EUSAIR has four thematic areas, namely: Sustainable Tourism, Environmental Quality, Connecting the Region and Blue Growth. GARDEN project will contribute to the EUSAIR most significantly in the Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Quality thematic areas, as it stimulates sustainable economic development and creation of new business opportunities and new jobs in the area of food supply logistics. Through the Living Labs activities, the project significantly contributes to the development of human resources in the areas where the Labs are to be held. The aforementioned project activities directly contributed to the improvement of the business environment and strengthening of the competitiveness of the food supply logistics.
