- HERIT-DATA, 2018-2022 (Interreg MED Programme 2014-2020)
- HERIT-DATA project aimed at reducing the impact of tourism activities on cultural heritage, by taking advantage of technology and data exploitation. The project focused especially on old towns and sites of particular archaeological and cultural interest, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites. HERIT-DATA partners developed, tested and transferred a series of tools to collect, generate, integrate, analyze information and transform it into behavior changes and improvement of decision-making processes run by public administration & tourism or heritage managing bodies. - WARMEST has as a strategic goal to create a novel comprehensive Decision Support System that will carry out a Cultural Heritage Risk Analsys (CHRA) and suggest improvements in maintenance and disaster management procedures for cultural and natural heritage sites. To this end the project has engaged into utilisation of highly innovative state of the art technologies including photogrammetry for 3D modelling of cultural heritage monuments and has developed Artificial Intelligence algorithms so as to detect defects on Cultural Heritage monuments out of their saliency features. Expert knowledge of archeologists or restoration units can be integrated as the produced tool allows annotation of Cultural Heritage 3D models identifying type of defect and allowing more efficient training

- ALTER ECO aimed to enhance the local sustainable development of tourism by promoting Mediterranean Identity through the implementation of alternative tourist strategies in 6 pilots, co-designed and implemented by public and private stakeholders. The project provided the opportunity of testing, in representative MED cities, used as LIVING LAB, existing methodologies and tools arisen in previous high impact projects in the field of sustainable tourism or proposed by key stakeholders, with the aim of reaching holistic and realistic tourist strategies at local and regional level that allow transferability in the MED territory. Project results aimed to support policy makers to make more informed and integrated decisions for the governance and management of tourism in the Mediterranean and at the same time enhance the coordination of actions between public and private stakeholders towards the implementation of the raised strategies in order to create new business opportunities. ALTER ECO contributed in improving knowledge and decision making capacities, including a better use of observation, monitoring and planning in the field of sustainable tourism. In particular, it will capitalize on the findings and Living Labs established in the Municipality of Genoa and the city of Dubrovnik. Both Genoa and Dubrovnik rolled out the project activities with the active participation of local stakeholders that will be invited to participate in HERIT ADAPT as well.
- The ‘Genoa City Pass’ tool, the official tourist pass to discover Genoa will be exploited. This tool can be topped up more times for free, without limits, to give a maximum saving and according to the interests of the tourist. It includes free public transport tickets to move in the city and free entrance to the main museums of the city.
- For the case of Dubrovnik, the Dubrovnik Visitor system 2018 - a visitor counter in the Old City, that manages tourism flows will be deployed and enhanced for suggesting routes for extreme heat events and to manage covid-19 or other crises related situations that demand the detouring of tourists. (EN), TransCPEarlyWarning - Establishment of TRANSnational Civil Protection EARLY WARNING System to improve the resilience of Adrion territories to natural and man-made risks, 2020-2022 (Interreg ADRION)
- The project addresses the challenges of enhancing the level of uniformity, homogeneity and similarity of existing CP Early Warning, efficiently integrating them to predict risks, present alert levels and improve exchange of information with EU CP Mechanism. This approach is built on 3 pillars:
- Participatory process with the establishment of a networking structure as a stable cooperation relationship between project partners, CP organizations and main stakeholders with a long term perspective.
- It relates to its activation to change from traditional "vulnerable element" to "active sensor" of emergencies to obtain their contribution to CP emergency activities. Innovative Transnational network relates to the development of an innovative Warning System, a web platform able to integrate heterogeneous data. Establishment of a strategy and drafting of an Action Plan providing a common vision enhancing level of uniformity and similarity to make available to National/Regional Authorities a transnational uniform emergency basis. The overall objective is to increase cooperation level among National CP right from the early warning stage and better ensuring EU CP Mechanism intervention through an innovative and holistic networking approach with a lever effect also after project end, supporting the whole system of CP; keep open a real-time update channel on risk occurrences by collecting and using information provided; implement a Raising Awareness intervention of emergencies.
- Expected change is the promotion of homogenization among early warning legislation and processes, reinforcement of coordination and cooperation of ADRION CP chains of command, and convergence of IPA CP operation to EU CP standards by transfer of experiences and lessons learnt. - The “Initiative was endorsed by the UN General Secretary in 2019 and adopted by over 100 UN members that face important challenges in regards to heritage due to climate change.
- A Network of National Focal Points has been established within the states that support the initiative. The Focal Points are usually the staff in charge of Heritage, Tourism and Climate matters within the Ministries of Environment, Climate Change, Cultural Heritage and Civil Protection (depending on the governments’ structure). The vast majority of (South and North) Mediterranean countries are members of the Initiative.
- The Initiative is implemented by the Hellenic Republic in collaboration with UNESCO, UNFCCC and WMO, while EPLO belongs to the Technical Secretariat.
- Relevant milestones realised until today:
- - Global catalog of good practices of adaptation and mitigation of climate impacts on Natural and Cultural Heritage
