- HERIT-DATA - Sustainable Heritage Management towards Mass Tourism Impact thanks to a holistic use of Big and Open Data / 2014 - 2020 INTERREG VB Mediterranean/ https://herit-data.interreg-med.eu
- TOURISMO Project Partners: UNIFI, FRI, FV, FSMLR
- TOURISMO Associated Organisation: Tuscany Region (LP of HERIT-DATA)
- The main objective of the HERIT-DATA project was to promote sustainable, responsible management of historical and cultural heritage tourism in the cities located in the MED regions. Its main challenge was to reduce the impact of mass tourism on cultural heritage, focusing on two destinations: historical centers & special heritage or archaeological interest sites, including sites declared as World Heritage Sites. To achieve this, the project developed a platform (https://herit-data.interreg-med.eu/what-we-achieve/results/), capitalizing on the Snap4City FIWARE platform (https://www.snap4city.org/) to integrate data into an artificial intelligence tool that supported decision-making processes, including Identification, collection & harmonization of data (big/open/smart), Analysis and production of smart data that will provide information on tourist behaviour, seasonality, trends, etc., Measurement of sustainability indicators in order to measure the effect of mass tourism on cultural heritage, the project involved the specification of a set of indicators at different levels & based on different parameters. This aimed to capture information on congestion in the areas with the most popular tourist attractions, the tourist experience in the city, safety, and the impact on historic buildings. Six pilot sites have been chosen to implement the HERIT-DATA platform: Dubrovnik (Croatia), Pont du Gard (Région Occitanie, France), Ancient Olympia (Western Greece), Florence (Tuscany Region, Italy), Valencia (Valencia Region, Spain) and Mostar (Bosnia-Herzegovina).

Existing data and collected data in the pilot locations will be analyzed in the HERIT-DATA platform to support the orientation of tourism flows. The HERIT-DATA platform will be updated in the initial stages of TOURISMO, and adjusted for the new locations and indicators. The digital twins of the pilot areas will also be developed.
- The List of HERIT-DATA Indicators is the end HERIT-DATA output to be exploited by TOURISMO for the evaluation of the impact of tourism in the pilot locations of the project. In particular, the list of HERIT-DATA sustainable indicators will be revised and enriched according to TOURISMO pilot needs to allow new data collection that can be useful & exploited by SMEs and other stakeholders, like tourists themselves.
- The mainstreaming model of HERIT-DATA will also be the basis for communicating and transferring TOURISMO pilot results to the target groups of the project. Access to the established HERIT-DATA network of stakeholders will also be pursued with the support of UNIFI, FRI, FV and FSMLR (Partners of HERIT-DATA), for TOURISMO dissemination and transferring purposes.

- (EN), ALTER ECO PLUS - Alternative tourist strategies to enhance the local sustainable development of tourism by promoting Mediterranean Identity / 2014 - 2020 INTERREG VB Mediterranean / https://alter-eco.interreg-med.eu/
- TOURISMO Project Partners: READ SA
- ALTER ECO PLUS objective was to facilitate the integration of tools aiming at balancing the effects of tourism development by taking into account carrying capacity issues and expanding the focus of tourism development beyond the local destination level. ALTER ECO enhanced the local sustainable development of tourism by promoting Mediterranean Identity through the implementation of alternative tourist strategies in 6 pilots co-designed and implemented by public and private stakeholders. The project provided the opportunity of testing, in representative MED cities, used as LIVING LAB, existing methodologies and tools arisen in previous high-impact projects in the field of sustainable tourism or proposed by key stakeholders, with the aim of reaching holistic and realistic tourist strategies at the local and regional level that allow transferability in the MED territory. Project results supported policy makers in making more informed and integrated decisions for the governance and management of tourism in the Mediterranean and at the same time enhanced the coordination of actions between public and private stakeholders toward the implementation of the raised strategies in order to create new business opportunities. ALTER ECO also contributed to improving knowledge and decision-making capacities, including better use of observation, monitoring, and planning in the field of sustainable tourism.

- (EN) | TOURISMO will build on two solutions of the ALTER ECO PLUS project, the Interregional Learning Portfolio (www.alterecotips.com) and the Online tool to calculate the Tourism Carrying Capacity (TCC) of a destination (https://quantitas.it/dev/med/cc/ro.html). The 38 key study practices collected by ALTER ECO at the Interregional Learning Portfolio, will be reviewed by the partnership with a special focus on the 15 practices which address the problem of concentration of tourists in a hot spot (exceeding carrying capacity)The best practices will support the pilot partners to specify the characteristics of the pilot activity, and will also assist them in making decisions on how to orient tourism flows (short-term and long-term) after analyzing the collected data. In addition, the best practices will be considered for the development of the use case scenarios for project stakeholders.
- With regards to the “Carrying Capacity Limit” calculation tool, developed by ALTER ECO PLUS, TOURISMO pilot partners have already specified the need for the calculation of the carrying capacity of the pilot sites. The tools will fully support the partnership in the day-to-day monitoring of tourism flows during the implementation of the pilot activities, giving valuable insights that will feed the decision-making process for orienting the flows. The tool has already been tested in Rhodes city under ALTER ECO PLUS, and can also be customized for the other TOURISMO pilots.
- Access to the established ALTER ECO PLUS network of stakeholders will also be pursued with the support of the TOURISMO Lead Partner, READ SA (Partners of ALTER ECO PLUS), for TOURISMO dissemination and trandferring purposes.
