Project status: ongoing
Relevant linked projects:
- Interreg 2seas Cool Towns (EN) | Cool Neighbourhoods is a follow-up to the Cool Towns project. This 2Seas project made great progress in modelling heat stress maps for cities and cataloguing various intervention scenarios. However, for the Cool Towns outputs to be successful, extra work is needed to embed their implementation in the local situation, that is to say the neighbourhood-level. Building on the already existing cooling solutions and city-wide maps, Cool Neighbourhoods will go further by integrating interventions in ultra-local participatory processes and liveability strategies. (EN), Interreg 2seas Nature Smart Cities (EN) | In order to help local authorities invest in successful green infrastructure (GI), the NSCiti2s created a business model calculating valuation of GI on economic, social, cultural and environmental grounds. That is to say, not only calculating the costs linked to GI (initial investment, maintenance...) but also all added benefits stemming from ecosystem services. This includes effects on flooding, drought and heat stress. By adopting this approach to urban investment, cities can better plan and justify their greening investments. The University of Antwerp, who developed this business model, will deepen it in a cost-benefit model to include valuations of interventions from the Cool Neighbourhoods intervention catalogue as well as impacts on liveability based on the developed liveability index. (EN), UIA GBG_AS2C (EN) | The Barcelona GBG_AS2C (Blue, Green & Grey_Adapting Schools to Climate Change) project aimed to create climate shelters in eleven pilot schools located in areas of the city most vulnerable to heat island effect and lacking green space. The shelters answer needs revealed in the city plan, which details how heatwaves affect most vulnerable groups and the differential impact of the climate crisis on different citizen groups such as women, low-income groups or refugees. Physical interventions entailed green features (e.g. greenery in schoolyards), blue features (e.g. water-based solutions) and grey (e.g. painting roofs white).
- An important challenge to the project was the skill gap in urban planning to design innovative solutions that answer the urgent challenges of climate change at the local level. GBG_AS2C also highlighted that co-designing with the public proved highly successful in getting urban services to match needs, but it also implies new skills. (EN), UIA OASIS (EN) | The Paris OASIS project aimed at adapting urban spaces to climate change, focusing on health risks caused by heat stress and the potential to improve social cohesion at neighbourhood level. They did so by creating cool islands in ten pilot schoolyards which could be used in times of heat by local communities.
- Multiple participatory approaches have been tested, from co-designing to co-implementing. The learnings on the adaptation of the participatory processes to local neighbourhood needs will be very interesting for Cool Neighbourhoods pilots in the green hub neighbourhood typology to uptake. Indeed, this project demonstrated that even for very similar types of areas, no one solution can fit all when mitigating heat stress. It is key to empower and collaborate with local stakeholders to find the right solutions and create ownership, which will ensure its effectiveness and long-term success. (EN), Interreg NS Cool Cities (EN) | The Cool Cities project was submitted in Call 3 of Interreg North Sea. The focus of the project is to plan itineraries of cool islands for vulnerable people on a city scale. CAPSO and VSO are partners in both projects and will create synergies between both approaches in their pilots. Their Cool Cities pilot will learn from the empowerment and liveability approach from Cool Neighbourhoods, while their Cool Neighbourhoods pilot will ultimately be part of the Saint-Omer cool itinerary. The city of Arnhem, as lead partner of Cool Cities, is also an associated partner of Cool Neighbourhoods. The exchanges on progress and findings will ensure synergies between both projects. (EN), Interreg NWE Green Dense (EN) | The Green Dense project is submitted in the same NWE call as Cool Neighbourhoods. While the Green Dense project focuses on greening mobility connections, interesting links can be made on the interaction with heat stress that their developed plans and solutions entail. The lead partner, the city of Dordrecht, is an associated partner for and will ensure regular exchange with the Cool Neighbourhoods consortium. Common webinars and events will be organised to disseminate cross-cutting knowledge and results. (EN)
