In NWE, Europe's most densely populated region, there are approximately 12,000 children with neurological disorders who face lifelong challenges, including severe mobility limitations. These children require personalised rehabilitation plans that address their specific needs and abilities. However, the lack of standardized practices hinders the development of comprehensive programs that can be easily implemented across various healthcare settings. Despite advancements in medical technology and rehabilitation practices, the current landscape of motor rehabilitation lacks access to advanced technological solutions. The scarcity of advanced technologies, including exoskeletons for children, contributes to the classification of the NWE area as a medical desert. To address these challenges and improve the field of neurological pediatric rehabilitation, the RE:HOME project aims to achieve the following objectives: 1. Improve access to new technologies by delivering new exoskeleton modules for robot-assisted rehabilitation, smart garments, and also an IT platform to telemonitor and facilitate the transfer of digital technologies. 2. Establish standardised transnational training programs for both hospital and home use. Urban areas, Belgium and the Netherlands will serve as pilot countries, where training and testing sessions will be developed. These programs will be adapted and tested in sub-regional areas in Hauts de France and disseminated to private practitioners in Germany for further testing. This functional area cooperation fosters a shift from hospital-centered approach to a more territorial health system. It facilitates the transfer of tools in care services and strengthens territorial care networks. The data collected during these tests will contribute to tailored care, such as device settings and optimized timing of use. 3. Implement a joint training scheme that targets healthcare professionals, parents, children, and the public. This improves access to information and knowledge about rehabilitation technologies and practice. By promoting social inclusion for disabled individuals and develop the local capacity for change, we create a more inclusive and supportive society.

Actual Achievements (EN):

RE:HOME project aims to reduce the healthcare desert in the field of rehabilitation for children with neurological disorders in the NWE region by ensuring improved access to advanced technologies (exoskeleton modules, IT platform) ; developing standardized home training and learning programs with these technologies ; providing comprehensive care for children to rehabilitation centers, children’s homes and to industry, healthcare professionals, in the 4 countries involved. This initial period enabled us to define the organization of the project and set up the structure to monitor the progress of the work, both technically and in terms of communicating and disseminating the results. A WP leader (WP1, Thomas Moore, WP2, SMK; WP3 HS Gesundheit ) and a communication manager (CITC) were chosen. A small management committee meets every two months to review overall progress and prepare the project steering committee, which meets every 6 months. During this first period, we prepared versions 0 (V0) of the various existing exoskeleton modules (A1.1). We have ensured that at least two countries will be involved in the initial V0 tests for each of the modules, which will make it easier to extend the tests to both countries later. The most advanced PAFO, developed by Thomas Moore, module has been tested on children and the preliminary results under control of Ku leuven partner show that users are satisfied and give as well an idea of further improvements( V1). The team is also working on these improvements. Protocols (A2.1) are defined and all documents are signed to to start the pre-pilot testing of the zero generation of the lower limb exoskeleton at the SMK. First testing (A2.2) was prepared but had to be postponed due to a broken actuator of the exoskeleton. For the hip (Ku leuven), the documents intended for the ethics committee (A2.1) of our Belgian partners are currently being drafted. These documents are a prerequisite for testing on children. At the same time, for each of the three modules, improvements are already planned, either in the light of the initial tests carried out or following discussions between developers and clinicians (new sensors, torque measurement, new type of motor control...), enabling greater interaction with users. SMK, As WP2's leader, preparing and organizing biweekly meetings with clinical partners to define user requirements for the home rehabilitation programs for lower and upper limb motor training (A2.1) and to define a frame work for home training exercises and to discuss the smart garment and IT-platform. Every 6 weeks, a meeting is prepared and organized with technical and clinical partners to discuss the user requirements for the smart garment and IT-platform. This way to process prepare future pilot actions and allow to propose standardized protocols. A literature review has been done to have a clear overview of the different practices over the world and to define standard criteria to asset the exercices at home. The architecture of the IT platform has been defined on the basis of the clinical needs expressed (A2.1). During rehabilitation exercises, it will collect data from the home, display it and store it for later analysis. Most of the data should be collected from the existing smart textile suit. The suit (A1.1) will have to be improved by adding movement measurement sensors to monitor exercise in addition to the basic physiological parameters that can already be measured, such as heart rate and temperature. Concerning learning program (A3.1), we conducted literature searches on learning platforms, preparing for the next phase of technical learning schemes and platform implementation Each stage of the project is based on a process of co-construction between the partners. Each partner positions itself according to its skills and shares its knowledge and/or material with the others, enabling rapid progress and, above all, providing elements that are validated by all the participating countries, fully meeting the objective of standardizing healthcare protocols in the NWE zone and, by extension, in Europe as a whole. In terms of communication, the Kickoff took place on 03-04 of June at Thomas Moore. It was an opportunity to consider of the past 6 months and to define the work ahead. The project is present on the WEB at and social networks (https://re-home.nweurope.eu/ ) with more than 200 followers and 1786 printed posts. A press release is ready to be used by each partners. We have already 2 international communications and 2 participations at scientific meetings and workshops. Partners enhanced exoskeleton modules V0(A1.1) for pre-pilot studies (A2.2) on V0, with regular six-week meetings ensuring clinical-technical collaboration. LP upgraded the lower-limb module based on clinician feedback from tests at PP7 (Netherlands). PP2 developed three PAFO prototypes, while PP12 refined the hip module. Efforts in home rehabilitation focused on defining interfaces and components for Version 0 (V0) of the IT platform. Pilot Testing & Rehabilitation Protocols PAFO V0 tests (PP12) informed next versions, with amendments to ethical protocols for pilot studies. Full exoskeleton testing (PP1) faced technical setbacks but is rescheduled for March 2025. Regarding Home Rehabilitation, similar to the exoskeleton group, regular six week meetings are organized to ensure alignment between the smart-garment/IT-platform developments and clinical requirements. SMK and PP12 defined rehabilitation protocols, including home-based exercises for children with neurological disorders. PP7 developed and validated a home rehabilitation test (WART) with VR applications, with first participants included. Learning Schemes & Health Economic Evaluation WP3 progressed through weekly national and monthly international meetings. The learning schemes (A3.1) will be based on DigComp 2.2, ensuring a structured and adaptable framework. Moodle was selected as a potential dissemination platform. Close collaboration with WP1 and WP2 ensures integration of technical advancements into training materials. A fisrt session has been held the 20th of december within 20 students of the Belgish school of Physiotherapist. In health economic evaluation (A3.6), HS Gesundheit defined cost analysis objectives, prioritizing health professionals’ and caregivers’ perspectives. A preliminary healthcare pathway was drafted, guiding future expert input. Concerning the communication actions we published 2 Newsletters and increased by 13% our followers (from 192 to 222) on social networks. Events We partipated to 11 events : 2 in France, 2 in Belgium, 2 in Netherland, and 5 in other countries, for a total of more than 300 attendees and 5 scientific papers published. 5 specialized events (scientific congress) ; 1 special session at ESMAC congress ; Annual university congress and networking event at Thomas More, 4 public events in Belgium (Voka Health Community Congress, Day of science in Geel) and France (Incredible Tech HandiTechs ; Innovation Day for Employment of People with Disabilities), public was SME and healthcare stakeholders, associations for people with disabilities .In Netherlands RE:HOMe project was presented to parents, care givers and children (nformative day 'Healthy aging with a spinal cord injury’,100 persons). We also publish in public national and regional press and specialized press.

MOTION project: Mechanised Orthosis for children with neurological disorders, (Interreg 2 seas, 2S05-038).
Main achievements of the project :
Because we believe that the best innovations start from the user needs, thanks to the collaboration between the different partners, questionnaires for parents and professionals have been established in the 4 languages to have a state of knowledge and use of these technologies. The full study is now available with more than 100 persons that answered these questionnaires (O4). Based on this study and the information provided by the partners, two MOOC training courses were developed and completed by (50) and with a certificate (O4). We designed and built 3 mechatronic modules: one for the ankle foot (PAFO), one for the hip and one for the lower limb which can be used independently or can be assembled to define an exoskeleton (O1). This allows us to provide 3 different modules adapted to different cases of use and populations increasing the scope of the project to non-walker children.
The different modules reached TRL5 (O5). PAFO, lowerlimb have been tested on (3) (4) healthy subjects and (4) (1) CP children respectively and the Hip on (2) adults (O3).
A smart garment devoted for stress evaluation during tests is available (O2).The evaluation by using virtual reality to simulate stress has been performed on healthy persons.
A cross border cooperation between the clinicians from the United Kindom, the Netherlands and Belgium and technical teams from Belgium, France allowed us to propose today different clinical protocols to tests differents modules (O3) and this is a base for future international standards(O4).
We also created a transregional network of (193) contacts to transfer technology and related knowledge from research to practical application (O4). (EN) | In the current consortium, 4 partners have already worked together on the exoskeleton modules and smart garment. We will transfer these technologies to the RE:HOME project. The technologies developed during MOTION will be used during pre-pilot test in WP2 and modules upgraded in WP1 will be tested in the first and second pilot tests (WP2).
The content of MOOC will be adapted and improved and used as a base for technical learning sessions (WP3) (EN)
