Description (EN):

Building, and in particular housing, still constitutes one of the major sources of energy use and CO2 emissions in the NPA region and Europe - estimated to approximately 40% of all energy use and 60% of all energy emissions. The problem is not simply one of energy efficiency of the buildings themselves, but includes the various challenge of proving energy for these buildings independent on fossil-fuels. There is also the challenge of embedded energy and CO2 in the materials and equipment that is used in counterintuitive ways - which involves energy and materials used during construction and the logistics of transporting materials and building components to difficult and remote locations (such as Islands). Looking to examine this in the design/construction process and eventual use of these building, one must question how sustainable are transport arrangements while also asking how waste is managed and how reuse and recycling is maximized? The Bauhaus model promoted by the EU requires we investigate compare and optimize our approach to these aspects to find the best and most viable solutions to reduce energy use and CO2 emissions in design, construction, and operation. For this project, we intended to produce a series of new models based on best practice from each of the three regions of the NPA: North Atlantic Islands, Scandinavia and Nordic, and Ireland. The Preparatory Project will identify possible pilot projects that will demonstrate these approaches in the different regions. This will be done in collaboration with existing local authorities, universities, and social housing bodies in each region. The aim would be to develop a Full Project of 3-years duration following the initial Preparatory Project, and will elaborate and demonstrate the different best practice Models identified or developed during the Preparatory Project. The initial Partnership will be expanded for the full Project to take in housing bodies and other agencies.

Actual Achievements (EN):

The BGN Project has successfully developed and implemented all agreed tasks, As Coordinator of WP1 and WP2, 2 UCC produced D1.1 which details the overall potential of the project through a series of case studies which employed both social and material best practices around building, and D1.2 which sets out the key principles emerging from several sources for best practices for the New European Bauhaus Project going forward.. Both documents are attached. A Consortium of 8 partners from 6 countries was formed and budgets were agreed and a Full Proejct Application submitted. OUAS led on WP3, which set the norm,s for demonstrator projects which oversaw the development of demonstration proposals by 8 Partners and Associates. CCAE led the WP4 on Consortium development This involved contacting NCPs and networks in of all region not already involved, seeking further Partners. This also demonstrates the considerable understanding,interest and demand thee for NEB Projects in the NPA Region.. Initial and new Partners participated in monthly Teams meetings set up by CCAE in order to progress the definition and drafting of the application. CCAE and OUAS input ad contributions were vital in setting the basic principles of the he project, ensuring a collaborative approach and aligning with the project's sustainability and innovation goals from the beginning. The Preparatory phase involved extensive planning, collaboration, and the establishment of foundation strategies aimed at integrating sustainable architecture and energy efficiency into the regional development. Through workshops, stakeholder engagement, and the development of demonstrator projects, all Partners contributed to setting the direction for sustainable and inclusive architectural practices in the Arctic region. Their work has been instrumental in aligning project objectives with the broader goals of the New European Bauhaus initiative, focusing on sustainability, exclusivity, and aesthetics. Much of the work during the period involved the identification of additional Partners, and the aligning of new Partners proposals with the project's sustainability and innovation goals. For the Full Proejct a further 6 new full Partners were identified, in Ireland, Sweden and Norway, as well as a number of Associate Partners, including one in Denmark. Sadly, Lansverk Farces was unable to participate as a Full Member due to a depletion of the Faroes regional budget. However, they are still involved as Associate Partners in the full Project. CCAE worked closely with the newly established NEB Secretariat in Brussels and attended a number of zoom meeting of Friends of NEB. There CCAE explained and promoted the BGN initiative at these meetings and made contact with the existing Nordic NEB group, (which is not focused on design and building, but other aspects of NEB in the Region. OUAS participated in the "Building Arctic Europe" conference, successfully establishing numerous new contacts for future collaborations. This engagement is expected to enhance OUAS's network, opening avenues for partnerships, projects, and exchange of knowledge within the construction industry in the Arctic region. At the "Building Arctic Europe" conference, Oulu OUAS not only engaged in discussions surrounding sustainable construction and innovation in the Arctic region but also expanded its professional network significantly. This participation provided Partners with valuable contacts across sectors, including businesses, academia, and governmental bodies, paving the way for enhanced collaborative opportunities, research projects, and knowledge exchange initiatives focused on sustainable development and technological advancements in Arctic construction. In term of demonstration, the Full Project proposes one Bauhaus Goes North joint Roll out Strategy for the NEB in the NPA Region and 4 jointly developed solution based on collaborative Pilot Projects, for University Campus building renovation (at UCC with participation of Lansverk, Faroes) , for City District Planning, (in Bodu, Norway with participation of Bloxhub in Copenhagen) for Sustainable development on Islands (in Umea with input from Cork County Coucil) and for renovation and repurposing of historic buildings (in Finland, with input from the Center for Excellence in Climate Action and Sustainability (managed by Green Skibbereen) in in West Cork) Throughout the preparatory phase of the Bauhaus Goes North project, OUAS maintained active communication with the lead partner, playing a pivotal role in the development of the main application. Representatives from OUAS, were instrumental in ensuring the project's vision and objectives were cohesively aligned with sustainability and innovation goals. Their collaborative efforts underscored the commitment to fostering a dynamic and integrated approach towards addressing the challenges and opportunities within the Arctic region's architectural landscape.
