Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

  • Other A central policy is the European Circular Action Plan, to reverse the trends in raw materials use, reduce environmental impact and ensure raw materials supply security. By striving for clearer goals and responsibilities, regulation and pricing, market development, knowledge and innovation, the government seeks to promote a circular economy.
  • The Netherlands aims for a 50% materials use reduction in 2030 (Circularity Program, 2016), and a 49% reduction of greenhouse gasses in 2030 (Climate Accord, 2019). In general, the Dutch government has more attention for recyclability of materials than for light- weighting.
  • The strategy in Belgium encompasses a Long-term Vision LTV (approved in 2013) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80-95% by 2050 compared to 1990. At the regional level, key strategic frameworks include the 2nd Walloon Sustainable Development Strategy (2016) and the Flemish Vision 2050 (a long-term strategy for Flanders, 2016). Key regional policies target to: decrease Flemish Material Footprint by 30 % by 2030, Increasing the productivity of resources by 25% between 2020 and 2035 and increasing the number of Walloon jobs contributing directly and indirectly to the circular economy by 20% by 2025.
  • Germany targets a 65% reduction of greenhouse gases in 2030 in comparison to 1990 (Climate Protection law, 2022), and Climate neutrality by 2045 (Climate Protection law, 2022). The Federal Government is currently developing a National Circular Economy Strategy (NKWS). The MWIDE Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia invests heavily for the transition of coal-fired power to a hydrogen model region, which links to our demo project on sustainable hydrogen tanks.
