Description (EN):

In CE, the mechanical sector encompasses various sub-sectors, including machinery, industrial equipment and manufacturing as significant contributor to the economy of CE, employing millions of people and generating a substantial share of the region’s exports. The sector currently faces several challenges in terms of reduction of waste streams, as well as difficulty in sorting and recycling, due to complex composition of products and the presence of hazardous materials. As recommended by the Circular Economy Action Plan, supporting the 2030 EU Climate Plan, the introduction of Circular Economy solutions in both production and product process of many companies, could reduce the production of waste streams. However, significant differences exist today between countries such as Austria, Italy, and Germany on the one hand and Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland on the other one, as regards the availability of facilities, services, instruments and capacity building paths for mechanical companies / SMEs aimed at introduce circular economy models. To deal with these challenges, REUSE2030 aims to increase the adoption of circular economy principles by mechanical sector, with the introduction of instruments and tools facilitating the application of circular economy models to both production and product phases of mechanical companies / SMEs at CE level. Through the project implementation, the existing disparities concerning the availability of services and instruments supporting mechanical companies / SMEs in different CE countries will be faced and the waste streams reduced from the sector. These are in turn the expected changes that the project wants to achieve in the short-medium terms. RESU2030 is based on a transnational cooperation of business supporting organisation, universities, chamber of commerce, competence centres and development agencies of 9 different CE countries. The partners will analyse a groups of mechanical companies / SMEs in CE, to identify the relevant waste streams, as well as existing or adoptable circular economy solutions that will be summarized in a Transnational Strategy, and two operational plans aimed at producing: 1. Digital Circular Inventory and App, supporting companies in identify applicable and sustainable circular economy solutions on the basis of their type of waste production; 2. Zero Carbon Tool Kit, enabling users to self-assess the carbon footprint of their products and identify opportunities for sustainable design and production optimization. Both tools will allow the companies to autonomously choose sustainable circular economy solutions and processes, determining the innovative approach of the project. These tools will make circular economy models and solutions available to businesses in the CE areas, as well as a network of research institutions, universities and services available to them, for which the transnational cooperation of the partners is essential.

Actual Achievements (EN):

Answer: During its first year of implementation, the REUSE2030 project has moved from initial coordination and setup of activities to the delivery of concrete results and outputs, creating an effective basis for the testing and adoption of circular economy tools in the mechanical sector. The partnership has worked together to align strategic visions, define methodologies, and engage key stakeholders and companies. Among the main objectives achieved, the project successfully mapped 100 mechanical companies and SMEs and collected in-depth data on their production processes, waste streams, and interest in circular solutions. This was done through a joint and transparent Open Call and a series of participatory workshops involving companies, business associations, training organizations and experts. The data collected served as the basis for a comprehensive analysis of existing and applicable circular economy practices, tailored to metal, plastic, and chemical waste. Based on this knowledge, the consortium has delivered two key outputs to date, including: the REUSE2030 Partnership, through the signing of a joint agreement establishing common rules and commitments; the REUSE2030 Transnational Strategy, outlining a shared vision and roadmap for promoting circularity in the mechanical industry. In addition, several analytical and strategic reports/materials have been completed as deliverables, including a database and digital map of mechanical companies/SMEs in the region, studies on existing and potential circular economy solutions, a comparative matching report, and operational plans for both the Digital Circular Inventory and the Zero Carbon Tool. A joint report has also been compiled summarising the outcomes of participatory workshops held across partner countries. These outputs represent the first steps in translating knowledge into practical instruments. The added value of the transnational approach is noticeable in the diversity and complexity of interviews and case studies analyzed, the peer-review process among partners, and the joint development of methodologies that ensure replicability across different contexts. Communication efforts were equally important: the project website and social media channels were actively managed, news and updates were regularly published, and companies were kept engaged through webinars and direct contact. As the project enters its second year, the necessary groundwork has been completed to initiate pilot testing, capacity-building activities and broader dissemination. Italy – Austria 2014 - 2020 - CLEANSTONE- Recovery and upgrading of stone processing waste for ecological sustainability (EN) | The CleanStone project is a research and development project that focuses on the recovery and valorisation of stone processing waste to promote the sustainability of the sector. Stone processing scraps are often seen as waste but they can contain precious materials that can be recovered and reused in new stone productions. The CleanStone project is an example of how technology and research can be used to reduce the environmental effects of production. Reuse 2030 can resume the reuse logic of this project to identify new economy solutions circular also valid for the mechanical industries. EuropeanGreenDeal This project is in line the EU Green Deal and its climate neutrality goals, especially for what concerns the mobilization of industry for a clean and circular economy to achieve the objectives of a circular and zero climate impact economy. European industry is still too "linear" and dependent on new extracted, traded and transformed materials into goods and sold off as waste or emissions. For this reason, the Union is committed to encourage companies to offer and to allow consumers to choose, reusable, durable and repairable products.
TerritorialAgenda2030 The project is in line the 2030 Territorial Agenda as regards the will to update infrastructures and modernize industries to make them sustainable, to achieve greater efficiency of the resources and a greater adoption of clean technologies that respect the environment and industrial processes.
EUStrategyDanubeRegion This project is in line the EUSDR Strategy and its PA08 focused on the Competitiveness of Enterprises, in particular to foster cooperation and exchange of knowledge between SMEs, academia and the public sector as well as its PA02 to improve energy efficient, cost efficient and innovative low-carbon technologies, including smart solutions while respecting the principle of technological neutrality.
