Description (EN):

With 2°C warming since the beginning of measurements climate change affects the Northern Alps disproportionally and causes fundamental changes of mountain forests, which require proactive adaptation regarding the dynamics of site conditions: In order to make them fit for the 21st century we have to do the right things in the right place. The forest information systems that have been created in close cooperation between Tyrol and Bavaria are an indispensable component in the practice of forestry and an example for other regions. The goals of this project are to extend the information system to Vorarlberg, to render the climate sensitive components temperature and moisture regime dynamic and to supply guidance and best practice examples for forest owners in the program territory. Outputs of WINALP 21 shall be: 1. Dynamic models of site factors and forest types: Temperature and moisture regime are made dynamic using climate scenarios. On this basis future forest types are modelled, climate sensitive sites with maximum need for action are identified and mapped out. 2. Multi-criteria evaluation of tree species suitability: Future risks of cultivating tree species are derived and for Bavaria effects of climate on tree growth are evaluated. 3. Incorporating climate dynamics into practical guidance: By adding climate dynamics from outputs 1 and 2, the WINALP handbooks of forest types are developed to tools for planning and guiding adaptation to climate change. 4. Establishment of demonstration sites: Climate sensitive example stands of important forest types are implemented in a transnational network as monitoring plots and best-practice examples. 5. Project communication: Results are transfered to existing information systems, advisory tools and existing initatives for adaptation. Transnational workshops, education and advanced training as well as publication propagate project results. Project duration: 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2025

Mit 2°C Erwärmung seit Beginn der Messungen betrifft der Klimawandel die Nordalpen überproportional und bedingt tiefgreifende Veränderungen der Bergwälder, die proaktiv an die Dynamik der Standortbedingungen angepasst und nach dem Motto "das Richtige am richtigen Standort" fit für das 21. Jahrhundert gemacht werden müssen. Die in enger Zusammenarbeit aufgebauten Waldinformationssysteme sind fester Bestandteil der Forstpraxis in Tirol und Bayern und Vorbild für andere Regionen. Ziel des Projekts ist es unter anderem, die Informationssysteme auf Vorarlberg auszuweiten, die klimasensitiven Komponenten Wärme- und Wasserhaushalt zu dynamisieren und Beratungsinstrumente und Best Practice-Beispiele für die Waldbesitzer:innen im Programmgebiet bereitzustellen. Die Outputs von WINALP 21 sind: 1. Klimadynamisierung von Standortfaktoren und Waldtypen: Wärme- und Wasserhaushalt werden anhand von Klimaszenarien dynamisiert. Daraus werden zukünftige Waldtypen modelliert, klimasensitive Standorte mit höchstem Handlungsbedarf identifiziert und räumlich dargestellt. 2. Multikriterielle Bewertung der Baumarteneignung: Die Neubewertung umfasst neben einer Modellierung des künftig erwarteten Anbaurisikos eine klimasensitive Waldwachstumsmodellierung. 3. Klimadynamisierung der Praxishilfen: Die in WINALP erarbeiteten Waldtypenhandbücher werden anhand der Outputs von 1. und 2. zu klimadynamisierten Planungs- und Beratungshilfen für die forstliche Praxis weiterentwickelt. 4. Einrichtung von Demonstrationsflächen: In einem länderübergreifenden Netzwerk werden klimasensitive Waldbestände wichtiger Waldtypen der Nordalpen dokumentiert und als Monitoring- und Best Practice-Flächen eingerichtet. 5. Projektkommunikation: Die Ergebnisse werden in bestehende Informationssysteme und Beratungsinstrumente sowie in bestehenden Initiativen umgesetzt. Länderübergreifende Workshops, Aus- und Weiterbildungsprogramme sowie Publikationen verbreiten die Ergebnisse. Laufzeit: 1.1.23 bis 31.12.25

Actual Achievements (EN):

During the first reporting period, all project participants focused on the preparation and further development of the data sets and models required for regionalisation and subsequent dynamisation. This preparatory work was carried out for all relevant site factors such as relief, soil, geology and climate. Existing data gaps were filled by means of surveys, models, calculations, derivations or data queries. For the use of suitable climate scenarios, several existing and recognised variants were tested for their suitability for the project and finally selected. On the basis of the prepared data, the parameterisation of the regionalisation and dynamisation models could be started. This work was always carried out in small groups, in which the respective experts from the partner institutions constantly and closely coordinated their work. Project meetings were also held regularly (five times), where all project members were informed about the current status of the work packages. This also allowed new ideas and thoughts from other working groups to be introduced. During the reporting period, the main focus was on modelling and dynamising site factors, as well as creating species distribution models for tree species. Various predictors were tested for suitability, and a near-final selection was made. During the dynamisation process, suitable time slices up to 2100, as well as various suitable climate scenarios, were taken into account. This work forms the core of forest type dynamisation, some of which has already begun. All results were evaluated, refined and discussed at regular meetings between project participants and forest administrators. These meetings and workshops also involved specifying the future integration of these results into practical aids. In addition to manuals, fact sheets and maps, demonstration areas are an essential component of the implementation of forestry practices. These will be used by foresters and multipliers to demonstrate the impact of climate change on mountain forests. Significant progress was made in selecting and establishing these areas in both countries during the reporting period. Further progress was made in project communication. Initial results and project progress were published and discussed in various ways.

Actual Achievements (DE):

Ein Schwerpunkt in der ersten Berichtsperiode lag bei allen Projektbeteiligten auf der Aufbereitung und Weiterentwicklung von Datenbeständen und Modellen, welche für die Regionalisierung und anschließende Dynamisierung benötigt werden. Diese Vorarbeiten wurden für alle relevanten Standortfaktoren wie Relief, Boden, Geologie und Klima durchgeführt. Vorhandene Datenlücken konnten mittels Erhebungen, Modellen, Berechnungen, Herleitungen oder Datenanfragen geschlossen werden. Für die Verwendung von passenden Klimaszenarien wurden diverse vorhandene und anerkannte Varianten auf Eignung fürs Vorhaben getestet und final ausgewählt. Es konnte begonnen werden, die Regionalisierungs- und Dynamisierungsmodelle auf Basis diese vorbereiteten Daten zu parametrisieren. Diese Arbeiten fanden stets in Kleingruppen statt, in welchen sich die jeweiligen Expertinnen und Experten der Partnerinstitutionen stetig und eng abstimmten. Es wurden außerdem regelmäßig (fünf Mal) Projekttreffen durchgeführt, an welchem alle Projektmitarbeiterinnen und –mitarbeiter über den aktuellen Stand der Arbeitspakete informiert wurden. So konnten auch neue Ideen und Gedanken anderer Arbeitsgruppen eingebracht werden. Im Berichtszeitraum standen überwiegen die Modellierung und Dynamisierung von Standortfaktoren und die Artverbreitungsmodelle von Baumarten im Vordergrund. Es konnten diverse Prädiktoren auf ihre Eignung getestet und eine nahezu finale Auswahl getroffen werden. Bei der Dynamisierung wurden außerdem passende Zeitscheiben bis 2100 und potentielle und verschieden extreme Klimaszenarien mitberücksichtigt. Diese Arbeiten bilden den Kern der tlw. bereits begonnenen Waldtypendynamisierung. In regelmäßigen Treffen unter den Projektbeteiligten und den Forstverwaltungen wurden alle Ergebnisse evaluiert, verfeinert und diskutiert. Auch die zukünftige Einbindung dieser Ergebnisse in Praxishilfen wurden in diesen Treffen und Workshops weiter konkretisiert. Wesentlicher Bestandteil der Implementierung in die forstliche Praxis sind, neben Handbüchern, Steckbriefen und Karten, Demonstrationsflächen. Diese sollen Försterinnen und Förster sowie Multiplikatoren zur Veranschaulichung der Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf den Bergwald dienen. Auch diese Flächenauswahl und Einrichtung konnten im Berichtszeitraum in beiden Ländern große Forstschritte erzielt werden. Auch die Projektkommunikation konnte weiter vorangetrieben werden. So wurden erste Ergebnisse und der Projektfortgang auf diversen Wegen publiziert und diskutiert.

Waldinformationssystem Nordalpen (WINALP) (DE) | Wie der Name sagt, baut WINALP 21 nach 10 Jahren erfolgreicher Umsetzung auf die Ergebnisse von WINALP (2008-2011) auf. Die in Tirol und Bayern bestehenden, in der Praxis gut verankerten Waldinformationssysteme werden im Hinblick auf Klimaanpassung weiterentwickelt. Vorarlberg kann beim Aufbau seines Waldinformationssystems auf Methoden und Daten aus den benachbarten Ländern zurückgreifen. In Oberöstrreich wird eine Pilotstudie für ein Waldinformationssystem durchgeführt. (DE), Biotop- und Artenschutz im Berg- und Schutzwald (BASCH) (DE) | Im BASCH-Projekt (2017-2020) bildeten die Waldinformationssysteme von Bayern und Tirol eine wichtige Referenz für die Auflösung von Zielkonflikten zwischen Schutzwaldsanierung und Artenschutz. Im Klimawandel werden sich die in BASCH bearbeiteten lichten Wälder einschließlich ihrer Naturgefahren und ihrer Biodiversität in Lage und Ausdehnung verändern. WINALP 21 liefert Szenarien für diese Entwicklung und erlaubt die Berücksichtigung des Klimawandels bei Fachplanungen. (DE), Dynamische Waldtypisierung Steiermark (FORSITE) (DE) | Das aus dem Fonds für Ländliche Entwicklung (LE 14-20) geförderte Großprojekt FORSITE (2018-2022) verwendete für die dynamische Waldtypisierung in der Steiermark wichtige Prinzipien von WINALP. Im Sinne eines Staffellaufs nimmt WINALP 21 im Gegenzug die in FORSITE entwickelten Methoden der Dynamisierung und der Kommunikation des Klimawandels an Waldbesitzer auf. Die BFW bringt aus FORSITE das Know How zur Modellierung von Klima und Wasserhaushalt in WINALP 21 ein. (DE), TransFORmALPS (Alpine Space) (DE) | Das in Vorbereitung befindliche Alpine-Space-Projekt TransFORMAlps gehört zu den Star-Initiatives der EUSALP-Task Force "Multifunctionality of Forests". Die Projektziele "Verbesserung und Vervollständigung flächendeckender Grundlagen für den Waldumbau" und "einfach nutzbare fachliche Grundlagen für die Forstverwaltungen und Waldbesitzer" werden für das Programmgebiet von WINALP 21 bereitgestellt, wo auch eine Pilotregion von TransFORmALPS eingerichtet werden soll. (DE), EUSALP (DE) | Über die Beteiligung von Projektpartnern an den EUSALP Projekten REDIAFOR und MAMF sowie in der Action group 6 ist eine Vernetzung und Vorstellung der Projektergebnisse gewährleistet.
