Contribution to wider strategies and policies:
- EUStrategyDanubeRegion The main project clearly contributes to the second strategic objective of the EUSDR “Stimulating sustainable development” in several aspects. By supporting rural entrepreneurs to develop, adopt and uptake bio-based solutions, RuBIO contributes to strengthen the rural bio-based ecosystems and enhance the competitiveness of the Danube region (economic development) but also to stimulate the use of renewable biological resources for production and consumption (circular economy). Moreover, RuBIO addresses sustainable development both in terms of circular economy but also in terms of balanced development between urban and rural areas – which is another challenge at the heart of the EUSDR. Indeed, the EUSDR is aiming to mitigate the depopulation and land abandonment in rural areas which is caused by work- induced migration flows.
- EuropeanGreenDeal The RuBIO project stands as a beacon of alignment with the ambitious strategies and policies outlined in the EU Green Deal. Rooted in the essence of rural bio-innovation, RuBIO embarks on a journey that harmonises with the overarching goals of the Green Deal, particularly in its commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions and achieving carbon neutrality. With a comprehensive work plan encompassing desktop analysis, workshops and panel discussions with experts, and other activities, RuBIO will explore and develop a project proposal that will contribute to supporting the developing innovation ecosystems, bio-economy, circular economy, and circular bio-economy in the Danube region. Through collaboration, research, and innovation, RuBIO paves the way for a greener, more resilient future where rural areas are pivotal in shaping a sustainable world for future generations.
- An initiative like RuBIO aligns closely with the goals and objectives of the European Green Deal, a comprehensive roadmap introduced by the European Commission to transform the European Union into a sustainable and climate-neutral economy. RuBIO's focus on innovation ecosystems, bio-economy, circular economy, and circular bio-economy resonates strongly with the key pillars of the European Green Deal, which include achieving climate neutrality, protecting biodiversity, and promoting a circular economy.
- Additionally, RuBIO's efforts to support rural economies and communities align with the European Green Deal's aim of ensuring a just and inclusive transition towards a greener economy, particularly by creating opportunities for rural development and job creation.
- TerritorialAgenda2030 The Territorial Agenda 2030 emphasizes the importance of ensuring future perspectives for all places and people. Similarly, the RuBIO project aims to contribute to the revitalization of rural areas by addressing the demographic challenge of declining entrepreneurship and leveraging bio-innovation to create opportunities. RuBIO will create inclusive development pathways that empower rural communities and individuals by focusing on rural bio-innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Territorial cohesion is central to the Territorial Agenda 2030, which calls for strengthening the territorial dimension of sector policies. RuBIO will address this by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among diverse stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, policymakers, industry leaders, and academic experts across different regions within the EU. By promoting collaboration and sharing best practices, RuBIO will enhance territorial cohesion and promote balanced development across rural areas.
- The Territorial Agenda 2030 aims to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Europe. RuBIO will contribute to this objective by focusing on sustainable rural development through bio-innovation. By promoting the adoption of sustainable practices and technologies in rural areas, RuBIO will contribute to achieving SDGs related to sustainable agriculture, innovation, and economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability.
- The Territorial Agenda 2030 encourages the implementation of pilot actions to showcase how the territorial dimension of policies can be addressed effectively. RuBIO can serve as a pilot action by demonstrating innovative approaches to rural development and bio-innovation. Through its activities, outputs, and deliverables, RuBIO can provide valuable insights and lessons learned that can inform future initiatives and policy development in line with the Territorial Agenda 2030.
- Other The RuBIO project is intricately linked to the overarching objectives and principles of The New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative, as set forth by the European Commission.
- 1. RuBIO embodies the principle of sustainability by focus to rural bio-innovation. The project aims to create a more sustainable economy and environment by developing and promoting bio-based solutions integrating biotechnology, biomanufacturing, and advanced manufacturing.
- 2. RuBIO embraces inclusiveness by addressing the demographic challenges of rural areas. By fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in rural bio-innovation, the project aims to create opportunities for a diverse range of stakeholders, including young entrepreneurs, women, and other underrepresented groups. This inclusive approach echoes NEB's encouraging dialogue across cultures, disciplines, genders, and ages, ensuring that the benefits of innovation are accessible to all.
- While RuBIO's primary focus is on bio-economy and entrepreneurship, the project also acknowledges the importance of aesthetics in rural development. By revitalizing rural areas through bio-innovation, RuBIO aims to create aesthetical environments enhancing quality of life for residents. This consideration of aesthetics aligns with NEB's vision of creating beautiful and inspiring places that resonate with individuals emotionally. Additionally, biotechnology and biomanufacturing also resonate in NEB, as NEB Academy will support upskilling linked to circularity and biotech and biomanufacturing in the built environment.
- Also, RuBIO can address the themes outlined in the NEB initiative's call for proposals under the European Urban Initiative (EUI-IA). By exploring innovative construction and renovation processes using bio-based materials, repurposing existing buildings for affordable housing, and promoting sustainable practices in rural communities, RuBIO can contribute to the broader objectives of NEB while addressing specific challenges rural areas face.
- Other New Commission Action Plan to boost biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the EU
- RuBIO will contribute to the objectives outlined in the New Commission Action Plan to boost biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the EU, by addressing key challenges, proposing solutions, and promoting sustainable and innovative approaches to rural bio-innovation.
- RuBIO will also discuss questions of existing regulatory processes and overcoming regulatory obstacles in rural bio-innovation.
- Among discussions with experts in A1.1, RuBIO can explore opportunities to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative AI in rural bio-innovation processes. By incorporating AI technologies into its methodologies and approaches, RuBIO can address the exploration of using big data and AI in biotechnology and biomanufacturing.
- RuBIO’s initiative can address the question of the innovation ecosystem through a market perspective, stimulating the discussion and contributing to awareness raising in the field of increasing market demand for bio-based products by demonstrating the sustainability and environmental benefits of rural bio-innovation solutions. By identifying bio-based solutions offering lower environmental impact than conventional products, RuBIO’s initiative contributes to building market demand for bio-manufactured products.
- Through its activities, including discussion panels with expert speakers and broader audiences, the project will seek to raise public awareness of biotechnology and biomanufactured products. By highlighting the societal and sustainability benefits of these products, RuBIO contributes to building public trust and understanding, addressing one of the challenges identified by the Commission.
