Forestry and forest-based industries are facing labor shortages, while the number of those choosing careers in forestry is declining. At the same time, the sector is known for providing so-called "green jobs" that help maintain forest ecosystems and ensure sustainable production of forest products and fair treatment of workers. Fem2forests aims to (1) develop innovative career pathways for girls and young women, (2) strengthen the capacity of forestry education institutions through mainstreaming of the gender perspective, and (3) facilitate the framework conditions for efficient involvement of women at different levels and stages in forestry organizations and relevant labour markets. To achieve these objectives, the Fem2forests concept follows an interactive and multi-stakeholder-driven innovation model that covers career paths in forestry from early orientation stages to leadership positions. Workshops, surveys, and interviews are used to identify the needs and interests of girls and young women in the forestry sector. Education and training institutions, as well as employers, business support organizations, and other stakeholders, will be closely involved throughout the project to help change awareness and create a framework for a more diverse workforce that promotes sustainable development, especially in rural areas. Through all these activities, we aim to increase the proportion of young women in the forestry sector by 2030 and beyond. The project is built from the bottom up, so the communication and involvement of target groups from the start of the project is essential. We believe that the participation of the key target groups will bring change in the forestry sector in DR. Fem2forests project is built on the solid ground laid down by its successor Fem4Forest (DTP3-500), which gave us a first insight into the status of women in the forestry sector in DR. Experiences, methodologies developed and gathered information will be our solid background, and it is our motivation to work with your girls and women. The Fem2forest project is proposed at a time when all countries in DR are facing a shortage of working force in the forestry sector. We believe that changing the perception of forestry as labour intensive and man-dominated sector among youngsters can change the labour market and bring "fresh wind" into the sector.

Actual Achievements (EN):

The Fem2forests is a project with 15 partners from 9 countries. We started with the project on 1.1.2024. The project aims to develop innovative career paths for girls and young women, strengthening the capacity of forestry education institutions by integrating the gender equality aspect and creating favourable conditions for the effective inclusion of women at different levels in forestry and forestry-related sectors. To achieve these goals, the Fem2forests concept follows an interactive and innovative model that involves different actors and covers different levels of career paths in forestry, from the early stages of orientation to leadership positions. In the 1st reporting period, we focused on getting insights into barriers and needs of girls, women, educators and decision-makers in education that will broaden their view of career opportunities. These insights were collected through questionnaires among girls in secondary schools and faculties and through the participation of experts and professionals at round tables. All survey participants were female, resulting in a total of 1283 completed questionnaires. 18 roundtables were carried out. The roundtable brought together panellists from all fields of education, from primary school to university level, adult education and researchers involved in forest pedagogy. One of the key findings from the round tables is that the diversity of professions in forestry is very poorly recognised. This ignorance is probably the main reason for the stereotypes associated with women in forestry. We need to show young people that forestry is one of the most important green jobs of the future. Nine national reports were prepared and Prizma as SO leader prepared a common report „Barriers and needs for inclusion of girls and young women“.Girls and young women were involved in the questionnaire, teachers and professors and others involved in the education system in all 9 countries were involved through round tables and different communication channels. In total 320 different organisations/companies/authorities were included, counting to nearly 6500 individuals reached. Communication activities: A press release was prepared in English and in all PP languages was prepared to inform our target groups about project objectives and planned activities. Project posters were prepared in all PP countries, Face Book (FB) posts and news were published. The first project flyer was prepared in English and in all PP languages, presenting project activities and project objectives. We started with the organisation of the first project event that will take place in Portorož on 24-25.10.2024. The project web page is edited and regularly updated. In the first reporting period, the project FB achieved a notable 958 followers, reflecting successful outreach and engagement efforts, resulting in interactions from 5,905 individuals. This high percentage emphasizes the inherent appeal and relevance of the content, demonstrating effective outreach without reliance on paid advertising. During this time, 21 posts were published, primarily targeting a predominantly female audience, which comprises 78.5% of the followers. The LinkedIn account has attracted 579 followers since its establishment. In total, 11 posts have been published, generating 6,042 organic impressions. In the second reporting period, we focused on building a communication network for efficient project promotion. An international conference titled: “EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY IN FORESTRY: CHANGING THE IMAGE OF FORESTRY” held in Portorož from 24-25.10.2024 was the main activity to build a strong network of international stakeholders. The event focussed on empowering young women in the forestry sector while promoting a shift towards inclusion. The conference was attended by 114 participants from 25 countries. We organized the second PP meeting in Portorož on 23. October.2024 – all PP took part at the meeting. Minutes from the meeting were prepared and shared among project partners. During second reporting period we focused on delivering Output 1.1. Under PRIZMA’s leadership, representatives from project partners actively participate in the working group’s, including attending online meetings and contributing to the development and preparation of project results. PRIZMA collaborated with project partners by assigning the tasks and we jointly work to write the “Methodology for participatory approach under the gender perspective”. These guidelines focus on the methodology of engaging young people in exploring their career options but also embed a gender perspective to ensure that all genders have equal access to opportunities and the freedom to pursue careers based on their interests, rather than on societal expectations. They are meant for schools, education, training and career orientation centers, forestry organizations and anyone else interested in learning how to embed a gender perspective into participatory career orientation. Social media platforms, particularly Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, played a crucial role in the dissemination of project results and the promotion of significant events. A key focus was the presentation of findings from Deliverable D.1.1.1, which explores the barriers and needs of young women in forestry, as well as the promotion of the highly successful International Conference, "Equality and Diversity in Forestry: Changing the Image of Forestry." In total, 154 communication activities were reported by all project partners, of which 104 were digital activities (mostly website and social media posts), making 68% of all communication efforts directed towards digital activities. The main content of digital activities in the second reporting period was promotion of the Report D.1.1.1 Barriers and needs of girls and young women in forestry sector. Fem2forests is a transnational initiative involving 15 partners from 9 countries, launched on 1 January 2024. The project aims to develop innovative career pathways for girls and young women in the forestry sector by strengthening the capacity of forestry education institutions and integrating gender equality at all levels. Using an interactive and inclusive model, Fem2forests engages diverse stakeholders and addresses career development from early orientation to leadership roles. During the third reporting period, the project focused on preparing for pilot activities and launching an impactful awareness-raising campaign. To better understand the educational landscape, partners collected data on national forestry education systems and conducted an online questionnaire involving 925 female forestry professionals across the Danube region. Insights gathered through interviews informed the development of innovative concepts for gender awareness and competencies in educational and training institutions. Each partner country identified and documented at least two good practice examples of career orientation in forestry, resulting in a compilation of 19 practices presented in a multilingual booklet. These were discussed during national round tables and a transnational event titled “Advancing Forestry Career Orientation for Girls and Young Women.” The Ambassador Programme was also launched, with 24 women professionals participating in training sessions aimed at promoting gender equality and serving as role models. An innovative awareness campaign was initiated, inviting young girls to co-create graphic novels reflecting their perspectives on forestry careers. Supported by mentors, these creative activities are underway in all partner countries. In total, 94 communication activities were reported, with 55 conducted digitally—primarily through websites and social media—accounting for nearly 60% of outreach efforts. These activities generated 4,889 views, 3,856 impressions, and 591 interactions, reaching an estimated audience of over 25,100 individuals. Additionally, 122 representatives from key target groups—including educational institutions, research bodies, and public authorities—were actively engaged. The third partner meeting was held in Freising on 27–28 March 2025, also serving as the first-year review. All partners participated, and meeting minutes were shared. The project continues to maintain strong internal communication through regular online meetings and a shared SharePoint platform.

Fem4Forest (EN) | Fem2forests will build on the results of Fem4Forest (Interreg Danube) project, which identified the needs of women in the forestry sector and, through innovative learning approaches and a series of pilot actions, strengthened the competencies and competitiveness of women in the forestry sector across the Danube region. The Fem4Forest project offered new and well-adapted innovative learning approach which will support a more active role of women in the forest sector.
The overall Fem4Forest concept followed an interactive innovation model where innovation occurs as a result of multi-actor interactions driven by the needs of society and market, state of the art of science and technology, and organizational capabilities. All planned activities were demand-driven and target three most crucial components: social inclusion, gender equality and economic independence. The Fem2forests project will built on these experiences. Due to the multi-actor approach, Fem4Forest had the genuine and strong involvement of target groups engaged in various activities to voice their needs and co-create GPE. Fem2Forest will benefit of the high involvement of target groups from Fem4Forest. (EN), FORESDA (Interreg DTP) (EN) | Fem2forests will build on results of the FORESDA (Interreg DTP) project, which oversaw transformation of traditional forest-based industries into sustainable and innovative manufacturing areas through development and support of cross-sectoral collaborative networks and innovation projects, implementation of cross-sectoral pilot innovation environments and building up supporting capacities in relevant organisations. (EN), ROSEWOOD (H2020) and ROSEWOOD4.0 (H2020) (EN) | Fem2forests will build also on results of ROSEWOOD (H2020) and ROSEWOOD4.0 (H2020) projects, where strong networks connecting multiple actors along the forest value chain were established. Sustainable wood mobilisation in Europe was promoted taking into account also the emphasis to overcome the gender related issues. (EN), WomEn-PULS - Interreg AT-HU (EN) | In order to develop innovative career pathways for young female and to improve gender-related perspective through the education process, results from WomEn-PULS project (Interreg AT-HU) and project Promotion of Entrepreneurship and Crafts in the Forestry and Timber Sector (call?) will be considered. In the design of career orientation activities, we will include the experiences and results of the Career Center for Young People project - Všečkam in grem, which was implemented in the eastern half of Slovenia in the past years as a national project. (EN) | Creation of educational platform for professional and personal development of women in the forest sector of Ukraine (Ukrainian Women Fund, funding of Canadian Government), WEACT Program: Acting for Women and Their Opportunities (UNFPA).We can also learn from AGRIGEP (Horizon Europe) project that aims at Fostering gender equality in the agricultural sector. (EN), Net4Forest (Erasmus+) (EN) | The main objective of the Net4forest project was to develop and promote the vocational education and training (VET) for specific group of forest owners. The main aim was to support forest owners in increasing income from their forest through optimizing the costs and increasing the efficiency of wood and forest services marketing. Net4forests created new innovative pathways for efficient operations in private forests, through knowledge exchange, teaching and transfer of information’s first of all to trainers (training of trainers) and followed by forest owners (hands-on guidelines and toolkit). Developed outputs (especially toolkit and Good practice examples)were presented and promoted also among students and pupils at forestry secondary school and forestry faculty.
Net4forests analysed the innovation needs of forest owners in forest management, set up transnational exchanged of experiences and knowledge, and demonstrated the transferability of good practice examples by a series of education and promotion activities to push forward the ability of forest owners to innovate their forest management and to boost their competitiveness on the wood market. The project thereby offered new and well adapted innovation instruments which facilitated the innovation process of the Net4forests partners and their target groups. Net4Forest was coordinated by Slovenian forestry institute (dr. Nike Krajnc). Partners from Slovenia, Spain, Estonija, Latvia and Sweden participated.
(EN), FOREST4EU (EN) | The main and long-term objective of FOREST4EU is to effectively share useful and easy-to-understand knowledge for the forest and agroforestry sector by developing a European multi-actor network to promote and disseminate in EU countries the best practices and other practical knowledge and results, related to the "innovation" of national/local forest and agroforestry EIP-AGRI OGs. This will promote the sustainability of private forestry and agroforestry (and rural areas in general) through new business models, social innovation, and climate change resilience measures. FOREST4EU provides intensive knowledge transfer activities to guide the formation of new alliances of farmers, foresters, policy makers and other stakeholders in Europe to demonstrate the feasibility of alternative strategies and systems that are or could be funded at the local/national level by EIP-AGRI OGs.
GOFOREST is a new H2020 project and Fem2Forest will build on experiences of gathering and promotion of good practice examples and building a bottom-up process. (EN)
