There exist more than 5.000 manors in rural & remote areas of the south-eastern Baltic Sea Region. They are connected by manifold historical & cultural links that are, in particular, the result of numerous border changes. This „Baltic Manors landscape” is a shared cultural heritage that is distinctive & apparent, and that stretches across 7 countries (DE, DK, SE, PL, LT + LV, EE) while its main parts are found in the SBA. Today, more than 900 “Baltic Manors” are hosting recreational & cultural offers (e.g. hotels, museums, art exhibitions, etc.). Many of the houses make cross-border relations visible for guests & visitors, and raise awareness for the shared manorial heritage. At the same time, they often contribute to more sustainable & inclusive rural development (e.g. manor hotels offering bio-food from local producers), too. Various examples (e.g. TRANSROMANICA, VIA REGIA) show that cross-border culture routes can be capable instruments for the valorisation of shared European heritage, and the status as “European Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” (ECR) can boost their effects even further. This is because the related certification process is a best practice methodology for effectively utilising common European heritage. Notwithstanding if the ECR status – which is awarded in the form of a competition – can be achieved or not, the creation of an „European Route of the Baltic Manors” in line with the ECR certification requirements may therefore create significant socio-economic benefits for remote areas of the SBA. In the last 20 years, various initiatives & networks emerged that foster the touristic valorisation of the Baltic manorial heritage (e.g. “South Baltic Manors” project, regional & national associations of manor owners), the preservation of it, as well as research & education in the field (e.g. ENCOUNTER network, “Manors Summer School” of Vilnius Academy of Arts / LT, Research Centre for Manors in the BSR, University of Greifswald / DE). This pre-work provides the opportunity to take the next step by creating an “European Route of the Baltic Manors” and striving for its certification as “European Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” (ECR). Against this background, the project Baltic Manors ROUTE aims at build up an „European Route of the Baltic Manors” in line with the principles of an „European Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” (ECR), and to enter into the formal certification procedure for the latter within the project lifetime. The work plan of the project follows the principles of the ECR certification, which is widely recognised as best practice methodology for sustainable & inclusive valorisation of shared cultural heritage It includes the following work packages & activities: WP 1: DURABLE CROSS-BORDER MANAGEMENT & GOVERNANCE creates the “Baltic Manors Association”, and involves manor owners & other stakeholder into a broad dialogue & collaboration for developing the route. WP 3: CROSS-BORDER COOPERATION IN RESEARCH & EDUCATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE induces research on the shared manorial heritage and education events for young people on it. Thus, it delivers the basis for a scientific delineation and justification of the route, and prerequisites for long-term durability. WP 4: DEVELOPING & JOINTLY PROMOTING INCLUSIVE MANOR TOURISM OFFERS defines the standards for selecting offers & houses for the route, facilitates the development of inclusive manor tourism offers that comply with them, and promotes the route and its offers towards domestic & international visitors. WP 5: LAUNCHING THE “EUROPEAN ROUTE OF THE BALTIC MANORS” & APPLYING FOR ECR STATUS initialises the certification of the route as “Cultural Route of the Baltic Manors”, and launches it to the public. The project, therefore, will create an attractive and durable cross-border tourism product that contributes to inclusive & sustainable tourism development in rural parts of the SBA.
