The paper packaging materials are omnipresent and the problem became more emerging during the COVID-19 pandemic as it facilitated the consumers behavior and caused an increase in online, ecommerce and social media market. The average consumer collects several boxes per week which end up in the waste management facility. Imperfection and leakages in the segregation and collection systems result in only partial recovery of paper packaging and contamination of the portion that ends up in the paper recycling facilities resulting in higher cost and environmental impact of the recycling process. Instead of recycling, recovery and regeneration, the share of the reuse could be increased to reduce the environmental footprint of the life cycle. The BePacMan project focuses on extending the life cycles of paper packaging through cross-sector and cross-border approaches to reuse in the South Baltic region. The partner countries will develop sustainable concepts, solutions and business models for this purpose and for structurized support to SMEs. Strategic collaborations will be set and exchange of the ideas with important stakeholders such as e-commerce, logistics and waste management companies as well as technology providers and political decision-makers will take place. In this way, new economically and ecologically sustainable business models for the reuse of packaging are to be developed. The packaging should remain in its shape for as long as possible, thus avoiding the generation of paper waste by reusing the paper packaging to extend the life cycle of the packaging materials and thus facilitate the shift from linear to circular resource use. At the same time, the energy and water costs for processing the paper can be further optimized through recycling and climate-damaging emissions can be reduced. In order to achieve the EU-wide greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2030, stricter regulations and adjustments to climate protection laws will follow. The BePacMan project offers the opportunity to establish new concepts in order to support trade and industry in implementing their climate protection strategies by reducing their CO2 emissions, to adopt to new market situation and to take responsibility for the material by each actor involved in the life cycle of paper packaging. The challenge is to develop supply chains that either are reversible or can provide a resources for the next supply chains. This could be done by development and innovations in on demand packaging or returnable packaging systems. Existing procedures need to be adopted to the new approach and these solutions need optimization to be efficient and economically feasible taking into account diversity of the market conditions. The solutions developed within the project will enable the improvement of waste management system for authorities and contribute to transformation of business models in logistic, parcel and ecommerce businesses. Those stakeholders make a significant contribution to the life cycle of packaging and should be responsible and obliged to mitigate the footprint. Many of the companies operate in different countries, with different frameworks, cultures and consumer awareness. The goal is to help them adopt and to point out effective solutions, together with increasing social awareness, providing new ways for waste prezention and management and opportunities for additional savings on packaging for people, small sales companies and local stores. Thus project focuses on the paper packaging lifecycle involving on land transport, and the partnership is also focused on that area
