Description (EN):

Most border regions share similar challenges. These regions due to their geographic positions are economically disadvantaged, bur their key position is a good opportunity for establishing cross-border/ International cooperation. The project areas main challenge addressed by the project is that initiatives and attractions are mainly isolated from each other, their operators are rarely cooperating.and the initiatives are covering smaller areas or less members. Finding a solution to the common needs is a common cause for the two countries and can only be realized in an investment transcending the border as national initiations would not reach the goal. Our project will improved cooperation in different fields - nature protection, pollution, biodiversity, green infrastructure and education sector; also, will deliver pilot actions and solutions in the above mentioned sectors and trained participants. General objective is the joint promotion and development of niche crops on small areas and related ecosystems services, such as lavender, berries, sea buckthorn up to 1 ha in Giurgiu and Ruse County. The project will contribute to the INTERREG VIA Rom-Bulg program's objective of protecting nature and biodiversity. At the end of the project, we will increase the number of niche crops in the region. So far, according to the summaries drawn up on the basis of written notifications submitted by farmers, more than 20000 ha have been affected by soil drought in Giurgiu and Ruse Counties in 2022, especially corn, wheat, sunflower and barley crops. Also one of the problem in Giurgiu and Ruse counties is soil pollution by pesticides is one of the most common forms of pollution today. The widespread use of pesticides in agricultural production can degrade and damage microorganisms living in the soil. Even more so, in cases where these chemicals are misused or in excess, chemical compounds accumulate in the soil. Thus, the use of pesticides decreases the overall biodiversity of the soil.. The type of soil and type of pesticides can also affect the persistence of pesticides. Intensive exploitation of croplands have several significant effects on the soil. Some of the main ways in which soil can be affected by intensive agricultural practices include: 1. Chemical Pollution: The intensive use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers can result in the accumulation of chemicals in the soil. Over time, these chemicals can impact soil microbial communities, beneficial organisms, and overall soil health. 2. Loss of Biodiversity: Intensive monoculture practices can lead to a reduction in biodiversity in the soil ecosystem. A diverse range of microorganisms and organisms in the soil contribute to nutrient cycling, disease suppression, and overall ecosystem resilience. 3. To mitigate these negative effects and promote sustainable soil management, it's important to implement niche crops on small areas, such as lavender, berries, sea buckthorn, , on 1 hectar in Giurgiu and Ruse County Incorporating these herbs into an agricultural system can contribute to biodiversity, attract beneficial insects, and potentially provide some pest management benefits.. it's important to consider their interactions with the main crops, their contribution to soil health, and their overall role in the farm ecosystem The main outputs of the project will be: 1.1. Comprehensive Analytical Report with Visuals on Niche Crops 1.2. Niche Crops Strategy for Giurgiu and Ruse counties 1.3. A peer review of the draft strategy 1.4. Dissemination& Promotion of commune strategy of Giurgiu and Ruse counties 2.1. Establishment of the ECOCROPS pilot-action space. 2.2 Development of the joint pilot project 2.3 Documentation of pilot project joint findings 2.4 Organize joint visits for local farmers and stakeholders to the pilot crop 3.1 Network of stakeholders from Giurgiu and Ruse counties that support development of green infrastructure 3.2.Brand manual for eco-services and eco-products obtain from establishment of niche-crops 3.3. ECOCROPS pilot-project web-platform and media campaign 3.4. Hosting promotional events and workshops Finding a solution to the common needs is a common cause for the two countries and can only be realized in an investment transcending the border as national initiations would not reach the goal. The field of biodiversity has not received increased attention from structures that have allocated funding from European fund. Having in regard this lack of funding, the developed results will have a long term multiplier effect, which will last after the project will be closed, on both sides of the border. The project will tackle new, very limited fields until the current call for proposals: biodiversity and green infrastructure and will provide pilot actions in the above-mentioned areas . Also,will put together pubic administration, NGO s and actors from the local labor markets (local agricultural workers to reduce migration).

Actual Achievements (EN):

In the first reporting period of the ECOCROPS project, significant progress was made in laying the groundwork for promoting sustainable, biodiversity-friendly agriculture across the Giurgiu–Ruse cross-border region. The main achievements include: Project coordination successfully established: The Lead Partner set up the full management structure and hosted the first Steering Group meeting with all partners. Roles, responsibilities, and communication channels were clearly defined from the beginning. Procurement successfully initiated by LP: The Lead Partner launched and finalized three direct award procedures, fully aligned with the project budget. Contracts were signed for: Field surveys, data collection, and reporting (Activity A.1.1) Drafting the strategy for Giurgiu County (Activity A.1.2) Communication and dissemination services (Activity A.1.4) Extensive field research launched: Based on the signed contracts, over 25 agricultural sites in Giurgiu County were surveyed, and 35 local farmers were interviewed. The data collected — on soil quality, biodiversity, and crop potential — is feeding into the Comprehensive Analytical Report on niche crops. In parallel, Slivo Pole Municipality (PP2) launched procurement for similar research activities in the Ruse region. Community engagement initiated: Over 60 participants attended two stakeholder workshops in Giurgiu. Udriste Nasturel High School (PP3) started planning future educational events and identified local groups for community-based activities. Public visibility enhanced: Media coverage in Bulgaria — three regional and one national article — helped raise awareness of the project’s mission. Promotional materials were produced, and project visibility was ensured through both online and offline channels. Key outputs under development: Work began on the flagship deliverable — the Comprehensive Analytical Report with visuals, which will evaluate niche crops from an ecological and economic standpoint and guide future pilot actions. Added-value of cooperation The Romanian–Bulgarian cooperation ensures harmonized approaches and shared expertise in identifying and promoting sustainable crop systems. The Lead Partner’s initiative in launching early procurement gave all partners a clear operational structure to follow. Meanwhile, PP2 and PP3 ensured territorial relevance by contributing data and preparing for future local implementation. By working together, the partners are building a common strategic vision for eco-friendly agriculture — one that values biodiversity, supports local economies, and engages communities on both sides of the border. During the second reporting period, the project has achieved significant progress across all key work packages, with a particular focus on Work Package 1 – Research and Strategy, Work Package 2 – Pilot Action, and Work Package 3 – Communication and Promotion. All partners contributed actively, ensuring strong cross-border coordination, timely implementation of activities, and visible results on both sides of the Danube. The Lead Partner coordinated the implementation of Work Package 1, finalising the field survey and data collection process in cooperation with agricultural experts and local farmers from Giurgiu County (Romania) and Ruse District (Bulgaria). The surveys analysed soil conditions, biodiversity, farming practices, and water availability for potential niche crops such as lavender, berries, fruit trees, sea buckthorn, anise, chamomile, and lemon balm. These results provided the scientific foundation for three major project outputs: - the Application Form with Preliminary Data, - the Comprehensive Analytical Report (structured in seven chapters with charts and crop rankings), and - the List of Ecosystem Services. Building on these findings, the Cross-border Niche Crop Strategy was drafted and validated through six stakeholder meetings (three in Romania and three in Bulgaria). These events gathered farmers, authorities, and research representatives to confirm the strategy’s practical relevance and feasibility. The document integrates sections on situation analysis, strategic objectives, implementation measures, monitoring, risk management, and sustainability. Both the Lead Partner and PP3 contributed to the creation of a preliminary Map of Lands and Stakeholders in the cross-border area, which will serve as a key reference for upcoming pilot activities under WP2. In parallel, the dissemination and promotion component advanced substantially. Partners implemented a coordinated communication campaign, including a detailed Communication Plan, social media outreach (over 200,000 unique visitors), targeted email campaigns (3,000+ stakeholders reached), and the production of 500 brochures and 1,000 leaflets. A dedicated section on the web platform and six local workshops increased awareness and engagement among farmers and communities. From the investment perspective, specialised equipment was procured to strengthen technical capacity. The Lead Partner purchased a Thermo-vision Camera and a Monitoring Drone for crop observation and biodiversity monitoring. At the same time, PP2 initiated acquisitions under WP2 — including a Professional Robot Mower and a Borehole for Water Intake — to support the establishment of the Pilot Niche Crop Ecosystem – ECOCROPS. PP2 also maintained strong project management and visibility efforts: participation in coordination meetings (Slivo Pole and Tsenovo), joint events with Romanian partners, and information sessions organised by the Joint Secretariat in Ruse. Moreover, media visibility was ensured through three regional and one national publication, along with regular updates on the municipality’s official website.
