The problem of quality drinking water supply and wastewater treatment is highly relevant for all regions of Ukraine and Poland. Furthermore, it is one of the most significant social issues. Water quality is directly affected by both the water supply system, as it leads to eutrophication of lakes and rivers, and sewerage, as wastewater effluents are major contributors to groundwater, and they ultimately affect water quality. Surface and ground water provide drinking water in Ukraine and Poland. Surface waters, which have anthropogenic pollution, provide 80% of public water supply. The monitoring data certifies that the quality of surface water is constantly deteriorating due to the direct discharge of domestic or industrial wastewater into water bodies, about 40% of which is not treated or does not meet sanitary requirements. When entering water bodies, insufficiently treated or untreated wastewater contaminates them with suspended particles, organic matter, pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria and viruses. The overall objective of the Project is improving the environmental situation in Western Ukraine and Eastern Poland by addressing the provision and conservation of water resources and promoting sustainable water management. Expected changes: - decrease of lake eutrophication in Western Ukraine and Eastern Poland through the development of a public water supply and sewerage system, which will manage the region's water resources and preserve the water balance of the ecosystem of these areas; - countering the spread of diseases across borders (by reducing the level of contaminated wastewater entering water bodies); - developing social services, labour market and minimizing unemployment (by increasing the tourist attractiveness of recreational facilities in cross-border (CB) areas). As a result of project implementation: - 40,400 people will be connected to 10.476 km of newly built or reconstructed water supply systems; - 11,268 people will be connected to 26.459 km of newly built or reconstructed sewage networks; - 205 people will take part in 10 Ukrainian-Polish cross-border events; - the Concept of Sustainable Development of Water Use and Engineering Sanitary in the Programme area will be developed, the main tasks and principles of which will be taken into account in regional programs and implemented by realizing the activities plan; - joint web portal will be created with the help of which local governments and authorities will monitor groundwater level, as well as water level in rivers and lakes in the Project area and the inhabitants will be informed about the results achieved within this project and concerning the quality of drinking water. The project activities will contribute to the eco-transformation of the water management complex of each partner region (PBs). All the Project Activities in one way or another ensure the reduction of water pollution in the basin of cross-border rivers and reservoirs. The Project will ensure sustainable water management of water basin formed by the Vistula and Pripyat Rivers (the territory of Lublin Voivodeship, Volyn (Svityaz lake) and Rivne Oblasts), the Seret river - a left tributary of the Dniester (Ternopil Oblast) as well as high-quality treatment of sewage emissions into the Latoritsa River (Zakarpattia Oblast), which in turn carries its waters to the countries of the European Union. Thus, participation of Polish partners is extremely important, because, firstly, it allows studying and taking into account their positive experience in ensuring the efficient operation of sewerage networks and, accordingly, we will continue the cooperation that have started several years ago by building a system of water supply and sewerage in the Project area. Secondly, their participation will provide an opportunity to analyse the existing preconditions in the Polish cross-border area for their further consideration in the Concept of Sustainable Development of Water Use and Engineering Sanitary.
