The project responds to a number of problems in the Program area, including negative effects of global climate change, drought and water shortages, failure to treat environmental protection as a priority, threats to human activity and the development of infrastructure for natural resources or joint activities related to environmental protection between entities from Poland and Ukraine. Given the uniqueness of the natural resources located in the Program area, it is important to protect them from both climate-related and non-climate-related natural hazards, and from threats related to human activity. Anthropogenic activities negatively affect flora and fauna. A great issue is proper water retention, which causes its excessive accumulation and flooding. To address these issues, the partners plan to implement several innovative cross-border biodiversity activities. The partners decided to create a green infrastructure around their units - the choice fell on hospital infrastructure with large areas to be developed. In the first stage of the project (WP1), research will be commissioned for universities/research units/experts in the field of: analysis of topography, habitats and biodiversity. Bialystok County and Executive Committee of Uzhhorod City Council will conduct a biodiversity study around the hospitals, in which they will determine the selection of appropriate vegetation for biodiversity from the Podlaskie Region and a list of vegetation characteristic of biodiversity from the Transcarpathian Region, issue recommendations on appropriate biodiversity management around the hospital, analyze topography, habitats and biodiversity on the hospital site, prepare recommendations on methods of soil care and biodiversity vegetation planned for planting on the hospital site. Information and results regarding biodiversity will be exchanged between partners. The second stage (WP2, WP3, WP4, WP5) is to increase ecological awareness among the society and to develop the concept of biodiversity in green public infrastructure of partners. Study visits will be held and training will be conducted (e.g. in the field of planning and maintenance of green areas, adaptation to climate change, environmental goals or DNSH - Do No Significant Harm) enabling the cross-border acquisition of knowledge and new skills - training sessions for the participants from Poland and Ukraine who both will atend in equal numbers. The activities of the project will cover a total of 480 people, including: 40 people trained + 140 people participating in joint cross-border events. WP2 will end with the final report "Biodiversity + infrastructure = green urban infrastructure" (1 jointly developed solution). This report will be another comprehensive solution that will later influence the planning of future investments of partners in environmental, social and economic terms. The last implementation stage will be construction and planting works around the hospitals in Lapy (1st stage) and Uzhhorod. These are to be exemplary investments showing how to design and implement infrastructural investments using biodiversity - green infrastructure. The total area of reclaimed land used for green or other areas will be 1.84 hectares. The implementation of this project will allow the achievement of the general objective of the project, which is the development of cross-border biodiversity in the infrastructure of the Bialystok District and the city of Uzhhorod.
