The main objective is to restore and protect the biodiversity of historic parks in Poland and Ukraine. The steps taken will lead to the protecion of areas of natural and cultural value, to slowing down the degradation of nature and to harmonizing the management of natural areas of great importance separated by the state border, and thus to protecting their biodiversity. Historic parks are a valuable natural element of the landscape. Old trees play a huge natural and ecological role - they are a living environment for many organisms, which is important for preserving biodiversity. Many of these organisms are threatened with extinction and owe their existence only to old trees. The project aims to preserve biodiversity by raising awareness and knowledge about the importance of park woodlots as natural habitats. The project focuses on the valorization of the natural resources of historic parks along with the assessment of their condition (dendrological analysis, archaeological research, analysis of water retention in the park, preparation of site and height maps for design purposes, historical query of the park), what will allow planning of long-term protection. The improvement of the condition of trees will translate into the stabilization of historic parks as habitats for animal species that use trees as nesting, feeding, shelter or communication routes, as well as the occurrence of lichens and fungi associated with trees. The project involves the development of concepts, maintenance and protection of old trees in historic parks in the Strzyzewice commune, (Piotrowice), in the area of the Public Provincial Specialist Hospital in Chelm, in the commune of Zymna Voda and in the area of the Saint Yura’s Archcathedral in Lviv, which will allow to preserve valuable natural areas in these regions and to develop common standards for their protection. As a result of the project, the historic gardens (former monastery Gardens of Saint Yura) as three nature monuments of local value will be implemented. They will serve as the park-monument of gardening and the park-monuments of horticultural art in Lviv, Ukraine. As part of the project, trees will also be marked and the Center for the Protection of Ancient Trees will be established in order to create a facility of the nature reserve fund of Ukraine - a botanical nature monument. The project also concerns the purchase of equipment necessary for the proper conduct of research and maintenance of parks. The project will contribute to increasing the awareness and enriching the knowledge of participants about historic parks (managers, local authorities, inhabitants of the region) through study visits, practical training in the assessment of the health condition of trees and conducting environmental and educational activities, training, quests, conferences, purchase of equipment. These affairs, as well as the planned conference and meetings with residents, will allow to exchange experiences and good practices between the participants. The result of these actions will be the joint development of guidelines that will make it easier for park managers to plan and conduct further activities and develompent of the areas. This type of cross-border events receive more media attention, thanks to which there is a chance for good media coverage of the topic of protection of historic parks, and thus also creates possibility to affect the public opinion and decision-makers more effectively. In addition, implementation of the project will build a positive image of nature in the minds of citizens as a common good and a symbol of uniting nations.
