Description (EN):

The DODILog regions and peri-urban areas with their ports are key production/storage/export hubs for potatoes & grains, the most common staple food in NWE´s diet. However, these highly sensitive products, especially if organic, are easily subject to decay (sprouting/rot due to heat/moisture/mechanical stress/unbalanced gas levels) or disease/pathogen attacks (fungi/pest infestation). DODILog will bring together transnational multi-disciplinary partners (cargo owners/movers/keepers; scientific/technology/infrastructure providers) with diverse expertise and enable storage operators to test techniques, processes, tools that extend the post-harvest shelf-life of raw tubers and grains and reduce crop/financial losses. The expected change is that this economically important fresh agri-food value chain will be strengthened thanks to the increased capacity of storage hubs to innovate, by integrating smart early detection & quality preservation applications into existing monitoring systems with the help of practice-oriented companies along the northern France-Belgium-Netherland-Germany routings (NWE upper part of the Atlantic&North Sea-Mediterranean TENT-T corridors). Advanced non-destructive practices (e.g. Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Sub-THz Sensing, Multigas eNose, EPT, HS) to better control crops in warehouses/silos/containers will be tested in lab and real environments and evaluated. The pilot actions´ technology transfer demonstrative approach will exploit applications used for other sectors (e.g. medical) and agri-food (e.g. fruit), showing potential transferability in different contexts. Training, dissemination, engagement activities and 1 evidence-based Strategy will serve as business guidance for targeted storage/transport players, with recommendations & opportunities to enhance performance/efficiency. Complementary know-how and sophisticated equipment/facilities will ensure scalability/applicability across sectors/geographies/operators for long-lasting change.

Actual Achievements (EN):

DODILog commenced from all perspectives. From an administrative perspective, the project Application was modified by the Lead Partner based on the technical requirements stated in the Approval letter. A jointly revised version of the Partnership Agreement was signed and submitted to the JS. The Lead Partner procured a consortium of two external experts to support the partnership in coordinating the overall project management, reporting and dissemination. It also procured a consultancy responsible for monitoring the pilots, delivering the pilots´ technical economic/environmental Evaluation Report and Strategy for potátaoes/grains storage and logistics optimisation. DODILog representatives attended the Approved Project Seminar set by the Programme on 10+11/03/2025 and a later Reporting webinar to get acquainted with the Jems and the NWE regulations. A Communication Strategy was developed with inputs from the PP, especially in terms of potential showcasing and stakeholder engagement opportunities, based on their sector experience. The provisional list of possible events to attend will be regularly updated with upcoming conferences, fairs, workshops, etc. The poster was created and hung in the PP premises; a pull up and PPT template were realised. A shared storage space was made available where to save and circulate relevant documentation. The website started being populated and the PP produced a web-page in their own websites on DODILog. A hashtag for social media was devised. Concerning the challenge of addressing target audiences, some partners already indicated external organisations (such as BayWa, 110 Bourgogne, Vivent) that are willing to be engaged, e.g. as additional test sites or technology suppliers, or that might be contacted to increase their knowledge base. To this purpose Niedersachsen Ports was approached by the LP, being the owner of the Port of Brake where the AO Müller is located and in whose silos some tests will likely be carried out. Nports´ management agreed to be involved in DODILog and be informed on its progress and posted a DODILog page on their website, too. A project kick off conference and Partnership Meeting #1 (PM1) were organised in Zwolle on 25+26/03/2025. The get together served to remind PP in details of all the expected project Objectives, Deliverables, Outputs, Results, as well as to brief PP on the claim process, including FLC designation and the need to collaborate transnationally. Some of the partners attended the Port of Zwolle´s annual event with the Zwolle, Kampen and Meppel harbours´ several customers. This took place the day before the project launch, on 24/03/2025 at the local MAC3 PARK Stadium; during that occasion the LP´s Director presented DODILog to a very large assembly. Two pull-ups displayed in the venue increased the project visibility. The first semester allowed forming and strengthening cohesion among partners´ members, some of whom had changed from the time of the project idea development. Transnational teams were created for the various pilots based on compteneces, equipment available and links with test sites providers. The groups are intended to be flexible with participants moving across demonstrators, as several skills will have to be employed at different times in alternating settings, from technical expertise to communication capacity. Bi-multi-lateral physical/online meetings already occurred with information exchanges. The activities and pilots´PP leaders were confirmed, i.e. in A1.1 - P1 (NIRS): Arvalis/Polytec, - P2 (HIS/EPT): Arvalis/INAGRO, - P3 (Multi-gas eNOSE+High Sensitivity NIRS): Multitel; in A1.2: - P4 (Temperature, ventilation and humidity control smart system): Javelot, - P5 (Sensor-battery chips with adhesive paper tracking system): Port of Zwolle/Gransloot, - P6 (Smart storage control through Sub-Tera Hertz ): Multitel/Arvalis; in A1.3 - P7 (Business Model for crop storage and transport optimisation): CIRCOE/Vives; in A3.1 - Training: PoZ in A3.2 - EU Challenge for students and Agri Contest: BDI The ground started being prepared for concrete testing of the foreseen 6 advanced technologies in the next phases; some pieces of specialist equipment (e.g. sensors) were ordered or purchased; characteristics of samples required and samples´ delivery standards were defined and shared among PP, in order to collect the potatoes and grains on which to experiment at a later stage. Trial protocols were drafted. A schedule of future actions throughout the whole project duration was jointly formulated to refine the Application´s overview, highlight main steps to be taken and allow the DODILog organisations better plan when to be involved at a deeper level and for which Deliverables. An online call (Pit-stop on pilots and communication) was set for 08/09/2025 and a second Partnership Meeting proposed to be held in Brake in early October.

The technologies and insights developed in QCAP, particularly around gas sensors for storage, will be instrumental in informing DODILog’s approach to improving storage conditions for potatoes and cereals. DODILog can leverage AgriRenaissance’s strategies for fostering innovation and technology transfer within the agri-food sector. This can help in ensuring that the technologies piloted in DODILog are effectively integrated into the storage and logistics practices of the potato and cereal value chain. (EN), BEETLE-NIRS (EN) | A joint French project of Arvalis, INRAE (Institut national de la recherche agronomique), Synacomex (SYndicat NAtional du COMmerce EXtérieur des céréales, graines oléopro, légumes secs et produits dérivés) and SCICA AGRORESO. It considers NIRS as a techniques for large grains to detect insects. The DODILog partner ARVALIS developed methods for detecting and quantifying live adult insects. The initial calibrations made during the project were tested in a representative storage environment on the ARVALIS pilot site. The results showed the need to enrich the calibration construction databases to improve detection and quantification, and to carry out tests in real storage environments to capture the environmental variability that could potentially influence the measurements. The aim of DODILog project is precisely to pilot and improve these technological solutions in real setting to demonstrate the validity, applicability and benefits of the technology to storage operators.
