Description (EN):

The DODILog regions and peri-urban areas with their ports are key production/storage/export hubs for potatoes & grains, the most common staple food in NWE´s diet. However, these highly sensitive products, especially if organic, are easily subject to decay (sprouting/rot due to heat/moisture/mechanical stress/unbalanced gas levels) or disease/pathogen attacks (fungi/pest infestation). DODILog will bring together transnational multi-disciplinary partners (cargo owners/movers/keepers; scientific/technology/infrastructure providers) with diverse expertise and enable storage operators to test techniques, processes, tools that extend the post-harvest shelf-life of raw tubers and grains and reduce crop/financial losses. The expected change is that this economically important fresh agri-food value chain will be strengthened thanks to the increased capacity of storage hubs to innovate, by integrating smart early detection & quality preservation applications into existing monitoring systems with the help of practice-oriented companies along the northern France-Belgium-Netherland-Germany routings (NWE upper part of the Atlantic&North Sea-Mediterranean TENT-T corridors). Advanced non-destructive practices (e.g. Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Sub-THz Sensing, Multigas eNose, EPT, HS) to better control crops in warehouses/silos/containers will be tested in lab and real environments and evaluated. The pilot actions´ technology transfer demonstrative approach will exploit applications used for other sectors (e.g. medical) and agri-food (e.g. fruit), showing potential transferability in different contexts. Training, dissemination, engagement activities and 1 evidence-based Strategy will serve as business guidance for targeted storage/transport players, with recommendations & opportunities to enhance performance/efficiency. Complementary know-how and sophisticated equipment/facilities will ensure scalability/applicability across sectors/geographies/operators for long-lasting change.

Expected Achievements (EN):

Potatoes and grains are subject to physiologic processes that induce to quantitative/qualitative changes and exposed to external hazards. DodiLog WP1's objective is to demonstrate, via technonogy transfer demonstrative pilot actions, how their storage facilities could be improved, by introducing new flexible, non-destructive applications to their management systems. Control processes are expected to perform more accurately, reducing crop/financial losses and allowing for data-driven decisions after: - testing advanced technologies employed in other environments or with other agri-products to DETECT QUALITY EARLY RISKS (alteration/degradation/contamination/toxicity/sprouting/rot) and their related causes (climate, diseases, pathogens/insects/fungi); - testing new smart features to storage (temperature/ventilation/humidity/pressure) technologies -normally used separately or never tested in this context- to MAINTAIN PRODUCTS´ QUALITY. The objective is to develop a strategic guide that provides a mid-to-long-term framework for technological innovation and cross-sector technology transfer to agri-food operators in the post-harvest large storage/transport of potatoes/grains. The report will help them to address the issue of enhancing their management capacity in terms of advanced early risk detection & quality preservation, improving food safety, reducing crop losses and increasing (energy) efficiency. The strategy will be evidence-based, i.e. validated by the results of the pilots collected and analysed jointly by the transnational partners in light of their respective scientific/technology (Arvalis/Inagro/Multitel/Javelot), economic, transport&logistics (CIRCOE/Vives, Graanslot/PoZ/WvW) and regional development (BDI) expertise. Managers of silos/warehouses for the selected crops will be engaged to contribute to achieve a common vision of how intelligent applications may be best integrated into existing processes. WP3's SO is to ensure DODILog Innovation transfer by applying IoT-based real-time monitoring systems and AI-driven decision-making tools to the agri-food industry. These technologies will help to monitor temperature, humidity, and quality in storage facilities with greater accuracy and efficiency. Thanks to the set of physical and web-based seminars and workshops and several other activities agreed in the project Communication Strategy (e.g. presentation at events, pro-active sharing of project reports, etc...), it is expected that the targeted storage centres´ professionals may improve their knowledge/skills and increase their capacity to integrate smart/intelligent applications like the ones devised by DODILog into their daily management planning and operations to improve efficiency in the raw potatoes/cereals storage & transport, reduce waste and increase food safety.

DODILog can leverage AgriRenaissance’s strategies for fostering innovation and technology transfer within the agri-food sector. This can help in ensuring that the technologies piloted in DODILog are effectively integrated into the storage and logistics practices of the potato and cereal value chain. (EN), BEETLE-NIRS (EN) | A joint French project of Arvalis, INRAE (Institut national de la recherche agronomique), Synacomex (SYndicat NAtional du COMmerce EXtérieur des céréales, graines oléopro, légumes secs et produits dérivés) and SCICA AGRORESO. It considers NIRS as a techniques for large grains to detect insects. The DODILog partner ARVALIS developed methods for detecting and quantifying live adult insects. The initial calibrations made during the project were tested in a representative storage environment on the ARVALIS pilot site. The results showed the need to enrich the calibration construction databases to improve detection and quantification, and to carry out tests in real storage environments to capture the environmental variability that could potentially influence the measurements. The aim of DODILog project is precisely to pilot and improve these technological solutions in real setting to demonstrate the validity, applicability and benefits of the technology to storage operators.
