The project aims to strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable development in communities vulnerable to climate change impacts, with a particular focus on riverbank and dam governance. By integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations into the management and maintenance of these vital infrastructures, the project seeks to mitigate risks and enhance adaptive capacities among communities The border regions of Ukraine and Romania face a range of challenges, including environmental degradation, increased flood risks, water management regulations, economic disparities, and limited cross-border cooperation. These interconnected issues necessitate joint action for enhanced sustainability and climate resilience, as the consequences of climate change do not respect national borders and require collaborative solutions The overall objective of the project is to enhance climate resilience and promote sustainable development in these vulnerable regions through improved governance of riverbanks and dams. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the risks associated with climate impacts, such as flooding and erosion, while strengthening local capacities to sustainably manage these crucial resources. By fostering a holistic approach, the project aims to empower communities to take ownership of their environmental futures The main outputs of the project will include comprehensive risk assessments and maps that identify vulnerable areas and prioritize interventions. Developed climate resilience models for the pilot community will offer innovative solutions, including sustainable infrastructure projects focused on strengthening the dam and Uzh riverbank area. Key outputs will include the investigation of natural barriers and the enhancement of the drainage system. Additionally, the project will establish robust informational and institutional platforms tailored to community needs: the Climate Synergy Hub and the Climate Synergy Platform. Local communities, government agencies, and policymakers will benefit from these outputs through improved flood protection, enhanced environmental health, and increased capacity for sustainable resource management. Moreover, training programs tailored to local needs will empower stakeholders with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively address climate resilience The project will utilize a collaborative approach that involves conducting risk assessments, engaging communities in participatory planning, and implementing nature-based solutions for riverbank and dam management. The project proposes the implementation of blue and green infrastructure in the community of Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine, aimed at strengthening the dam and Uzh riverbank area with the development of a green airfield for multifunctional use. This effectively combines the goals of reinforcing the dam and riverbank area while creating a green airfield suitable for alternative energy generation and use by the community, as well as for small aviation. This approach is highly innovative and results from the exchange of experiences between RO and UA communities in previous projects (Smart Energy and Small Aviation) This multifaceted approach ensures that interventions are not only environmentally sound but also socially equitable. A cross-border approach is essential because the environmental challenges faced by these regions, such as shared water resources and climate impacts, transcend political boundaries. Coordinated efforts are crucial for effective solutions that address the complexities of transboundary resource management. By fostering collaboration between Ukraine and Romania, the project will enhance resource efficiency and foster sustainable practices that benefit both countries What makes this project particularly original is its unique integration of nature-based engineering solutions with community-driven participatory planning. This approach ensures that local knowledge and needs are central to decision-making processes, resulting in solutions that are culturally appropriate and widely accepted. Moreover, the emphasis on cross-border collaboration facilitates the sharing of best practices, expertise, and resources, effectively addressing environmental challenges that affect both nations. This holistic approach not only promotes the sustainable management of riverbanks and dams but also enhances the resilience of communities to climate change, fostering a more sustainable future for the region By empowering local communities, leveraging cross-border cooperation, and implementing innovative, nature-based solutions based on smart specialization and economic growth, the project aims to create lasting positive change in the face of climate change and local development of the communities. This initiative serves as a model for integrated and collaborative approaches to climate resilience and sustainable development in vulnerable regions within the cross-border area

Expected Achievements (EN):

Enhance climate resilience and economic sustainability of communities in Romania and Ukraine by implementing green and blue infrastructure improvements in the Kholmok Community. This includes strengthening the Uzh River dam and riverbank, establishing a green airfield, and integrating renewable energy systems. 1. Strengthening the Dam and Riverbank: Who: Kholmok community residents. Territory: Uzh River riverbank. Measurable Change: Improved structural integrity, reduced flood risk, enhanced safety. 2. Establishing a Green Airfield: Who: Local businesses, residents, tourists. Territory: Village of Storozhnytsia. Measurable Change: Airfield construction, new transportation options, economic activities. 3.Integrating Renewable Energy Systems: Who: Local authorities, businesses, residents. Territory: Storozhnytsia. Measurable Change: Solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations, increased renewable energy use. 4.Modelling of 8 climate change concepts - 4 in UA and 4 in RO
