- Cross-Border Environmentally Friendly Transport Development, ENI CBC RO-MD 2014-2020 (EN) | The project is ongoing until December 2023. The project addresses cooperation activities that include the identification of a joint methodology for adopting environmentally friendly transport principles, the joint development of environmentally friendly policies, and their implementation. It also involves the identification of critical issues and key factors that contribute to reducing air pollution by improving the transport system. Several measures are implemented to stimulate the use of bicycles within partner cities to encourage environmentally friendly and healthy mobility.
- The project is being implemented in Ungheni and Dorohoi, with Ungheni City Hall leading the partnership.
- Through its results (creation of environmentally friendly and sustainable transport infrastructure, establishment of a cross-border network for environmentally friendly and sustainable transport development, and increased public awareness of sustainable transport), the project will have an impact on the environment. Simultaneously, disaster risk management strategies play a pivotal role in safeguarding communities against the adverse impacts of natural disasters. Consolidating a defense dam is a proactive step towards ensuring water resilience and managing the heightened risks of flooding, particularly in regions prone to extreme weather events.
- (EN), "Development of Emergency Volunteer Rescue Service/Teams" funded by the United Nations Development Program through the "Climate Risk and Disaster Reduction Phase II" (EN) | Within the project there was created the team of rescuers that was trained by the specialists of the Civil Protection and Emergency Situations Service from Ungheni. The trainings had diverse themes - identifying and evaluating emergencies, necessary measures in case of disasters, providing first aid, assessing the needs of victims, etc. The City Hall had developed and approved a Regulation for the organization and operation of rescue volunteer teams.
- There were also developed risk maps and emphasis was placed on the promotion of volunteering in emergencies in the city of Ungheni based on the experience in Poland.
- The synergy between the volunteer teams and proposed project is a continuation for enhancing community resilience in the face of emergencies. By harnessing the power of community engagement, local knowledge and strategic infrastructure development, the community can build a more resilient foundation that withstands the challenges posed by natural disasters. This collaborative approach not only saves lives but also empowers communities to proactively address the complex and evolving nature of disaster preparedness and response.
- (EN), Disaster Risk Management Capacity Development for Cities in Eastern Partnership Countries (CapaCities), DG ECHO/ UE (EN) | Aim of the project is to structurally improve the capacities of Ungheni city to lead and coordinate a structured process of Disaster Risk Management planning, based on multi-hazard risk assessments and self-insight in current DRM capabilities and in strong connection with EU policies for DRM, as well as the Sendai framework.
- The DRM strategy, encompassing risk assessment, early warning systems, community engagement, and capacity building, forms the foundation for comprehensive disaster preparedness. Simultaneously, the consolidation of defense dam, essential in mitigating water-related disasters, involves reinforcing structural integrity.
- The synergy begins with risk assessment, identifying vulnerabilities that inform defense dam design. Early warning systems in both strategy ensure timely responses, coordinating dam operations for controlled water release. Community engagement, a key DRM element, extends to the maintenance of defense dams, involving locals in safeguarding their communities. This interconnectedness creates a strong framework, where a well-developed DRM strategy complements the consolidation of defense dams, enhancing overall disaster resilience.
- (EN), Consolidation and restoration of the Prut river bank and the construction of rainwater sewerage sections in the city of Ungheni", financed by the National Ecological Fund (EN) | Provided for the restoration and consolidation of the Prut river bank and Prutului lane, by renewing and extending the storm water drainage system, allowed to eliminate the negative impact on the environment, caused by erosion of land and flooding city streets with storm water.
- Reinforced river banks contribute to the reduction of flood risks, a crucial aspect of disaster preparedness. Early warning systems, integral to DRM, benefit from stabilized river banks as they contribute to the prevention of sudden riverbank collapses and erosion, enhancing the effectiveness of alerts and response mechanisms.
- Reinforced river banks act as a natural complement to the defense dams, as they collectively create a comprehensive defense against potential disasters. A well-consolidated river bank system serves as the first line of defense, reducing the likelihood of overflow and minimizing the pressure on defense dams.
- Furthermore, capacity building within communities and among relevant authorities aligns with the collective efforts of river bank and defense dam consolidation. Educating communities on the importance of both components enhances their ability to respond effectively during disasters. Likewise, dam operators and emergency response teams are better equipped to manage crises, creating a synchronized and resilient disaster management framework.
- (EN), “Flood meadow reconnection and restoration, Jijia watercourse remediation'', Large Infrastructure Operational Program (POIM) 2014 – 2020 (EN) | Aiming to ensure the effectiveness of flood prevention interventions in the form of green infrastructure. The non-permanent accumulation of Buhai river has the role of mitigating flood flows with a probability of exceeding the value of the flow that can be transited in safe conditions downstream of construction, through the bed of Buhai River and Jijia River, respectively, in order to defend against floods the city of Dorohoi and the localities downstream (Broscăuți and Slobozia).
- The improved landscape resulting from this project facilitates more efficient emergency response operations. Clear and stabilized watercourses enable easier access for emergency personnel and equipment, expediting search and rescue missions in the aftermath of a disaster.
- Furthermore, the preventative measures taken through watercourse restoration and river bank remediation contributed to a decreased likelihood of emergencies occurring in the first place. By addressing the root causes of disasters, the project create a more resilient environment, reducing the frequency and severity of emergencies and thus lessening the burden on emergency response teams.
