Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

    • EuropeanGreenDeal With the direct support provided to the municipalities and campus to foster the implementation of already validated solutions in their bio-waste management systems, the project will indirectly contribute to the Circular Economy Package in 2018, which is the core of EU laws targeting waste prevention, management and material cycles. More specifically, the assistance provided to these target groups, will enhance the MED situation with respect to the Waste Framework and Landfill Directives targets (obligation of source separated collection from Jan 2024; ban of other treatments that are not biological; reduction of landfilling to less than 10% of the whole Municipal Solid Waste). In addition, the project awareness rising campaigns will contribute to the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, by communicating in a proper way to citizens on the proper identification of compostable packaging and the collection within the bio-waste fraction
    • TerritorialAgenda2030 The CirBioWaste goals encompass the importance given by the Territorial Agenda 2030 to the circular economy principles in waste management and to the necessity to incorporate circularity in waste management to achieve the SDGs. By adapting already validated solutions to the local contexts of the takers, the project will develop suitable strategies on bio-waste management that include social, regulatory and organizational tools and promote collaboration with the most relevant stakeholders and citizenship in line with the Agenda proposal framework.
    • EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion CirBioWaste actions are aligned with the environmental challenges addressed by the EUSAIR, which highlights waste pollution as a crucial issue for the region’s well-being. The project will act with concrete solutions to the bio-waste management (including the separate collection, recycling and use) and considers that improving the current circularity of the bio-waste is of utmost importance for areas of high tourism impact as the ones of the Programme. CirBioWaste actions will be deployed at local level in 3 of the 4 countries of the Programme (Italy, Greece and Slovenia).
    • EUStrategyAlpineRegion The EUSALP strategy emphasize the promotion of sustainable practices to position the Alpine region as a pioneer for the EU. CirBioWaste addresses the challenges that mountain Regions face on the management of waste due to orography and low population density characteristics by providing solutions that have been validated in similar areas to be adapted by partners to the specific context. The project includes actions in Italy and Slovenia, 2 of the 7 countries of the Programme.
    • Other The Farm to fork strategy sets very ambitious targets for reducing nutrient losses by 50% (while ensure no deterioration in soil fertility) and fertilisers use by 20% by 2030. The project will contribute to these targets since the models adopted with the support of the project will be able to produce high quality compost/digestate that are organic soil improvers with recognised N/P/K replacement value (reducing the amount of conventional fertilisers required) and an organic carbon content that will improve the soil structure, avoiding undesirable nutrient leaching and subsequent contamination of water sources
    • Other Organic Farming Regulation: CirBioWaste will support the implementation of validated bio-waste management solutions that will allow to close the cycle by returning organic matter to the soil. In particular, by adopting these solutions high quality recycled products will be generated that, not only are allowed in Organic Farming practices, but are also in some cases the only alternative to provide nutrients to the soil and improve its structure out of the conventional fossil-based products.
    • Other The project will contribute to the Soil Strategy for 2030 goals by promoting among the target groups adapted solutions to foster the use of bio-waste recycled products. The organic fertilisers produced from bio-waste recycling, help to replenish depleted soil carbon pools and to improve the soil structure and the water retention capacity, essential aspects for ensuring that EU soil ecosystems are healthy and resilient and continue to provide their crucial services
    • Other CirBioWaste actions are aligned with the objectives and strategies of Environmental Agenda of the Union for the Mediterranean that calls for a shift to sustainable consumption, management and production patterns; increasing resource efficiency; promoting nature-based solutions; and moving towards a circular approach. In 2nd UfM Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Climate Action, the UfM countries agreed to advance cooperation and alignment on environment across the region, including the key axis of Green Economy – Support the transition towards a Green, Circular and Socially Inclusive Economy. The project will provide concrete solutions for biowaste management in the Mediterranean countries involved in the consortium and will promote the improvement of the current circularity of biowaste, which is of utmost importance for the entire Mediterranean basin to combat crucial issues such as climate change, soil degradation, the impacts of landfills, and more.
