Description (EN):

The aim of the project is to develop innovative tools and methods for the sustainable and flexible reuse of historic and existing buildings in the northern regions of Sweden and Finland, turning what is nowadays perceived as a burden into a possibility. The project will create opportunities for municipalities and homeowners by showing how unused or underused buildings with social and cultural values in peripheral areas in Northern Sweden and Finland can be re-used in a creative and smart way, for instance as BnBs, temporary houses, artist residencies, smart- remote- and co-working spaces, and sites for exhibitions, events, and other cultural activities. This will enhance and promote the attractiveness of peripheral areas as places to live and work. The project will jointly support good preservation of the buildings, will promote sustainable tourism in the Northern region and will contribute to the socio-cultural life of Northern peripheries and rural and sparsely populated areas. As a result, the project will launch business models for different actors and target groups who want to create attractive and accessible ways to utilize their unused or underused buildings. The project will also result in an IT platform that will serve as an active marketplace that streamlines connections between project results, end-users, and target groups. This operational tool will facilitate not only knowledge sharing but also the re-activation and restoration of unused buildings, exploring cutting-edge technologies. The project will ensure that the results remain a valuable resource for a sustainable future of the northern regions by securing their ownership, durability, and transferability and by establishing a solid foundation for the continued growth and success of the region.
