Grenspark Groot Saeftinghe is een uitgestrekt gebied over de grens heen waar grote Zeeuws-Vlaamse en Wase polders samenkomen met een estuariene natuurkern, inclusief het Verdronken Land Van Saeftinghe en de haven van Antwerpen. Het gebied is uniek vanwege de combinatie van landbouw, natuur en haven. De duurzame ontwikkeling van deze regio is daarom ruimtelijk en bestuurlijk één van de meest complexe processen in Vlaanderen en Nederland. Dat was de aanleiding voor de opstart van het project Grenspark Groot-Saeftinghe dat liep van 2016 t/m 2020. De focus lag toen op natuur-, maar ook op identiteitsgerichte gebiedsontwikkeling. Het nieuwe (gelijknamige) project wil de regio aantrekkelijker maken voor toeristen. Om duurzame vrijetijdsbesteding in het grenspark te ontwikkelen, zet het in op enkele strategische investeringen en activiteiten, gekoppeld aan educatie en leefbaarheid (people), authentieke en verantwoorde natuur- en landschapsbeleving (planet) en lokaal ondernemerschap (profit). Zo wordt ingezet op de uitbouw van het 'grensparkhart' d.m.v. drie centrale onthaalpoorten en wordt er tot in de ‘buitenschil’ een verbindend netwerk georganiseerd dankzij infrastructurele inrichtingen. Ingrepen zoals de installatie van picknicktafels, zit- en ligbanken, educatieve en belevingselementen, uitkijktorens, schuilhutten, vogelkijkwanden, bewegwijzering en infoborden versterken de beleving en werken verbindend. Zo worden bezoekers ook beter gespreid, onder meer om de druk op de omgevende natuur te verlichten en verschillende ondernemers in het gebied te ontdekken. De (be)leefbaarheid van het gebied wordt gewaarborgd dankzij het monitoren van bezoekersstromen en het onderzoeken wat het effect is van die stromen op de omgeving. Daarnaast wordt rekening gehouden met de wensen van de bewoners (de ‘streekholders’) zodat de juiste wegen gekozen worden voor de versterking van het toeristisch-recreatief aanbod en de landschapsbeleving. Zo blijft de rust in de nabijgelegen polderdorpen gegarandeerd. Het project streeft – in navolging van het eerdere project - naar een stevige lokale verankering zodat het grenspark ook in de toekomst door de omgeving en ondernemers uitgedragen wordt.

Grenspark Groot Saeftinghe is a vast area located across the border where the large Zeeland-Flemish and Wase polders meet an estuarine nature core, which includes the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe and the port of Antwerp. This area is unique due to its combination of agriculture, nature, and port activities. As a result, sustainable development in this region presents one of the most complex challenges in Flanders and the Netherlands regarding land use and administration. This complexity led to the initiation of the Grenspark Groot-Saeftinghe project, which ran from 2016 to 2020. At that time, the focus was on both nature-oriented and identity-driven area development. The new eponymous project aims to make the region more attractive to tourists. To develop sustainable leisure activities in the border park, it emphasizes several strategic investments and activities. These are linked to education and quality of life for people, as well as authentic and responsible experiences in nature and the landscape related to the planet, and promoting local entrepreneurship for profit. The plan includes expanding the "border park heart" through three central reception gates, along with a connecting network that reaches the "outer shell" via infrastructural developments. Enhancements such as picnic tables, benches, educational and experiential elements, lookout towers, shelters, birdwatching walls, signage, and information boards improve the visitor experience and encourage connectivity within the area. This approach aims to disperse visitors more effectively, alleviating pressure on the surrounding nature and allowing them to discover various local businesses. The livability of the region will be maintained by monitoring visitor flows and assessing their impact on the environment. Additionally, the wishes of the residents, referred to as the "regional stakeholders," will be considered to ensure that the right strategies are implemented to strengthen the tourist-recreational offerings while enhancing the landscape experience. This ensures that the tranquility of nearby polder villages is preserved. Building on the previous project, the goal is to foster strong local connections so that the community and local entrepreneurs continue to promote the border park in the future.
